There are just some people that leave a kind of imprint on your life...Warren Wolf is one of them. Probably best known for his coaching accomplishments, his true legacy lies in his humble and inspiring approach to life.
After 51 seasons, the 81 year old Wolf said good-bye to the only school he ever coached for, Brick Township High School.
During his career, Wolf compiled a record of 361-122-11, making him the winningest high school football coach in New Jersey history. He had 42 winning seasons, 25 division titles, six undefeated seasons and six NJSIAA section titles.
Wolf helped put the Jersey shore on the map when it came to high school football. Between 1959 and 1962 Wolf's teams won 28 straight games, including three straight undefeated seasons. Brick won the first-ever playoff game in New Jersey back in 1974 when it beat Camden, 21-20. During his retirement press conference he said,
"It's time, my energy is down, my emotions are still up. I really don't want to retire but I don't feel I have the strength to do it."
Wolf leaves Brick Township on a high note, the Green Dragons finished this season at 6-4, their first winning season in five years.
But perhaps Wolf's greatest victory is the way he has acknowledged and has nurtured ALL those around him. He is considered more than just a coach....he is like a father figure, a mentor, and a staple of his community. He once served as mayor of Brick Township, an Ocean County freeholder, a state assemblyman, and also the president of the Brick Township council for multiple years.
He is a World War II veteran, a loving father of two, and has been married to his wife Peg for almost 60 years. One can easily see how he is respected on so many levels.
Considered a man of few words, he coached the game thanklessly. And although Wolf will no longer be blowing his whistle on the sideline, it is his selfless attitude and serving others that will be remembered more than any record.
Richard Roberts, a Brick football staff member comments on Wolf's character.
