Is Andy Serious? If Yes, Then He Should Go

So Andy Pettitte's agents claim that a mystery team has swooped in with a three year, $36 million dollar deal, while the Yankees best offer was a flat $10 million for 2009. First of all, which team was it? The Durham Bulls? The NY Knights? Perhaps the Bad News Bears chirped in. If Pettitte is telling the truth, then the Yankees should let him go.

Here's the rub: The Yanks DON'T need Andy. Not after all the HGH, "Roger Clemens is still my friend" and the horrid second half he had at age 36. The Bombers have their #1 thru 4 starters already: Sabathia, Burnett, Wang and Chamberlain. I was against the Yankees' signing Burnett and think Joba should stay in the pen to setup for Mariano Rivera. But that top four ain't bad. I understand the appeal to bringing Pettitte back, and I know he's a big game pitcher. Still, at some point youth must be served. Kennedy and Hughes are still young and growing into big league starters. If the Yankees MUST spend for veterans, go get Derek Lowe, who'd sure look nice in a Mets uniform.

If this story is a total fabrication, Pettitte may be left holding an empty bag. Then again, if the Yankees do bring the lefty back, it won't be the first time they've overspent for pitching. Do Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano ring a bell?

Enough Already Andy Pettitte! Here is a guy that needed to be pursuaded to come back each of the past two years for $16M per. After a sub par season in which he complained of elbow soreness in September, he will not accept the New York Yankees generous offer for 1 year $10M. Not bad money for a fifth starter. One baseball executive indicated that Andy is no more than a $8M pitcher at best, during this point in his career. Does he have a 3-year $36M deal out there? If so, he should take it before the team realizes what a poor risk this is. Andy Pettitte's legacy as a legendary New York Yankee is on the line. It is your move Andy. Why was his family so important over the past two years, but now he is prepared to sign a three-year contract.

Good points, James. Isn't strange, sad and weird in these rimes that we have to say someone isn't "worth" more than 8 million?
