Will 'Revenge' Be Sweet?

I%20WANT%20REVENGE.jpg

Time for horse racing to take center stage this weekend. Just like college basketball's March Madness, everyone has an opinion on who will win the Triple Crown races, starting with tomorrow's Kentucky Derby.

The favorite at the moment: ' I Want Revenge.' There are likely many teenagers who are envious of jockey Joe Telamo, who left high school three years ago at age 16 to chase a career in the saddle. He's talented, and so apparently is the horse, winner of the Gotham Stakes and The Wood Memorial.

Keep in mind: This is the biggest showcase in racing, and 20 horses (the max) are scheduled to leave from the gate. 'I Want Revenge' leaves from Number 13, so they'll be plenty of traffic to wade through.

My pick in what's expected to be a muddy track-'Advice' at 30-1 or so as I type this. He's not considered upper tier, but maybe the best of the rest. Other possibility: 'Chocolate Candy.' Mud is a great equalizer. 10 years after a surprise with 'Charismatic', perhaps I'll strike a nice payoff tomorrow. I will NEVER forget the late, GREAT Jerry Giirard's look as 'Charismatic' grabbed the lead down the stretch!

With 16 horses in double digit odds, Saturday's exotic bets could prove fruitful. Remember: Like a night out drinking with a designated driver, please wager responsibly.

Last chance for NY Mets pitcher Oliver Perez...

7:48PM | May 1, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 3

Jerry Manuel has already said he will move Ollie from the pitching rotation if he does not perform well in his next start. That next time is tomorrow at Citizens Bank Park. Oliver Perez's first four starts have been terrible...9.31 ERA, 20 earned runs off 23 hits...okay, so beyond terrible. I am pulling for Ollie (especially because Johan really believes in him and I think Johan does not support someone lightly) but Perez really needs to compete for two reasons: the location and the others.

Hey Omar, No “Edge?” Blame Yourself!!

In case you haven’t heard, Mets GM Omar Minaya criticized the team before Friday night’s game in Philadelphia for lacking an “edge.”

omar.jpg

Whether or not that’s true is up for debate. I think you can argue either way, but that’s not the point we’re trying to make here.

Instead, I ask that you consider the source; Mr. Minaya. Hey Omar, if this team is lacking an edge, as you claim, isn’t that YOUR fault?

Tipping Pitches Now The Biggest Issue For A-Rod

So Selena Roberts' new book, A-Rod: The Many Lives Of Alex Rodriguez, hits bookstores today. As our Matt Estreich pointed out the other day, the supposed new steroid allegations shouldn't be that big a deal-at least for the moment. If MLB ever finds that A-Rod did 'roids while with the Yankees, he could face the possibility of a suspension. But Rodriguez faces a bigger can of worms among his union brethren IF allegations that he tipped pitches are true.

The Mets Oliver Perez Banished to the Bullpen

8:41PM | May 4, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 1

So will a period of time in the bullpen be the key to getting Oliver Perez on the right track? I don't think so. I mean how is he supposed to gain any confidence and really work out the kinks while waiting to come into a game? (a game...by the way...where I expect the Mets to be down a few runs and trying to stop the bleeding...) Ollie himself knows he is in a funk and needs help. In another post, one of our very competent bloggers suggested the lefty seek psychological assistance. I know a couple of professional athletes who have benefitted from having someone help them work out their situations. No one will argue sports, at any level, is as much about the mental as the physical.

Yogi:One Of Baseball's Greatest Treasures

yogi-berra%201.jpg caricature_yogi_berra.jpg

Those that read our blog know that I am a lifelong Mets fan and the Yankees are to me, well, "the other team in town." That's about as kind as I can be.

But to every rule there is always an exception-or in this case, exceptions. Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle are baseball greats for whom even Yankee haters can only show affection.
Another man who deserves our eternal affection is one Lawrence Peter Berra, "Yogi" to the entire sports world.

Berra's spent more than 60 years in the game as a player, coach, manager and ambassador for the Yankees and Mets. We forget today that he owns 10 World Series rings and three MVP awards, a trmendous clutch hitter Today we think of Yogi for his off field contributions like his museum and his charitable endeavors.

Then there's Mr. Berra the the humorist. Among his many malaprops, "Steve McQueen looks great in this movie. He must have made it before he died." "This restaurant is too crowded, no one comes here anymore." "It ain't over till it's over." "We may be late, but we're making good time." "90 percent of this game is half mental." They're funny sayings with plenty of truth to them.

This afternoon, Daily News cartoonist Bill Gallo and sportswriter Phil Pepe got together with Yogi at Gallagher's Steakhouse in Manhattan to reminisce about his time in baseball-and work in a few malaprops. Check out our video board.

Yanks Leave Fans Out To Dry

RAIN%20DELAY.jpg

If you stayed for the entire Yankees-Red Sox matchup last night, yours is a brave and resolute soul. The game didn't start till 9:22 and end at 1:10 am this morning because of the inclement weather.

We've said it before: The Lords of Baseball care very little about YOU the fan. Once that ticket is paid for, that game could have been played in the depths of hell with fans wearing gasoline suits. Last night's matchup should have been postponed. Making fans who have paid hundreds of dollars for tickets and then making them wait more than two hours IN A RAINSTORM-particularly on a weeknight- just to start the game is wrong. Don't misunderstand-it happens all the time everywhere.

But you want even more sinful? Newsday, The Daily News and WFAN all reported today that many fans were told that the game would not go on, so they left. When some tried to return, they were denied.

I understand that "the letter of the law" claims that if you leave a game, you can't return. BUT: To inconvenience fans and then confuse them and be out and out mean to them-that's bad. It's actions like this that result in baseball losing fans. One day the fans will get the message: You're not appreciated once you hand over your money." Then they will not see the need to return to the ballpark.

Mets Johan Santana: Always sweating it out

Johan Santana has been amazing!! 6 starts..54 strikeouts...BUT his offensive support: 12 runs including tonight's lucky break run. What does this guy have to do to get some support?

johan%20today.jpg
(Thomas A. Ferrara, Newsday)

Several players have commented on how frustrating it has been to NOT give Johan the offense he deserves. Well, the one who should be annoyed is Johan himself! He is always sweating it out instead of relishing in his good performance and sitting back while his team says "you give me a strikeout, I will give you run". Wouldn't that be great? A run for every strikeout... yea right?!? Thank you Johan because we never worry with you on the mound. That must be tiring... Knowing his work ethic and a mental toughness that is equal to his physical skill...probably not.

Manny, Be Manny, But Manny Be Stupid

MANNY.jpg

Baseball's latest black eye re the use of steroids/PED's: Manny Ramirez. The Dodgers outfielder suspended 50 games for using a banned substance. He DIDN'T test positive for steroids and HGH. But he was found to have used HCG, a female fertility drug used by men to increase testosterone levels, cure ED, AND help men cycle off steroids.

Manny didn't appeal his suspension, but the fact that he says he was prescribed this by an MD for personal use and "told it was OK"-tells you that Ramirez is another athlete who feels he is above reproach. Why else would he do this after all this time? Team doctors check with players all the time. If Manny really needed help with ED (a common side effect of steroids) couldn't the Dodgers' medical staff help him? Maybe Ramirez should have made a trip to Andrew and The Boston Medical Group that we always hear on the radio 14 times a day.

I NEVER thought I would say this, but it may indeed be time for a zero tolerance policy from MLB. Why? Because the only thing these guys seem to understand is money. Ramirez loses nearly 8 million dollars over the next two months-but still walks off with over 16 million when the season ends. A lifetime ban would be a good start; a blood test for HGH would be another 'positive' move. It's the only way the fans can have confidence in the game-and the only way players who are clean can go about their business without suspicion. At this point, I'm so tired of steroids that if MLB had the guts to lose a year so the game was clean, I might accept it. The used car salesman Bud Selig has screwed with bthis game so much it makes me sick. Bud, here's your chance to make good.

Maybe we should all be thankful that Bernie Madoff DID steal money from the Wilpon family. If Manny had done this as a Met, the PR disaster would be beyond comprehension. Let me be the first to say, "Thanks, Bernie."

Daly was quite the successful coach in basketball, leading the Detroit Pistons to 2 NBA Championships and he won Olympic Gold with the "Dream Team" in 1992. He also coached locally, guiding the New Jersey Nets to the playoffs in both seasons that he led the team. But it's real easy to look at a man based on his accomplishments. I think the opinions of his peers are just as important.

His newest venture, Weplay, is the "center of the youth sports universe". It's an online community where players, coaches, and of course, we, parents can manage all of our kids' activities. There is a calendar that sends you emails or SMS texts to remind you when soccer practice is going on and who needs to bring the water and orange slices to the next game.

Pros like Softball pitcher Jennie Finch, NBA MVP Lebron James and the Yankees' Derek Jeter give video training tips. Then, there are the videos of Jeter and other pros before they made it big. Jeter fielding grounders in high school and Peyton Manning playing backyard football are among my favorites. The philosophy behind this is to show that these athletes began like so many kids do...on the fields of their local towns, in Little Leagues and Pop Warner football teams across the country. Check out our interview with Steve as he takes you through the site...its EASY and FREE! Love it!!!! Also go to http://www.weplay.com/ , register and win a chance to be in the next training video with Derek Jeter. Mom and Dad, I know you want to but the contest is for the kids! This site works for us "big kids" too. I am about to find myself a volleyball team to play with near where I live...

Let them touch: Umpires and Major League Baseball

9:02PM | May 14, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 2

I know the rule; umpires in baseball are NOT allowed to have any physical contact with players on the field. Today, Major League Umpire Paul Schrieber apologized for placing his hand on the back of the Detroit Tigers Magglio Ordonez. Here's the scenario: Schrieber called Ordonez out on strikes last night in the 7th against the Twins; Ordonez argued the pitch was low. Schrieber said that to avoid ejecting him, he was ushering him away. Technically, it was a shove. Anyone who has ever been shoved knows how annoying it is, but I think the ump's reasoning is a good one. He should have to apologize for the shove but for the "contact" itself, come on... Referees touch NBA players all the time as they do in hockey (usually to break up a fight) but baseball has some wierd "Dirty Dancing" rule. "This is my dance space; this is your dance space."

Beginning with the excessive free agent signings (CC, A.J. and Teixeira, too??!!), the A-Rod steroid fiasco and then all the junk that’s gone on with the new stadium, I was finally starting to understand what made Yankee-haters loathe this team so much.

Delgado's Out Long Term: What Do The Mets Do?

4:44PM | May 18, 2009 | posted by Bobby Taute | comments: 0

alg_delgado.jpg

It's official: Carlos Delgado has a torn labrum in his right hip, and will have surgery Tuesday. There's no official timetable, but we could be looking at a conservative 6-8 weeks-and possibly end his playing career.

Now thatDelgado is out long term, what do the Mets do? Do they look for a first baseman? Tofd Helton would be a nice get-but a risky one. He still has three years to go on a a pricey nine year deal and a degenerative back condition. People talk about the 'Coors Field Effect ' with Helton. Remember 2 things: Most above average players do better at home than the road, and Helton is still very good. As I said, he comes with a "Buyer Beware" sign, but when healthy you'd still take him over Nick Johnson or Adam Dunn. Paul Konerko also comes to mind-a few years younger than Helton, with the HR power you want at first.

I will say this: All spring the Mets lauded Daniel Murphy as a can't miss terrific hitter of the future. He's put in a lot of work in left field. No matter what you do at first, keep Murphy in left-at least for this season. DON'T jerk him around the way the Yankees did with Joba Chamberlain the last few years. The best way to see if a kid can play is-let him play. Suddenly, Jerry Manuel's love fest for Murphy seems to have grown cold. Ramon Castro and Ryan Church are also in Chateau Bow Wow for mysterious reasons. Pinch hitting for Murphy last night with just called up Angel Pagan was a mistake. Not sending up Jose Reyes or Castro once he the decision to pinch hit for Murphy was made an even bigger one.

I say mix and match Fernando Tatis, Gary Sheffield, and Jeremy Reed at first and look for snother starting pitcher at the trade deadline. As long as the core of Reyes, Wright and Beltran are themselves, and Luis Castillo is productive, the Met offense will be fine. It's the pitching after Johan Santana that is the problem. Omar Minaya, get busy.

I always found it interesting that in the amateur ranks, from Little League to college, the head man of a baseball team is a 'coach.' In the pros, he's a 'manager.' Let's face it, perception has it that Jerry Manuel has not done a great job of 'managing' the NY Mets lately. GM Omar Minaya isn't exactly burning the candle at both ends either.

Murphy's Law For The Mets: Yes, Pun Intended

7:06PM | May 21, 2009 | posted by Bobby Taute | comments: 1

JOSE%20REYES%20INJURY.jpg

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse for the Mets, it did last night. Shortstop Jose Reyes re injured his strained calf. He's got tendonitis, and is day to day. Please Omar Minaya, PLEASE-DL Jose NOW-don't do this "day to day" crap. Let him heal and be ready for the bulk of the season. Let's dump Ramon Martinez NOW. He is not a big league shortstop anymore. Argenis Reyes may not be much better, but he sure as heck WON'T be worse. Get him up from Buffalo. Gary Sheffield has been sick the last few days. Well, somebody better tell me that Gary was puking on his uniform and crapping his pants in the 9th inning last night! Why else would Jerry Manuel let Martinez hit with the tying run on base? Oh, that's right: Mr Manel had already pinch hit Fernando Tatis, his "emergency" shortstop, for Ryan "We really need him even though he's in my doghouse" Church. Result: Assuming Sheffield was near death, Martinez has to face Broxton's 100 mph heater in the 9th. Great thinking there, Jerry. I'd almost rather you sent up Johan Santana.

Meanwhile, Daniel Murphy, worse than Todd Hundley in left field, looked like Wes Parker at first base. Now, he just has to get his stroke back. But at least the kid is happy at first-that's half the battle. Now his bat can be his primary focus. The work ethic is still there to be a good defensive player, but the Mets need all the offense they can get in a hurry. Omar: The words "offense" and "hurry" are for you.

I wish I could understand this 'closer mentality' thing. J. J. Putz says his mental focus just ain't there when he's pitching in the 8th. J.J.: You KNEW what you were getting into when you signed your deal. Shut up and pitch. K-Rod (Francisco Rodriguez) may make things a bit tense when he comes in a game, but he has no blown saves-and strangely had no problem pitching in the 8th the other night. Never mind that Livan Hernandez should have started the 8th. Manuel, like most managers, has bought into the "know your role" garbage. So here comes Putz in the 8th, even though he says his neck is stiff. So, J.J., it IS fair to say your biggest problems are from the neck up.

I know it's early, I say that all the time. But how many games do you expect the Mets to win this weekend at Fenway, even with Johan Santana going Friday night? At the one-eighth pole of the season, the Mets are floundering. With all the injuries and an offense that hasn't homered in a week, Memorial Day and the Nationals can't come fast enough. The same can be said for Minaya and Manuel. It's a broken record, but its time to find a way to right the ship, or lose the season in a hurry. That's NOT what fans who are spending a fortune on tickets at Citi Field want to hear in May.

Sunday Caps A Weird Weekend For NY Baseball

Such was the case during this rarest of weekends, when each New York team was playing the arch inter-divisional rival of the OTHER Big Apple club.

Yankees Alex Rodriguez: Boo if you want, I don't care

Can you really blame the Texas fans, though? They supported ARod even when he was sent away to the Yankees (well maybe not ALL fans, but most, I would think said, hey he was good here and gave us some excitement). Mets Mash Unit Tries To Hold The Fort

METS%20LOGO.jpg

The Mets FINALLY did right by a player and placed Jose Reyes on the DL. Reyes has gone almost two weeks with that bad calf, and really should have been put on the shelf as soon as he re-injured his calf last week in L.A. Ryan Church goes on the DL with a bad hamstring. Plus, Carlos Beltran, the team's MVP thus far, won't play till at least Friday because of a bruised fibula.

Mets fans, say hello to 20 year old (he sure looks a lot older) Fernando Martinez in right field, Jeremy Reed in center, and Gary Sheffield in left for a while. Brian Schneider's health problems have made Omir Santos a household name in Flushing.

This isn't what we were expecting when Opening Day arrived in April. But until and unless GM Omar Minaya makes a deal, Tatis, Daniel Murphy, Pagan, Sheffield will have to help out David Wright for a while. Over the long haul, an aging Sheffield and Tatis, career scrubs Pagan and Santos, and rookies Murphy and Martinez would scare the makeup off Joan Rivers.

But there is good news: If there was ever a time to rest the wounded, its now, Counting tonight's game, the Mets next 12 contests are against the Nationals, Marlins, Pirates and Mationals again. As long as the pitching holds up, the Mets can munch on the bottom feeders of the National League the next few weeks before things get serious again with the hated Phillies and Yankees.

My take: let the injured rest for as long as needed. My beef with Minaya is with the guys he's brought in. Ramon Martinez is NOT a major leaguer. Same with newly acquired Wilson Valdez. At least with all the bumps and bruises, Jeremy Reed has to play the outfield as opposed to butchering first base. Daniel Murphy is much more settled in the infield after his outfield lessons with Iron Glove Greg Luzinski (LOL) fell apart.

The scrubs have their chance to shine-let's see what they-and the Mets-do with it.

So I really didn't know whether to put this in the MMA or baseball section of the blog. Is there a "I'm a complete moron" section? I'll have to check with our IT guys.

Jose Canseco made another faux pas that rivals beating his wives, drunken driving, going anywhere near Madonna, endorsing steroids or appearing on "The Surreal Life." I have a hard time feeling sorry for him, but THIS TIME the person he most came close to damaging was himself.

NY Mets: Hanging with Fans

11:01PM | May 28, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 0

The NY Mets spent their off day mingling with fans who spent a heap of money to get up close and personal. It's for a good cause, though; the funds raised will go to the Mets Foundation. The guys were relaxed and should be after sweeping the Nationals with a makeshift crew. It goes to show that there is some depth on the team. Here are some of the players and the manager on how they are feeling and what they expect in the weeks ahead. Gary Sheffield is great when I ask him about playing every day and listen to Jerry Manuel about where Daniel Murphy will play the rest of the season.

NY Mets: Pick a New Song

4:04PM | May 29, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 5

Okay, despite what you might have heard on the radio or the like, we here in the PIX sports office have been talking about the music played at Citi Field, one song in particular, for days. "Sweet Caroline"...REALLY?! All I think about when the song starts playing is the Red Sox. It's their song, just like Sinatra's "New York, New York" is as Yankee as Derek Jeter and the Boss. So why are the Mets playing other teams' music? Maybe they don't have the right alternatives. We walked around the newsroom, talked to loved ones, pondered other options even on our off time...(yes we are an exciting bunch) and came up with a few suggestions. Please give us yours. I know the Mets' "Music Man" ...we could send him the list.

Bob P.
"NY State of Mind" (Billy Joel), depending on the moment in the game
"Play the Game" (Queen)

Eric T.
None--how about just the sound of bat on ball. If there has to be music than anything from the good ol' organ will do just fine.

Caroline
"Glory Days" (Bruce Springsteen)
"I would walk 500 miles" (the Proclaimers) **My side note: remember these are songs that kids must hear too. I think there has to be some sort of "cheese" factor to the song and usually that consists of a catching tune and/or verses or chorus. Both of these fit the bill.

Bob T.
"Centerfield" (John Fogerty)
"The Cheap Seats" (Alabama)

Saul
Keep it simple..."Meet the Mets"

Chris
"Momma said Knock You Out" (LL Cool J)

**Another side note: the Mets have used "Let it Rock" (Kevin Rudolf) a lot this season. Adopt this one or on the same, more contemporary line, how about "Stronger" (Kayne West). That gets me pumped on the treadmill.

Tom Seaver on Johan Santana and more...

10:00PM | May 29, 2009 | posted by Lolita Lopez | comments: 1

I was honored as always to speak with one of the greats, Tom Seaver, last night at the Mets Foundation Dinner in Greenwich, CT. He is such a gentleman and an immense library of sports stories. Seaver divulged some of his conversation with Johan Santana that night, told me about a moment when he didn't have his stuff (yea right!) and spoke about what real pitching is all about. Take a listen!

LeBron Loses: Maybe the Fix is NOT in!

Maybe the NBA isn't fixed after all. LeBron James and the Cavaliers lost 103-90 to the Orlando Magic in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. So the dream matchup featuring Kobe Bryant's Lakers vs. James' Cavaliers that has been hyped everywhere will not come to pass. Bryant held up his end of the bargain but King James was not able to do the same.

Hughes or Wang: Decision Time for the Yanks

You know that expression “a nice problem to have?” The Yankees are facing one of those “nice problems” right now.

It seems that Chien Ming Wang is finally rounding into form after his early season troubles left him with an ERA hovering somewhere in the 30s.

While he was finding himself in the minors, Wang’s replacement, Phil Hughes, has pitched well (and at times brilliantly).

This afternoon in Cleveland, both Hughes (starter, 95 pitches) and Wang (long reliever, 42 pitches) threw against the Indians – and afterward both suggested they want to start five days from now.

So where do the Yanks go from here?
