One More For The Road-And A Thank You To All

I couldn't let the day go by without one final contribution to "The Huddle." Two years after starting this blog as "Bobby vs. The World", today marks the end of a significant chapter in my life, and I exit WPIX with sadness but a grateful heart.

Lolita Lopez alerted us yesterday... and many of you came out. The Red Bulls held a job fair Tuesday to help staff their new home, Red Bull Arena. The weather wasn't very nice but there were a lot of hearty souls out there trying to find employment. We were out there to check out the happenings...

Musings On Rex, The Mets & Bernie

We've hit February, boys and girls. It's quiet for a little while before spring training begins in about 2 weeks. But of course I have to put my two cents in on:

Rex Ryan: NOT the best move for The Wonder Coach, giving Dolphins fans the finger at an MMA event in Miami. Ryan is now Rex the Idiot. He may be Everyman, Mr. Average guy to Jets fans, but he has to show some class when representing the organization. After all, Ryan is a VERY large public figure. Lost in the event Sunday: Herschel Walker won his Strikeforce debut.

A Real Pain: The Mets are being blasted again, this time by former set up guy J.J. Putz. Seerms the Mets told Putz not to tell the press about his elbow injury, which ended his season in May. The Mets claim they KNEW Putz was hurting but were told he could pitch through the pain. This reeks of Ryan Church, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran. Is it any wonder so many players turned the Mets down this offseason. I wouldn't want to catch a cold anywhere near Citi Field this season.

Playing For A Cause: Good guy former Yankee Bernie Williams, headling an evening of guitar jams at Feinstein's at Loews Regency in Manhattan. Proceeds for the event goes to Ed Randall's Bat For The Cure Charity. The WFAN "Talking Baseball" host has raised a lot of money to fight and increase awareness of the threat of prostate cancer. Check out Bernie on the video board, then go to erbatforthecure.org.

Rex Ryan may be a great football coach, but he could use a lesson in dignity from the former centerfielder in the Bronx.

Hopes for 2010

2010.bmp

We've said Goodbye to 2009 and Hello to 2010... The PIX11 Sports Team wishes everyone a Happy and Healthy 2010... We also have some hopes and wishes for the local sports teams... Let's see if you agree:

Mets: Jason Bay is nice... good to know that Omar Minaya is awake. But the Mets still need some pitching... There's not much out there with John Lackey, Roy Halladay, and Jason Marquis signing with new teams... But there's been talk of acquiring Carlos Zambrano... I'm ok with that. Also... Can we ask the baseball Gods for some health this year??

Yankees: Hmmm... they just won the World Series... They went out and got a new center fielder in Curtis Granderson. They helped their pitching staff by bringing back Javier Vazquez. Maybe he'll be better this time around since he won't be expected to be the ace of the staff. So what would the Yankees ask for? I don't know. What do you get for the team that has everything? I guess you just ask for the Yankees on the field to match their worth on paper. I know... lame request!

Sean Kimerling Testicular Foundation Golf Event

In 2003, we at WPIX were shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our friend and colleague, sportscaster Sean Kimerling. He was only 37 when he passed away because of a very aggressive form of testicular cancer. He is gone but never forgotten. Monday I went to his annual golf outing on Long Island. Check out my report.

Golf & Life Lessons

9:20PM | July 31, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 4

Golf is a fantastic sport that mixes athletic ability with technical form in such a way that unless you have a little of both, you won't be successful. That's why you can play golf at any age. As you get older, your athletic ability may wane but if you keep a consistent swing and read lines well etc., you can remain competitive. I love that! What I don't love is how anxious I get when I play. I want to just GET IT and get it right then and there. First off, I need to go to the course more than once in a blue moon and secondly, I need to remember that you don't just GET golf. What a way to learn this and other life lessons than in my nine holes with my husband and two new friends, Frank and Henry earlier this week. (in picture below)

Running in Undies: Would you?

10:08PM | July 24, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 2

Nearly 500 runners wearing just their skivies gathered in Central Park to break the Guiness World Record for "largest gathering of people in underwear". They did it...HURRAH!

s-UNDIERUN-large.jpg

I think that takes guts too. I am a former runner and did a lot of it wearing "almost underwear" but now as a 33 year old mom, I will keep the running shorts on, thank you very much. How about you? I love the fact people were having fun with the event! We caught up with some of the participants to get their take on the event....check out the video player on the right side of the page!

Footnote: I am only speaking of people who have chosen to be out in their underwear. In light of the Erin Andrews "Peeping Tom" issue, I don't want to seem insensitive. She was violated and I hope it doesn't happen to anyone ever again. Kudos to ESPN for having her back in a big way and reprimanding those who have sensationalize the incident.

*Also, thanks to New York City Triathlon for the picture.

Marc Anthony & JLo: What about the Mets?

7:00PM | July 21, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 7

Marc Anthony has become a minority owner in the Miami Dolphins, along with Gloria & Emilio Estefan. By association, Marc adds his wife, Jennifer Lopez, "owns everything he owns" so she too can be considered part owner. These two are lifelong New Yorkers, Marc a huge Mets fan, and "Jenny from the Block", a Yankee follower. So why are we holding up the aquamarine and orange?

marc%20and%20jlo.jpg

Am I super upset? Not really--too many other things to worry about than how Marc and Jennifer spend their millions--BUT couldn't you have helped a local? We know the Mets could use any punch they can get right now, even in the form of a spicy duo putting money into a team Marc loves and follows intensely. (Maybe that trade--no it's not a trade!--could have happened. I'm speculating but you never know, right? ) Now all the excitement is down in sunny Florida and here in rain soaked NY, we are left with no salsa and spice. Marc and Jennifer are apparently looking for residence in Miami, hence the purchase and office for Marc at Dolphin Stadium. I fear: are we losing them all? If Marc goes, does it mean the start of fans retreating? Someone find me Jerry Seinfeld...quick!

NY Red Bulls Cook off

8:50PM | May 12, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 3

I had the best time judgng the Red Bulls second annual "Iron Chef" cook-off at the ESPN Zone. The players are great! Their energy, their enthusiasm, and their efforts in making my belly happy were very much appreciated, and it was a pleasure getting to know the guys.

red%20bulls%20winner.bmp

I love their down to earth nature and feel they have what so many professional athletes lose when they make it "big". I suggest everyone take in a game at Giants Stadium. The team is playing well and have some must see players including Mac Kandji. First though, check out our story on the cook-off and how Andy Boyens tried to get some extra brownie points from me.

THESE Are The February “Blahs??”

9:31PM | February 25, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 4

The post-Super Bowl/pre-March Madness period we’re currently mired in is traditionally known as the “February Blahs.”

Meaning mid-season NBA, NCAA, and NHL games are best summed up – not with a word or phrase – rather a primitive grunt (and for me, full-extension tongue stick-out).

While true for the most part, TODAY is the exception. Just take a look at the lineup we have in sports tonight:

(***Picture Explanation: This is how all primates should cope with the February Blahs.)

Devin Harris hits game winning shot vs. the 76ers

This is why I love sports... Last night at the Izod Center, Devin Harris of the Nets hit an incredible 47 foot shot from just behind the halfcourt line at the buzzer to beat the 76ers 98-96. That heave capped a 39 point night for Harris. The Nets snapped a 5 game losing streak. An unbelieveable way to end the game. For a moment, I was able to forget about all that's wrong with sports.
