Jose Reyes: Surgery?

This shouldn't even come as a surprise to anyone but Jose Reyes may need surgery to repair the hamstring tendon behind his right knee that has kept him off the field since May. What I'm wondering is what took so long to come to this realization. At first, Reyes was day to day... Even came back into the lineup only to re-injure himself. Now... all we have seen of Reyes has been him trying to run before games and smiling and joking with fans while in the dugout during games. By the way... Anyone who criticizes him about that is a moron. I've heard people asking why is he smiling and joking when he's injured. What do you want him to do? Be in a perpetual state of depression? That's not his personality. His injury has nothing to do with him interacting with the fans. If he could have been playing, he would have been playing. But I digress. He has been receiving therapy for who knows how long. How long does it take to figure out that this course of treatment is not working? The season is shot. No one who is injured is coming back this year, especially with the team's current situation. So let's just go in... Cut cut, snip snip... Let's fix what's wrong with this guy and have him ready for next year. But the question begs... Will Reyes, ever be the same?? Remember, he had leg issues early in his career. So much so, that the Mets tried to change his running style. I wonder if any of the injured Mets... Carlos Beltran, John Maine, Oliver Perez, Jon Niese, etc, etc... Will any of them ever be the same? You can ponder this while the Yankees shoot for their 27th championship.

I agree with your statement about Jose "smiling and joking with fans." That is Jose's personality. Unfortunately, for years, the baseball protocol (purists?) police from the players, to the media to the fans want Jose to alter his display of emotion and love for the game. Enough Already Phillies (Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino etc.) Enough Already Mike Francesa etc. Enough Already fans who flock to Citi Field and boo for no qaulified reason.
As for Jose Reyes hamstring tendon, I would think the medical professionals could have determined sometime earlier this summer that the best course of treatment for Jose would be surgery. This situation with Jose has been curious, to say the least. Decide. Surgery or no surgery. Allow Jose to heal and maybe he can play some Winter Ball this winter in the Dominican Republic.
I do not see any reason why Jose Reyes would not be the same dynamic player he has always been.
