Boxing Loses A Legend

Long time boxing fans, especially those in New York and and his native Puerto Rico, will fondly remember Hall of Famer Jose Torres, a 1956 Olympic Silver medalist and former light heavyweight champion. Sadly, 'Chegui' passed away today at age 72. Torres is seen here during his career and with one time heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney.
Torres was known as a tenacious fighter. He stopped Willie Pastrano at the Garden to win the 175 pound title in 1965. Torres lost the light heavy title the following year in a close decision to Dick Tiger. Other notable wins came against Bobo Olson and Benny 'Kid' Paret. He retired in 1969.
But Jose was equally, if not more loved, for his work outside the ring. He became a leader in the Puerto Rucan community. He served as the head of the New York State Athletic Commission and President of the World Boxing Organization. Torres spent many years as a boxing historian and journalist, writing books on Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson in addition to working for ESPN Desportes' boxing telecasts.
Torres 'hometown of Ponce has declared three official days of mourning for Jose. His dignified prescence will be missed, particularly as the sport he loved so much continues its decline of interest in this country.
