Why I love Sports!

Devin Harris hits game winning shot vs. the 76ers

This is why I love sports... Last night at the Izod Center, Devin Harris of the Nets hit an incredible 47 foot shot from just behind the halfcourt line at the buzzer to beat the 76ers 98-96. That heave capped a 39 point night for Harris. The Nets snapped a 5 game losing streak. An unbelieveable way to end the game. For a moment, I was able to forget about all that's wrong with sports.

Harris' shot was so close that the referees had to watch replays for 2 and half minutes to determine if the shot was good. A TV freeze frame showed that Harris released the ball before the red lights came on by just the narrowest of margins. Yes, I'm happy because my team came out on the winning side but its moments like these, that bring me back in when I become cynical of sports.

Like many of you, I've heard enough about A-Rod and his steroids. I'm tired of stories like Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg (and in the foot, if ya know what I mean.) I don't want to hear another Pac-Man Jones story. Charles Barkley's going to jail for DUI. And on and on I could go.

When I first got into sports journalism many years ago... Its because I loved great moments. I didn't really want to talk stats or off season moves... Not my cup of tea although I know a lot of guys who love that. Its the on the field play, or on the court or on the ice that gets me going. Some examples: Mike Piazza's HR after 9/11. Michael Jordan's 55 point performance at the Garden. The David Tyree catch in the Giants Super Bowl win... Just to name a few.

So I know there will be more scandal. Some prominent baseball player will be outed for doing steroids or some athlete will hit his wife or someone will make a really stupid statement. Its always something. But when those things happen, I will go to my mental rolodex and remember this play because it was pretty special.

Just an amazing finish. I was watching the game on YES and could not believe he could lose the ball, regain it and get off a shot in 1.8 seconds. The replay showed that he did. Great Shot!!! Great Finish at the Izod Center. Lets Go Nets!

Here here Chris! That basket in yesterday's game was one of those moments that even had the "I know nothing about sports" Kaity Tong excited. Let's focus on the action on the field, court, etc and tell the stories that are interesting and fun to hear. This is not to say we don't have a responsibility to report on the controversial things but let's not put all our focus on it. That's what we try to do here.
