Mets In Key Stretch Of The Season

I hope the Mets get in tonight's game with the Phillies. Johan Santana is scheduled to start. The next 4 weeks or so could very well determine if the Amazin's will be a serious contender or if they'll be an also ran.

Between tonight and July 9th, the Mets play 28 games-24 against teams that are above .500 or made the postseason last year. There's 6 with the Phils and Yankees, and series with the Rays, Orioles, Brewers, Cardinals and Dodgers. Only a three game set with the Orioles-who play MUCH better at home in Baltimore-and a rain out makeup game in Pittsburgh give the Mets a supposed break.

Here's the rub: THe Mets are three games behind Philly as I type this moments before Santana throws the first pitch. They're hurting and lacking offensive power. For whatever reason, GM Omar Minaya has stood pat as Reyes, Delgado, Perez and Putz have gone down. Maybe Omar thinks he can clone Santana and pitch him every day. Wait, that would mean that Jean Claude Van Damme's movie Time Cop was real. Maybe Omar thinks he can get by with the team he crafted. In a month's time, if the Mets aren't in striking distance, we could see a fire sale-and Minaya and manager Jerry Manuel could be out of jobs. Minaya better understand that this stretch could determine if he gets to lie in the bed he made this time next season.

Can we get some predictions going on how they'll fare during those 28?

I say they finish 12-16....that's .428 ball.

Is that enough to put the nail in the coffin? Probably not, but it sure doesn't help. It'll be fun to come back at the All Star break to see if I was right.

Anyone else want to get in on the fun (of burying the Mets)?

Let's get some more predictions!!!

SHE'S BACK...I know... don't scream. Matt is so negative or maybe I am naive. I think the Mets will raise their level of play against these competitive teams. I am not crazy either so I will say 17-11

Did anyone else get upset that Jerry Manuel did not argue the call at home with Tatis? Hello even David was telling him that Tatis was safe. Ugh! Score should have been 7-5 Mets...just saying

It was puzzling that Jerry Manuel did not argue the call at the plate in the sixth inning. Fernado Tatis did not even react. It appeared that David Wright was urging Jerry to argue the call, as he felt Fernando slid under the tag.
The Mets got off to a good start last night with a 6-5 thriller over the Phillies. The Mets rallied back after Philadelphia took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Can you believe the Mets hit three home-runs in one game. Coming into the game the Mets had hit only 34 home-runs which was 28th in the Major Leagues. They had 16 on the road and 18 at home. Seven home-runs in total last night. Amazin'
