John Wooden

This week Sporting News released a list of its 50 greatest coaches in sports history, picked by a panel of 118 Hall of Famers, championship coaches, broadcasters and other experts.

John Wooden, UCLA men's basketball legend, took the number 1 spot with a total of 57 first place votes. Wooden, named the Sporting News' 1970 Sportsman of the Year winner, had an incredible career as head coach of Bruins. Wooden won a record 10 national titles during his last 12 seasons, including 7 in a row from 1967 to 1973.

A Whole New Meaning To “Wind” On A Golf Course

11:47PM | August 2, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 3

So earlier this afternoon in the sports office we’re watching Tiger dominate at the Buick Open when all of a sudden our desks rattle with that unmistakable sound:

Someone broke some serious wind.

Now granted, the emission of gas is nothing new here in the PIX sports office – in fact it’s a badge of honor and downright customary to let one rip every now and then – so at first I didn’t think much of it.

tiger.jpg

But my eagle-eared colleague Chris (who happened to have been monitoring the golf tournament and had his TV tuned to Tiger) quickly made it known that he was not the culprit.

And seeing how I was the only other one in the room at the time (and I was pretty sure it wasn’t me), there was only one other possible source for that most thunderous of explosions…the BUICK OPEN!!

But who could possibly be so audacious as to cut one on live television in front of millions of viewers? Take a look for yourself (the magic happens about 8 seconds into the clip):

NY Giants statements on Antonio Pierce

Giants Statements regarding Grand Jury's Vote of "No Bill" On Antonio Pierce (from Giants Public Relations Department)

antonio%20pierce.jpg

President John Mara: "We certainly agree with the grand jury's decision.
We said last week we felt strongly that Antonio's actions did not warrant criminal charges, and obviously the grand jury, having heard all of the testimony, felt the same way."

Chairman Steve Tisch: "This was an extremely serious matter that Antonio and our organization responded to in an appropriate way. Needless to say, we are happy with the decision announced today by the Manhattan district attorney's office.."

General Manager Jerry Reese: "Antonio is a leader on this team, but he is still human, and this has been an emotionally draining experience for him. We know he was happy to get to training camp yesterday, and with this behind him, he can focus all his energy and efforts on football. He took this matter very seriously."

Head Coach Tom Coughlin: "As I said yesterday, we are anxious to start the new season, nobody more than Antonio. Today's decision allows him and this team to move forward and focus on our preparation for the season."

Plaxico Burress Indicted: Is it Fair?

9:41PM | August 3, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 1

To be honest I am not shocked. I figured the Manhattan D.A. had plenty of evidence to prove that Plaxico Burress violated the gun possession law. Burress was indicted on 2 felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon and 1 count of reckless endangerment. Each gun possession count carries a minimum of 3 1/2 years behind bars. Ouch! At 31 years old and seemingly at the prime of his career, Plaxico could now face jail time and might never play ball in the NFL again. (The league has not ruled or acted on the personal conduct policy) Is this fair? I think so. Look if anyone else had done the same thing, and the grand jury had to decide based on the same evidence (including not calling police right away and initially hiding the gun used in the incident last November) I think the outcome would be the same.

Folks... this one's gonna be short as I have some well deserved days off ahead of me. But for Luis Castillo and the Mets... If not for bad luck... They'd have no luck at all!! The player most famous for his excruciating drop that handed the Yankees a win on a silver platter, had another mishap. After grounding out in the 7th inning Tuesday against the Cardinals, Castillo fell down the dugout stairs and sprained his left ankle... He had to be helped off. X-Rays were negative but at the moment, there's no idea if or how long he'll be out. Unbelievable!! What else can go wrong? Dare I even ask? Jose Reyes shut down for the season? Sure... that's a possibility too. He will be examined in New York by doctors because he's still feeling discomfort in his right leg. Oh, by the way... K-Rod blew a save... Albert Pujols hit 2 homeruns including a grand slam in a 5 run 10th... The Cardinals beat the Mets 12-7 and the not-so-Amazins are sinking into oblivion. This season is over, I've finally given up. I'm getting texts from Yankees fans (right after the Pujols HR) asking "How bout those Mets." It's a good time for a vacation. Hopefully when I come back, the Yankees will be 0-12 against the Red Sox.

What is going on with the Mets and their lower halves? Huh?
To steal a term from the NFL...the Mets and their "lower body injuries" are killing them, their season and the fans!
Beltran, knee. Reyes hamstring. Sheffield, hamstring. Delgado, hip. Now Jonathon Niese, hamstring. Castillo, ankle. (tripped going down the dugout steps.) What is going on here? Whatever happened to a normal baseball injury, sore arm, tight shoulder? John Maine seems to be the only one of the injured players with a normal "upper body injury."
If I'm a Mets player, I have to be afraid to wake up in the morning and put my feet on the floor. Might pull a toe-nail, or strain a knee cap. This is not funny anymore.
The latest thing with the Mets is, they say they are not going to shave until they're above the .500 mark. As of Wednesday night, they're 4 games under that water mark, but shaving shouldn't be the concern. The concern should be focused on walking, skipping, running, rolling without pulling a hammy, turning an ankle, or tweaking a knee.
Get these guys walkers, those cute one's with the half tennis balls on the bottom so they slide better!

Big Game Burnett

11:36PM | August 7, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 0

I was holding off on this blog post until AFTER tonight’s Yankees/Sox game, but seeing how this one is still going, and going, and going (and how I have to GO HOME eventually), the time has come to opine on the brilliance of AJ Burnett.

What a game from AJ. He stepped up huge tonight, matching Boston ace Josh Beckett inning for inning. AJ tossed seven and two thirds scoreless ball, while striking out six.

aj%20burnett55555.JPG

But most importantly, and seemingly for the first time this year, a Yankee starter didn’t just “keep my team in the game.” Instead Burnett dominated, giving the Yanks every chance to blow the game open.

All I’ve been hearing from fans this season is how the Yankees’ top guns - CC, AJ and (to a lesser extent) Joba – haven’t been dominant this season, rather being complacent with just keeping the game within reach.

That’s been true. CC and AJ have been good this year, but not the shut down studs Yankee fans were expecting when they were added to the mix during this off season. But tonight, you can finally put Burnett in that dominant column.

CC Heeds “Huddle” Advice…Throws A Gem

11:21PM | August 8, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 0

Seems CC has his fancy personal locker room laptop computer tuned to WPIX.com and read our blog last night calling for the big fella to follow up AJ Burnett’s beauty and twirl one of his own.

(And yes, by the way, each of the Yankees has a personal laptop affixed like a plasma screen TV in their lockers…and often times they have – let’s say – “creative” desktop wallpapers…).

cc22.JPG

Like we said last night, this series marked the perfect time for the Yankees new hired guns to finally showcase their “ace” potential, and both AJ Burnett and CC have come through big this weekend.

That’s the kind of return you expect on your $250 million off season investment!

Did you ever think the Yankees would so easily be able to turn “0-8” into a distant memory while simultaneously turning the table on the Red Sox?

How Sweep It Is!

11:46PM | August 9, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 0

Wow. What a statement!

The Yanks’ four game sweep of the Sox officially announces to all of baseball that the Yankees are unquestionably the best team in the game.

Not only that - unlike last year - this team has the ability to rise above adversity and distractions and play up to their talent level.

AAAA22.JPG

The big off season additions stepped up this weekend and appear to have put the Yankees over the top when it comes to matching up with the Red Sox.

I’ve been blogging throughout the entire series and each night’s post went something like this….AJ did it tonight, now can CC follow his lead? And then…..CC dominated the Sox, but can we really expect Pettitte to do the same?

After tonight, it’s clear that the answer is “yes.” Whatever has gotten into the top half of the rotation has trickled all the way down to the Bombers’ lesser starters and the bullpen.

For a stretch spanning games one through four, the Yankee pitching staff kept the Red Sox scoreless for 31 consecutive innings! That’s the longest such streak for the Yanks against the Sox since 1952.

That’s UNBELIEVEABLE!!!

Blah! I Have A Yankees Hangover

10:10PM | August 10, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 0

I’ve made my Yankee fandom no secret here on the blog, but I must admit that watching tonight’s Yankees/Blue Jays game just isn’t doing it for me.

After “The Boston Massacre,” I’m definitely suffering a Yankee hangover.

And this game hasn’t even been that bad! Granted Sergio Mitre stunk, but there were a bunch of home runs – including back to back jacks by the Yankees and a MOON SHOT by Lyle Overbay – and other assorted nice plays.

hairston%20catch22.JPG

Still, this game doesn’t have 1/5th the cache of the previous four.

Even the fact that the Yankees have a seven game win streak on the line isn’t getting my juices flowing. If they do lose this game (it’s currently the 9th inning), I won’t be that heartbroken. Whatever…it’s just a game in the middle of August.

Now obviously I wouldn’t (and didn’t) say the same thing during the Sox series. Like all Yankee fans I was living and dying with that series. Thankfully, I did plenty of livin’!!

But this game? Win, lose….big deal. It’s just hard to get up for this series.

Anyone else feel the same way?

So far, it seems like the Yankee players themselves might agree with me, too.

Plaxico Burress: You're next....

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: we applaud you! Thank you for making sure your players are held responsible for their actions, no matter the number of benjamins they may have in their wallets. Goodell handed out his latest sentence today to the Browns' Donte Stallworth. Stallworth will now sit out the entire 2009 season without pay for driving his car drunk, and killing pedestrian, 59 year old Mario Reyes last March. The courts gave him a slap on the wrist, a 30 day sentence in jail (he was only behind bars for 24 days!!!). Stallworth also paid an undisclosed but surely a handsome settlement to the Reyes family. So Plaxico Burress...if you are reading, listening, watching...you're next! Your acts at the nightclub in November and your past record of insubordination will all be on the table when it's time to decide your football fate. It won't be pretty.

"In the new Match-Up Plan basketball fans will get to see NBA stars visit the NETS at the IZOD CENTER such as Kobe Bryant and the 2009 NBA Champion Lakers, NBA MVP LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal and the Cavaliers, Dwyane Wade and the Heat, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter and the Eastern Conference Champion Magic, and the Celtics’ trio of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.

For every two tickets purchased under the Match-Up Plan, fans will receive a dual-player reversible jersey – one side featuring a star opponent, the other featuring a Nets star, such as Devin Harris or Brook Lopez. The Match-Up Plan starts at $350 per ticket. The Match-Up jerseys will only be available with the purchase of the Match-Up Plan."

Good For Vick…Bad For Giants??

11:31PM | August 13, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 5

Michael Vick didn’t just re-enter the NFL, he jumped right into the toughest division in football and smack into the middle of one of the nastiest rivalries in the NFL: Giants – Eagles.

Back on July 20th, the day Vick was released, I said on the blog that ANY team would be wise to add Vick to it’s roster.

michael%20vick.jpg

Around that very day, the owners of the Giants (and Jets) came out and said that under no circumstances would they sign Vick.

Now the Giants will have to plan around containing Michael Vick - in addition to Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, DeSean Jackson and rookie Jeremy Macklin – AT LEAST two times a season.

That is a DYNAMIC offense with Vick inserted as a hybrid QB/WR/RB in a “Wildcat” style offense. While it still remains to be seen what Vick can bring to the table and to what extent his skills have diminished, on paper, that appears very hard to stop.

They said they were listening and that they would take action. They stayed true to their word, installing photographic images of famous Mets and big moments in team history. There are also two new HD video boards in Right Field and the Promenade level so fans can easily follow live action. Here are several of the pictures and the description of where to find them at Citi Field:

WRIGHT%20BEANBALL.jpg

This is truly a scene you hate to see. The most frightening thing in baseball happened at Citi Field. A player got drilled in the head with a pitch. Not just any player. The Mets franchise player David Wright was hit by a Matt Cain 94 mile per hour fastball in the 4th inning of Saturday's Mets-Giants game. Wright had no time to get out of the way as the fastball rose and hit him squarely on the ear flap of his helmet. Wright immediately went to the dirt. He lay there for several minutes as the Mets trainers attended to him. Cain, clearly shook up, crouched and watched the activity at the plate. After a few minutes, the Mets all-star third baseman was helped to his feet and he walked to the dugout under his own power. The Citi Field crowd applauded in relief.

Wright will stay home and recover from his post concussion symptoms. He goes on the 15 day DL... after that we'll see... Here's Omar Minaya.

NY Mets' David Wright out...Billy Wagner back!

7:12PM | August 17, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 1

The talk most of the night has been about David Wright going on the disabled list and his first press conference since the beaning on Saturday. He was very open about the moments when Matt Cain's 94 mph fastball came right at his head. That is one of the scariest things about baseball! However, as I was digesting his words, I caught a shot of Billy Wagner walking and throwing pitches on the field at Citi Field. I knew he was on the comeback but I'm so psyched to see him! Wagner is a bruiser no doubt about it! He is all athlete and I love that about him! Since our first one-on-one interview at his home in Virginia to the present, I have respected the fact he always says it like it is. He vowed to return from Tommy John surgery on his left (throwing) elbow and should be activated from the DL on Friday. How good is he? Who knows, but at this point, who cares? The 38 year old has a guaranteed contract: $10.5M in 2009 and an $8M option with $1M buyout for 2010. The Mets will more than likely buy him out but I wish him only the best. If he can pull a Pedro somewhere else then kudos to him!

Track And Field Gender Bender

Semenya didn’t just win the race, she (and for the purpose of continuity, I’ll be calling her “she” throughout this post) absolutely dominated….beating her nearest competitor (and defending world champ) by a whopping 2.5 seconds.

It turns out the track and field federation has been on to Semenya for some time now and requested a gender test be performed about three weeks ago. According to the governing body, those tests take a while turn up results.

I’ve included a video of the race so you can see for yourself, but when I first checked out Semenya, I have to admit….I thought dude all the way.

Good ol' Gary Sheffield

6:58PM | August 21, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 3

I had been waiting all season for the REAL Gary Sheffield to stand up and he finally did. Gary said today that he needed to sit out yesterday's game because he was "thrown off" after discovering he had been put on waivers, claimed by another team and then pulled back by the Mets. The latter means Sheff cannot be traded for the rest of the season. So he takes himself out of the lineup and leaves the stadium following last night's game without talking to reporters. Come on' that's Gary Sheffield at his best...trying to play the media and fans! He was at it today when he explained that he has to live with what "they" (the Mets) decide and will play hard for his team. He added that he had a right to feel the way he felt and never asked for a contract extension. Really?!? Picture a calm, collected Gary asking Jerry Manuel in a business like fashion about his future status with the team. I am not saying Sheffield is rude and crude; in fact, he has been a total gentleman and kind when I have asked for an interview or talked to him this season. All I am saying is, he was probably more like, if you aren't going to keep me then let me play somewhere else or show me the money!

Except that it happened.

Wow, what a game for the Yanks. Like I said, the Sox scored 11, got 12 hits and still lost by nine.

It’s the fifth win in a row for the Yanks against the Red Sox after dropping the first eight of the season (how long ago does that feel?).

But more importantly, this is the win that seals the AL East for the Yankees. There’s no way the Sox are coming back from this physical and psychological beating.

The division was wrapped up tonight. No question about it.

So far I’ve watched both of Staten Island’s games and I’m noticing that ANY TIME a kid makes solid contact, the ball is flying over the fence.

There are no one-hoppers. There are no wall bangers. It’s either a 20-hopper to the fence OR a long ball that clears the wall by 15 feet.

According to the folks at Williamsport, their fences are a consistent 225 feet from pole to pole. I say move it back. Push ‘em to 250.

I am currently reading "The Yankee Years" by Joe Torre and Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci. It's an inside look at Joe Torre's run as the Yankees manager during the World Series years up until the end of his reign in New York. It's a pretty good book. It's very cool to read about all the stuff that goes on inside the clubhouse, when we as reporters are not there.

That being said, what I'm getting from the book, is how great Joe Torre was as a manger. How he got certain players to respond, how honest he was with each of his guys, how he handled the Boss, George Steinbrenner, and A-Rod, and guys like the always sour Kevin Brown, and the always edgy Gary Sheffield. It's all very interesting and then yesterday I went to the '69 Miracle Mets 40 year anniversary celebration at Citi Field.

Before the game, I sat in a large press room, looking at a large table, listening to some of the largest personalities on that '69 championship team. Buddy Harrelson, Jerry Grote, Ron Swoboda, Cleon Jones, Nolan Ryan, Jerry Koosman, and of course Tom Seaver.

Take a listen to some of the highlights from the press conference:

Mets Take Fans On Amazin’ Rollercoaster Ride

11:36PM | August 23, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 0

Unbelievable game today between the Mets and Phillies. Even if you’re a Met fan you had to enjoy that one.

I gotta be honest, before the Pagan HRs, the 9th inning errors and the triple play to end all triple plays, I was planning a blog calling Ollie Perez’s disastrous outing the worst moment of the Mets season.

triple%20play222.JPG

I was going to argue that in this monumentally disappointing season, Oliver Perez getting pulled mid-at bat versus Pedro Martinez (3-0 count, by the way) was the ultimate embarrassment.

And then the Mets did something they rarely have done all season….they showed some fight. Some life. They looked like a team doing more than just playing out the string.

Sitting here in the PIX sports office, I felt the tide turn on Angel Pagan’s inside-the-park home run. Even watching through the TV I got the sense that, despite the 6-run punch to the groin the Phillies dealt to the Mets (and their fans), that the game turned on that one play.

And what a play it was. Seriously, what was Shane Victorino thinking? Just because the ball rolls under the wall doesn’t mean it’s a dead ball.

You have to make some effort to grab it. Maybe if he tried to yank it and it didn’t budge the umpire would have ruled a dead ball. But to just stand there and look at it…not a smart move.

The smart move, though, was Pagan not stopping when Victorino threw his hands up. Paying attention, kiddies? Play to the whistle (I know that's football, but still, you get the idea).

But that was just the start of a wild afternoon.

Check out Lolita’s blog below and you’ll notice that pretty much the only Met NOT to go on the DL this year (other than maybe Cory Sullivan) has been Johan Santana.

And outside of David Wright, Santana is the player the Mets can LEAST afford to have injured.

Today, that’s exactly the news they got.

Johan has pain in his throwing elbow…will miss his scheduled start tomorrow night…and might need season-ending surgery.

Forget this season. If I’m running the Mets, this one is a no-brainer: SHUT SANTANA DOWN FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON.

Mets' David Wright Batting Again

8:54PM | August 25, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 1

David Wright took some swings and spoke to reporters at Keyspan Park. It was the first time he has stepped into the batters box since that scary incident August 14 when Matt Cain's fastball hit him in the head. The Mets put David on the DL immediately and good for everyone. A COMPLETE recovery is the most important thing right now especially since the Mets are not looking to do anything this season other than finish it. David is candid about Billy Wagner leaving for Boston and Johan Santana out for the season. Listen up!

The Mets season has taken another turn for the worse but I must admit I'm not surprised. Johan Santana is done for the year. He needs surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow. I guess the silver lining for Mets fans is that the injury is not more serious. My question is... Who's next? I don't know if there has been anyone on the Mets roster who hasn't been hurt at some time this season. I'd really have to research that. I guess Jerry Manuel, but he doesn't play. Anyway, here's Johan's press conference: Listen in!

Jets Make Right Move; Give Sanchez Job

6:41PM | August 26, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 1

As predicted in this space August 15th, the Jets today announced rookie Mark Sanchez will open the season as the team’s starting quarterback.

Good for the Jets….they made the right decision.

Head Coach Rex Ryan said the choice was his and his alone, though he did consult many people in the know before coming to his conclusion.

That being said, Sanchez being named as the starter was probably decided back in April when the Jets traded up to grab the USC QB 5th overall.

After the contract they gave him and the 2008 success of rookies Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan, Sanchez and his Madison Avenue appeal were a virtual lock to be under center week one.

Remember, both then and now, the Jets have those pesky PSL’s to sell in a new stadium next season.

It would have been a much tougher sell if Sanchez didn’t have a season under his belt to get used to the speed and grind of the NFL.

Take a listen to what Sanchez and coach Rex Ryan had to say at a press conference today:

Jose Reyes: Surgery?

This shouldn't even come as a surprise to anyone but Jose Reyes may need surgery to repair the hamstring tendon behind his right knee that has kept him off the field since May. What I'm wondering is what took so long to come to this realization. At first, Reyes was day to day... Even came back into the lineup only to re-injure himself. Now... all we have seen of Reyes has been him trying to run before games and smiling and joking with fans while in the dugout during games. By the way... Anyone who criticizes him about that is a moron. I've heard people asking why is he smiling and joking when he's injured. What do you want him to do? Be in a perpetual state of depression? That's not his personality. His injury has nothing to do with him interacting with the fans. If he could have been playing, he would have been playing. But I digress. He has been receiving therapy for who knows how long. How long does it take to figure out that this course of treatment is not working? The season is shot. No one who is injured is coming back this year, especially with the team's current situation. So let's just go in... Cut cut, snip snip... Let's fix what's wrong with this guy and have him ready for next year. But the question begs... Will Reyes, ever be the same?? Remember, he had leg issues early in his career. So much so, that the Mets tried to change his running style. I wonder if any of the injured Mets... Carlos Beltran, John Maine, Oliver Perez, Jon Niese, etc, etc... Will any of them ever be the same? You can ponder this while the Yankees shoot for their 27th championship.

The Only Thing Worse Than The Cheap HRs At Yankee Stadium

10:37PM | August 30, 2009 | posted by Matt Estreich | comments: 1

….Is that awful horn that blares when those cheap home runs are hit.

Has anyone else picked up on this?

tex%20hr22.JPG

I’ve been watching Yankee games all year – both on TV and in person – and JUST NOTICED the awful sounding hockey-goal horn blowing when Yankee players hit home runs.

Can anyone help me out here??...has this been going on all year?

Regardless, the real issue here is: what’s the point?

These are the Yankees for goodness sakes! They don’t need cheesy gimmicks like this! I say get rid of it!!

US Open: A pleasant diversion

8:16PM | August 31, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 2

With the Mets completely depleted and the Yankees well on their way to another post season (not trying to jinx or anything), I completely welcome the US Open in Queens. For one, I love tennis and find it a challenging and extremely athletic sport. The fact that a serve can travel 100 MPH plus and someone can actually return it is awesome to me!! This year we have local boy, James Blake, trying to get back in shape, literally! He has been nursing a toe injury this summer and lost in the first round at Wimbledon and the French Open. He also lost in the first round at a tournament in Cincinnati earlier this month to No. 43 Igor Kunitsyn. He won tonight in straight sets.
