Why NOW, Joe?

Thanks to this lovely weather and feeling a little under it, I haven't had a chance to write about the Joe Torre book snafu. I don't begrudge Torre the opportunity to WRITE a book. Hey, I'm still waiting for somebody to pick up my WPIX memoirs, but sadly I don't have the name power that Torre does. It's the timing of Joe's penstrokes that bothers me.
First off, Torre doesn't appear to be vindictive, only honest from his point of view. For all the supposed Alex Rodriguez bashing, the NY Post and other outlets failed to mention how much Torre praised A-Rod's dedication to the game and his work ethic, PR people and media outlets will only release early what they think will sell the book/newspapers/TV shows. If all that came out was sunshine and light about Derek Jeter, who cares?
Still, I wonder why this book is being done NOW, while Torre is still an manager. He can easily write this book in a year or two after he leaves the Dodgers. Instead, Dodger players, current and future, will have to wonder if Jow will have their back when times get tough this coming season, (not to mention last year) or will he just write another 'tell all' book? During his 12 years in the Bronx, Torre was masterful at building trust with players. No matter how true the stories and opinions in the book are, Joe may lose some of that trust. Larry Bowa, Torre's 3rd base coach in the late Yankee days and now in L-A, admitted today that Torre will have to stand up and face the criticism about this book.
On the surface, it looks like Joe's being hypocritical , having bashed books by David Wells and Jose Canseco in the past. I say: let's read the book and see what's in it-though I wish Torre had waited till he was into retirement before making another foray as an author.

I love Joe Torre, there is nothing he can say that would change my feelings. he is one of the greatest manager's of all time. I don't think he was being cruel. I think some of things were defintally true. Let the truth be told. I'm sure any one of the players from the yankees would take him back in a heart beat. He has to make up for lost revenue. I'm sure the yanks paid him a lot more then he makes now. love torre. I'm not a big reader, but I will be reading this book

im glad with what he says, this team is a sorry bunch of overpaid, overexposed , juiced up, commercial hogging, madonna infatuated , drunken driving losers. when they let joe go they lost all the class they ever had. i hope it gets even more embarrassing for them this year
A lot of things come into play as to why Torres wrote this book after his Yankees stint.
#1. Stienbrenner wrath....
#2. New York Fans / Media...
As far a ARod (IMO) I find this to be a publicity stunt. ARod moved from a position where he was list amongst the top 3 shortstops to 3rd base. When on 3rd base he still produced numbers and endured !
I don't agree with the amount of money the players make for playing this sports. Most play like little babies, whining, yet Arod number speak for themselves.
As Derek Jeters number dwindle he's praised ??????? What a joke. We should have kept SORIANO instead. (Torres mistake, is this in the book ?????)
New York is a resort for players to relax. Then they kick ass when they move out of town. So a coach write a book ?!
If the Dodger played the Yankees in the World Series. This book ju$t raised the stakes. A lot of Fluff !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lolita,
"The most beloved figure in all of New York sports history" and you are not speaking about Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio or possibly a dozen other NY sports figures? Joe Torre has never been, nor will he ever be the most beloved sports figure anywhere. New York sports didn't begin in the 1990s. Shame on you, Lolita.
