Send the Snow North: 2010 Vancouver Olympics

I already don't like the snow. I am originally from Puerto Rico and grew up in Houston, TX. My idea of winter is 70 degrees and a light sweater...this despite four years near Boston and the last nine years in New York. I do love to play in the snow. I am like a 5 year old when it comes to that but as a 33 year old mother of a 5 year old, I hate the shoveling, starting the car to warm it up before school, and wiping the paws off the pups before they come inside. I say all of this so that you know I am a little bias when I say: SNOW GO AWAY! Honestly though, I am speaking for those at the Vancouver Olympics. The games begin in just 4 days but athletes are struggling because of one of the warmest winters around. Vancouver needs the snow not DC, Jersey or NY!snowfall.jpg

The current snowfall totals to 20 to 30 inches across Virginia to Southern New Jersey. Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to remain about 3 degrees Celcius or just over 37 F at Cypress Mountain, just north of Vancouver, which will host the freestyle and snowboard events. Officials have been trucking in loads of snow since the beginning of the month, from as far as two hours away just to keep the mountain fresh. Only athletes and their coaches are allowed on the slopes and practices have been limited. The first medal event is the women's moguls on Saturday and there is still a 60 percent chance of rain which does not make for good conditions. So hey Mother Nature, do me a favor and send some snow North of us! Let's make this an Olympics where the competition won't be determined (so much) on the weather conditions but on pure heart, talent and who wants it more.

Lolita... its funny you mention the Olympics... It seems as if these games will played under the witness protection program... They are just days away and I have not heard a peep about them. No snow at the outdoor events is a problem.

NBC, I'm sure, is banking on women's skating to really carry them ratings wise. But they haven't really promoted the Games much. In years past it was saturation. Its really amazing how things have changed there. Being a former NBCer... its almost sad to see... It's like seeing an old ex-girlfriend and she really let herself go...

Maybe classless Bryant Gumbel can again share his stupidity to a national audience like he did on HBO's "Real Sports" February 16, 2006 before the last Winter Olympics. Here is this man's profound remarks about the Winter Olympics:

"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t like them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."

Was he fired? No. Reprimanded? Did not here if he was.

Ignorance.

Interesting that Phil Mushnick, in todays 2/12/10 New York Post, addressed my point above. In his piece, he noted:

In 2006, HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" closed with a mocking condemnation of the Winter Olympics and its competitors, saying they don't deserve to be taken seriously as world-class sports because they don't include enough black participants, making the Winter Games, Gumbel concluded, "look like a GOP convention."

This week's edition of HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" devoted all four segments to the Winter Olympics.

ENOUGH SAID!!!
