I Hope David's All Wright

This is truly a scene you hate to see. The most frightening thing in baseball happened at Citi Field. A player got drilled in the head with a pitch. Not just any player. The Mets franchise player David Wright was hit by a Matt Cain 94 mile per hour fastball in the 4th inning of Saturday's Mets-Giants game. Wright had no time to get out of the way as the fastball rose and hit him squarely on the ear flap of his helmet. Wright immediately went to the dirt. He lay there for several minutes as the Mets trainers attended to him. Cain, clearly shook up, crouched and watched the activity at the plate. After a few minutes, the Mets all-star third baseman was helped to his feet and he walked to the dugout under his own power. The Citi Field crowd applauded in relief.
That was a good sign seeing him walk off without help. I watched it live and I thought that Wright dodged a bullet because the ball did not actually make contact with Wright, it hit him squarely on the helmet. Anywhere else and we might be talking about something different. I'm no doctor but I think it could have been so much worse. As it was, he went to the Hospital for Special Surgeries in Manhattan where he had a CT scan which was negative. Wright did suffer a concussion and had to spend the night in the hospital. But I THINK in the next few days we'll hear the good news that Wright will miss a few days as he gets some well needed rest, but there's no more damage. Hopefully the Mets learned from the Ryan Church situation and will not rush Wright back. After all, the season is over. No need to rush him back. They can't mess this up, can they? But this is the latest blow to hit a team that probably is punch drunk from all the blows they've taken this year.
By the way, Johan Santana threw at two Giants batters in retaliation, hitting one of them. I can't fault Santana for that. He has to protect his players but I doubt Cain was throwing at Wright's head. The pitch just got away. Just another lowlight in a Mets season full of lowlights.
