Send the Snow North: 2010 Vancouver Olympics
I already don't like the snow. I am originally from Puerto Rico and grew up in Houston, TX. My idea of winter is 70 degrees and a light sweater...this despite four years near Boston and the last nine years in New York. I do love to play in the snow. I am like a 5 year old when it comes to that but as a 33 year old mother of a 5 year old, I hate the shoveling, starting the car to warm it up before school, and wiping the paws off the pups before they come inside. I say all of this so that you know I am a little bias when I say: SNOW GO AWAY! Honestly though, I am speaking for those at the Vancouver Olympics. The games begin in just 4 days but athletes are struggling because of one of the warmest winters around. Vancouver needs the snow not DC, Jersey or NY!
The current snowfall totals to 20 to 30 inches across Virginia to Southern New Jersey. Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to remain about 3 degrees Celcius or just over 37 F at Cypress Mountain, just north of Vancouver, which will host the freestyle and snowboard events. Officials have been trucking in loads of snow since the beginning of the month, from as far as two hours away just to keep the mountain fresh. Only athletes and their coaches are allowed on the slopes and practices have been limited. The first medal event is the women's moguls on Saturday and there is still a 60 percent chance of rain which does not make for good conditions. So hey Mother Nature, do me a favor and send some snow North of us! Let's make this an Olympics where the competition won't be determined (so much) on the weather conditions but on pure heart, talent and who wants it more.
Track And Field Gender Bender
Weird story out of the track and field world today.
It seems the runaway winner in the women’s 800 meters at the World Championships, South Africa’s Caster Semenya, MAY NOT BE A WOMAN.

Semenya didn’t just win the race, she (and for the purpose of continuity, I’ll be calling her “she” throughout this post) absolutely dominated….beating her nearest competitor (and defending world champ) by a whopping 2.5 seconds.
It turns out the track and field federation has been on to Semenya for some time now and requested a gender test be performed about three weeks ago. According to the governing body, those tests take a while turn up results.
I’ve included a video of the race so you can see for yourself, but when I first checked out Semenya, I have to admit….I thought dude all the way.
Snowboarders "Shred" in NYC
We think that makes sense. Spend an afternoon around a bunch of pro snowboarders and you start to pick up the lingo.
16 of the best snowboarders in the world came to New York Thursday for the Red Bull Snowscrapers Big Air competition. Top prize was $50,000 and the total purse was worth $100,000.
Organizers spent the past three weeks transforming Manhattan’s East River Park into a snowboarding facility, complete with a custom 90-foot ramp and landing area.
The Huddle team made it out to Snowscrapers Thursday during the afternoon practice session to talk to some of the premier boarders in the sport.
We think you’ll find these guys refreshing compared to the typical tight-lipped athletes of the day. They’re honest, thoughtful and funny. Check out what they had to say.
The Michael Phelps Angle NOBODY Is Talking About
Michael Phelps spoke out to our sister-newspaper The Baltimore Sun today, telling the paper he “clearly made a mistake” smoking pot and that “this was stupid and I know this won’t happen again.”

Phelps’ damage control is in response to critics from all arenas – the media, athletic circles, schools, etc. – weighing in on his decision to do drugs in light of his position as a role model.
Other Phelps/Bong-related topics thoroughly being covered include:
-How he allowed himself to be photographed
-His previous DUI
-The status of his many endorsement deals
But what amazes me is THE ONE TOPIC I HAVE YET TO HEAR DICUSSED, and to honest, it was the first thing I thought about when this story broke….
Time to extinguish the Olympic flamefor good!

I’m jumping on the bandwagon-its time for President Bush to announce a U.S. Boycott of the upcoming Beijing games. Protests in Europe and now San Francisco have disrupted the traditional relay of the Olympic torch.
IOC President Jacques Rogge is upset that such a great event has been marred. The torch is supposed to be about “unity and harmony.”
What a load of crap! The Olympics, and the IOC are about money. Why else would they allow one of the most oppressive nations on the planet to host this event? You can rest assured, NBC WON’T air essays on China’s human rights record, the happenings in Tibet, or the thousands of people displaced so that the Games can run smoothly.
