So I know a few Mets fans who are annoyed that Pedro Martinez signed with the Phillies today. Martinez told Cheesesteak City reporters that he wasn't healthy, that he "was too brave" and that he shouldn't have pitched at times the last few seasons-particularly last year.

Pedro also intimated that the Mets didn't want him back. Does this surprise you? Martinez himself admitted he was "horrible." So trying to jab at the Mets-and there are many things you can drill them for-makes no sense. Martinez is done. If he is NOW healthy, if he NOW at 37 pitches with any kind of consistency, then his supposed "bravery" last year was foolhardy and costly to the Mets.

My take? The Mets knew when they signed Martinez in 2005 that he might not give them 4 good seasons-and that's what happened. They got 1 decent season. Now, he's Philly's problem.

The Mets were looking for at least three quality seasons from Pedro Martinez. As you accurately note, they got one.
They were hoping that he would open the DR for the Mets to sign a number of prospects who grew up idolizing him, but may have only got one prospect in Fernando Martinez.
They were hoping Pedro would legitimize the Mets in 2005. Did this occur? I have heard differing opinions on this. I would vote NO for Pedro on this theory. Did he help attract Carlos Beltran? No, money attracted Carlos. In fact, Scott Boras offered him to the Yankees at a discount. That is how much Carlos Beltran wanted to play with Pedro. Did he help attract Carlos Delgado? Delgado signed with Florida before 2005 because he felt the Marlins had a better chance at being successful. He agreed to being traded to the Mets only after Florida traded many players before 2006.
Who could forget the unprofessional act when he returned to Boston in June 2006 and embarrassed himself in a performance at Fenway Park. He so loved the Boston fans that he delivered them an easy victory on one June night in 2006.
Good riddance to Pedro. Let him be the same tired act in Philadelphia that he was over the last three seasons in Flushing.
