NY Mets: What Now?
Okay Mets and Mets fans, put the past behind you and move on. Focus on what's ahead because to stay in the hunt (NL East or Wild Card) you need to perform and bottom line...WIN!
We can't worry about what's happening to Johan Santana. He says he is healthy but could this be "the toe" of Pedro Martinez from some years back? I must admit I am skeptical right now. Johan admits he has been having some ailments (listen below) but insists he is fine. To be honest, he might just be tired of carrying this team on his back. Let him have his one bad game and move on. There's the theme.
Coming off Jerry here: let's see if the Mets are fighters. Despite some really bad moments, for the most part, I like what I have seen from the Mets. Look at where they are: 4 games back of the Phillies and 1 1/2 games back from the Giants in the Wild Card as I write this tonight. This is without key players: Delgado, Reyes, Putz, Maine, Perez. Honestly, the Mets could have imploded! Somehow, they seem to stay alive and without any production at the plate from the first basemen tandem or with a rookie, Fernando Martinez and the veteran, Gary Sheffield (who may or may not have an MRI on his right knee?) splitting time in left field. I am hopeful the Mets will play UP to their opponents level and continue to have solid pitching. They just need to increase their situational hitting. Please don't leave any more men on base!!!!
The Mets have 3 in Baltimore beginning tomorrow, then 3 in Tampa Bay, 4 against the Cardinals and the second stop of the Subway Series, all at Citi Field. In terms of pitching it's Mike Pelfrey, Tim Redding and Livan Hernandez as your probables in Baltimore. All three have had decent if not good performances and definitely kept the team in games. I just need to see more hitting. Hit in the right spots, move runners forward, score some runs!! That's not too much to ask. If Martinez, Tatis, Murphy begin hitting close to how Wright and even Beltran are, the Mets would certainly be the "fundamentally sound" team Manuel preached about way back in Spring Training in February.
Final note: the trade deadline is 45 days away so you have to think the Mets are searching for a powerful bat who just happens to play first base... LaRoche, N. Johnson to name a couple...in the meantime, you may get Jose Reyes and John Maine back. There are things to look forward to but we must all just MOVE ON...

The Mets need to play a more consistent brand of baseball. The additions of players like Alex Cora, Francisco Rodriguez and Gary Sheffield have added a degree of toughness and grittiness to the team. This is allowing the Mets to continue to compete for the Division title and/or Wild Card. Jerry Manuel's incessant excuses for inconsistent play by the team need to stop. The great communicator reminds us that the Mets have many injuries. Stop talking like a loser and fight for this team, Jerry. The Mets should stay in the race until they get healthier because of the mediocrity of the National League. Why is Jerry better thatn Willie?
