Are Kimbo Slice's 15 Minutes Of Fame Over?

The above photo shows us where Kevin Ferguson, aka Kimbo Slice, spent most of UFC 113-on his back with nowhere to go. UFC 113 may have marked the end of the MMA trail for Slice. Saturday night, the Internet street fighting sensation, catered to by the now defunct Elite XC and then Dana White and the UFC was easily defeated by Matt Mitrione. It looks like Dana White has seen the error of his ways by bringing in a guy just for the publicity.
MMA In The Big Apple? Absolutely!

The fastest growing sport in the United States invades the Prudential Center Saturday night. UFC 111 will host its latest pay per view in Newark. Don't think it hasn't escaped NY politicians, most notably Governor David Paterson, that the majority of pre fight events were held in Manhattan before captivated throngs. UFC President Dana White is no idiot. He knows the local area is a hotbed of MMA fighters and fans. Paterson, meanwhile, just needs something positive-and adding cash to the state's treasury would help.

Jose Canseco Makes A Fool Of Himself...Again

So I really didn't know whether to put this in the MMA or baseball section of the blog. Is there a "I'm a complete moron" section? I'll have to check with our IT guys.
Jose Canseco made another faux pas that rivals beating his wives, drunken driving, going anywhere near Madonna, endorsing steroids or appearing on "The Surreal Life." I have a hard time feeling sorry for him, but THIS TIME the person he most came close to damaging was himself.

MMA and UFC fans will be tuned in Saturday night for UFC 98. The main event in Las Vegas is Rashad Evans defending his UFC Light Heavy Weight title against Lyoto Machida. It's a battle of two undefeated fighters that most nights would be a good headliner. But the fight that's attracting the most attention, particularly on Long Island, is the throwdown between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra.
Cage Fighting...PIX style
Tonight we brought you the story of Adame and Lori Dunnavant: Married Extreme Cage FIghters. More than counseling or "sexy time" if you will, the Dunnavants think duking it out (only sparring-they don't fight each other competitively) keeps their marriage healthy and strong. It got me thinking: what would happen if you put our little happy family (Jim, Kaity, Mr. G and myself) in a cage? I mean, Kaity and Jim already act like a married couple and Mr. G and I are the kids trying not to get in trouble. I got imput from my fellow peers but would like to know from your vantage point, who goes home with the championship belt?!?

Kaity:
First of all, let me just say I know who would LOSE. Me.
In fact, I'm telling you guys right now, I'm not even getting into that cage! You can't MAKE me!!! I cried during dodgeball in school, okay? I am a big wuss and I'm not ashamed to say it.
Lolita would win. Come on! No contest! Agile, cunning, ruthless. That's my Lolo! GO LOLITA!
Lolita:
Well thank you Kaity but I actually think you have the upper hand. I mean, who can really touch Kaity?!? Mr. G would pay us off not to hit him; Jim is too nice too throw any punches (plus he wouldn't want us to mess up his hair) and then there's me. I forfeit and Kaity wins.
Mr. G:
TOUGH CALL ...NOT ME...... I'LL PAY PEOPLE NOT TO HIT ME.....NOT JIM...TOO GENTLE AND TOO FRAGILE.......KAITY AND LOLITA IN A MARATHON FIGHT.....I'LL TAKE KAITY AND GIVE THE POINTS...
Jim:
First, what are we wearing for this match? I suggest something in spandex for Kaity and Lolita, but definitely not for Mr. G. I'd wear a Speedo, but you have to promise not to point at my tattoos. They're prison tattoos, actually. I'm not going to tell you what I was in for. What matters is that the D.A. never proved anything.
What was the question? Oh, right, who would win... I'd have to say it would be Mr. G. After using up all my energy trying to pin the Spandex Twins, I'd be easy pickins' for the G-Man. But only if he'd be willing to wrestle a man who's wearing a Speedo. Which I'm guessing he would be. Maybe.
(Footnote: Anyone else notice Mr.G wrote in all CAPS...passive aggressive...maybe I will switch my answer...NAH, I think even if Kaity fights, her stature would certainly give her the advantage. She'd go for the knees and we would all be done!)
Ok, Brock's Champ, Now What?
There I was Saturday night hoping with just about everyone else in the free world that Randy 'The Natural' Couture would turn back the clock-again-and beat big, bad, but inexperienced Brock Lesnar at UFC 91, Sadly, it didn't happen. Couture's age and cage rust couldn't deal with Lesnar's size and power.Yes, I'm not happy that Lesnar is the new UFC Heavyweight Champion. No one deserves a title shot after three fights. But Lesnar's win does open up a whole can of worms as to who can 'stop the Brock.'

Great fight, or great waste of time?
If you're an MMA and particularly UFC fan, you'll probably be tuning in to tomorrow's UFC 91 pay per view to see Brock Lesnar fight Randy 'The Natural" Couture for the UFC Heavyweight title. But the matchup has more the makings of a WWE event than a legitimate MMA fight.

First off, I have to correct an error in Friday’s blog. I said Matt Serra was trying to regain the UFC Welterweight title from George St. Pierre Saturday night. I was wrong. Serra, despite not defending the belt due to injury in the last year, was technically still the title holder-while in the meantime St. Pierre won the ‘Interim’ title against Matt Hughes.
The only title that matters now-St. Pierre IS the champ once again-by TKO Round 2 in front of a raucous hometown Montreal crowd at UFC 83. The Canadian dominated the East Meadow native from start to finish.

I’ve written here more than once that Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is bigger than boxing. CBS plans to air Elite XC beginning in May and NBC is considering a show.
The main brand for Mixed Martial Arts is Ultimate Fighting Championship (the UFC), which gained fame once taken over by Dana White and streamlined to showcase MMA stars. Its breakout hit The Ultimate Fighter is the biggest reason MMA is now mainstream. Simply put: Network execs run to where they see money. There may be some blood in the cage, but the overriding hue is green, as in cash.
Which leads us to the case of Long Island born and bred Matt Serra, aka Matt “The Terror’ Serra. Great post 9-11 nickname Matt. He’s the former UFC Welterweight champ who gets another shot Saturday on Pay Per View.
Serra, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stylist, runs two schools on the Island. His pro record stood at 7-4 before winning The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback (the show featured guys whose careers were on the verge of ending-a “last chance” to continue the dream type of scenario.)
