Nets Worst Ever? Yes and No. (Plus, When They'll Win)
YES, the Nets set the all-time NBA mark for the worst record to start a season, losing to the Mavs tonight to fall to 0-18.
But, NO, the teams they surpassed in achieving the mark, the ‘88-‘89 Heat and the 1999 Clippers, were much crappier than this season’s Nets.
I even think this Nets team is a GOOD TEAM.
Let’s talk starting five:
’88-’89 Heat
Kevin Edwards, Rory Sparrow, Grant Long, Billy Thompson and Rony Seikaly.
’99 Clippers
Maurice Taylor, Lamond Murray, Eric Piatkowski, Tyrone Nesby, and Michael Olowokandi.
Oy.
The only name among the 10 listed above that even strikes me as any kind of a player was Seikaly (and probably only because he was in the original NBA Jam on SEGA).
Give me the Nets’ current roster over those scrubs any day.
Jersey has one bona fide all star in Devin Harris and a budding one in Brook Lopez. In contrast, Michael Olowokandi set back the Clips a decade as a #1 draft bust.
On tonight’s Nets broadcast the announcers theorized that this isn’t even close to the worst team in Nets history.
I don’t fancy myself any kind of Nets expert (I leave that to Jacobs), but I’m pretty sure that some Nets squads of the immediate post-ABA years wouldn’t stay on the court with this current line up.
I guess what I’m trying to say is 0-18 seemed to come about by snowball effect and isn’t indicative of this team now or where it’s headed.
They are young and talented and desperately in need of a break.
It could come soon by way of a soft upcoming schedule. Next up are five straight losing teams: Charlotte, the Knicks, Chicago, Golden State and Indiana.
How’s this for a prediction….they’ll get off the schnied during that stretch.
Want an even more precise pick of when they’ll win?
It’s gonna be this Friday against the Bobcats.
Score? Fine….94-87 Nets.
Take it to the bank (or, at least take the Nets and the points….if you’re in Vegas).
