NY Mets' David Wright out...Billy Wagner back!
The talk most of the night has been about David Wright going on the disabled list and his first press conference since the beaning on Saturday. He was very open about the moments when Matt Cain's 94 mph fastball came right at his head. That is one of the scariest things about baseball! However, as I was digesting his words, I caught a shot of Billy Wagner walking and throwing pitches on the field at Citi Field. I knew he was on the comeback but I'm so psyched to see him! Wagner is a bruiser no doubt about it! He is all athlete and I love that about him! Since our first one-on-one interview at his home in Virginia to the present, I have respected the fact he always says it like it is. He vowed to return from Tommy John surgery on his left (throwing) elbow and should be activated from the DL on Friday. How good is he? Who knows, but at this point, who cares? The 38 year old has a guaranteed contract: $10.5M in 2009 and an $8M option with $1M buyout for 2010. The Mets will more than likely buy him out but I wish him only the best. If he can pull a Pedro somewhere else then kudos to him!

As for Wright he says he is "embarrassed" to be on the DL. I understand wanting to come out and play but Wright should be CAUTIOUS more than embarrassed. Don't let your enthusiasm blind you from protecting your future with this team and in baseball. My good family friend and psuedo-uncle, former Astro Dickie Thon never got back to his playing ways after being hit in the eye by former Met Mike Torrez. He missed the rest of the 1984 season and tried to come back but was never the same, losing some of his eye sight. He was just 26 years old. I was young but remember his wife crying and his daughter, one of my closest friends still, afraid. We all cried that day and some years later when reality set it. Dickie is extremely successful but he never reached his full potential. Wright is getting a second chance--rest, don't get anxious and count your lucky stars it wasn't worse. Hear David below:

Did you get an up close introduction to Billy Wagner's alpacas when you visited his home in Virginia?
I understand Billy's wife was an accomplished college athlete.
If Billy shows he can pitch effectively, the Mets may attempt to trade him to save some salary for 2009 and the $1M buyout for 2010. This all must happen in short order, before August 31st.
It was comforting to see David Wright at Citi Field yesterday. The Mets are being prudent by placing David on the Disabled List. Evaluate David in two weeks. There is no rush to get him back on the field.
Dickie Thon was an outstanding baseball player. It was a shame what happened to him to curtail his fine baseball career.
