With the trade deadline just a couple of days away... a rumor has been making its way across the internet... Yahoo Sports is saying that Tracy McGrady is close to becoming a Knick. The Knicks would reportedly send Jared Jeffries, Jordan Hill and either Al Harrington or Larry Hughes to the Rockets in exchange for McGrady, Joey Dorsey and Brian Cook. Draft picks are also reportedly involved... I say... WHY NOT?? McGrady has an expiring contract and we know the Knicks are intent on clearing out more cap space so they can really go for broke in the free agent market this summer. And in the meantime... its a pretty good move. We know that McGrady can't stay healthy, so you're not expecting much from him. If he plays... and plays well... its a bonus.

He might bring a little buzz back to the Garden as the Knicks make their "always talked about" playoff run. It could happen... Right now, they are 6 games behind Chicago for the 8th and final playoff spot. He can light a fire under this team and they can make that run. A lot of people might say.. Who cares what they do this year? The focus is on this summer. I say not so fast. If the Knicks make the playoffs, the team is that much more attractive to a free agent. Let's face it... If you're a free agent don't you want to come to a team that you will have to completely re-build. Yes I know that Robinson, Lee, Harrington and others have expiring contracts as well and who knows where they will end up. But it just looks and feels better to come to a team that is not at rock bottom... Like the team across the river for example. Before the season started I argued that the Nets were a better landing spot for a big free agent because of good young talent in Brook Lopez and Devin Harris. That may or may not still be true, but as a free agent, do you want to go to a team that will be 7 and 75?? Probably not. The Knicks, if they hold on to David Lee... Maybe sign 2 max free agents... Even somehow hold onto McGrady... would be a pretty good team next season. Let's see what happens.
