Nice Off The Field Work: Now, AGAIN, Get Busy

Hey GREAT news, Mets fans. The team will go with a new pinstripe jersey that is a combination of retro and current workings. It will lhave a similar look to the one Nolan Ryan and the rest of the 1969 World Championship club wore while having the players names on the back. The team is also doing what it should have done LAST YEAR: Adding more team colors at Cit Field, a Hall of Fame, and entrances named after Met icons like Casey Stengel & Gil Hodges.
That is good news. Better (a year overdue) late than never. Considering the high prices fans pay to get into Taxpayer Bailout-er, Citi Field, creating a dinstinctive "Mets" home is a big step in the right direction. Go to Yankee Stadium or Citizens Bank Park, and you immediately know the Yanks or Phillies play there. Citi Field in 2009 might as well have been the interior of the Staten Island Mall.
For all the fan-friendly stuff being done (and I can say openly I want a spot on the committee that selects Met favorites for the team's Hall of Fame) there's only one way for the team to get back in the good graces of it's fan base. WIN!!
Therein lies the rub. Last offseason GM Omar Minaya said, "We listened to our fan base and changed our bullpen", when they signed Frankie Rodriguez and J.J. Putz. But for all intent and purposes, they did little else. No attempt at Orlando Hudson or pre steroid Manny Ramirez , as examples.
Will the club NOW say, "Our fans wanted Citi Field upgraded and we listened."? The proof is in the pudding. The team has more holes to fill than a construction worker on the Long Island Expressway. The fan base wants Roy Halladay or John Lackey in the rotation; they'd love to see Jason Bay or Matt Holliday in the lineup. All the amenities and PR moves are great, but they're are better when you win. Remember the ghost town Citi Field was in August and September? It could happen again. The Mets are about as relevant in this town as a cell phone with no reception. For the sake of their fans and their anemic PR war with the Yankees, the Mets MUST get active-NOW!!
