Great fight, or great waste of time?

If you're an MMA and particularly UFC fan, you'll probably be tuning in to tomorrow's UFC 91 pay per view to see Brock Lesnar fight Randy 'The Natural" Couture for the UFC Heavyweight title. But the matchup has more the makings of a WWE event than a legitimate MMA fight.

Lesnar certainly knows about wrestling. He was an NCAA champion in 2000 and a top draw in Vince McMahon's brand prior to going into 'real fighting.' He's only had 3 pro fights, and though he has talent appears to have less experience than the other next big thing in MMA, Kimbo Slice. This fight is wrong for all the wrong reasons:

If Lesnar wins, fans will say Couture is/was too old after a 14 month lomg layoff because of disputes with the UFC plus Todd Beard and Affliction. (Couture's greatest battles of late appear to be outside the ring. Earlier today, Beard resigned from Affliction, claiming he will seek treatment for alcohol abuse).

If Couture wins, where does that leave the UFC? Couture at 45, can't fight forever, and there's no question that the decline of Chuck Liddell and the meltdown of Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson that Dana White wants a poster boy for his brand.

A guy with only three fights getting a title shot and the chance to headline a large Pay Per View event sure looks like a slap in the face to guys that have spent their lives trying to make MMA a mainstream sport. But Dana White got his wish-I, and millions of others, will be spending our Saturday night wondering if we'll see a genuine rising star, or a show bent on making a quick buck.
