Instant Replay: A Questionable Call?

Instant-Replay.jpgProfessional sports, such as football, have been using instant replay for years to review questionable calls on the field. Major League Baseball will begin utilizing it today for debatable home run calls. Thank god, right? Now we no longer have to worry about teams losing games because of a foul ball called fair or a fan interference that went unnoticed.

But will MLB eventually begin to use replay for other controversial calls, making the game even longer than it already is? And of more immediate concern, does it make sense to introduce such a crucial rule near the end of the season? Read more after the jump.

Sure, Bud Selig says he will only use the replay for home run calls, but I doubt that it’s going to stop there. An umpire’s judgment is involved in at least half the game. Can you imagine it being put on pause every time a manager argues a call? Games would last forever! Allowing instant replay at all times would ruin baseball.

Many games have been decided by iffy home run calls. In the interest of fairness and accuracy, the use of instant replay of baseball is long overdue. But why start now? And will it stop with home run calls? Stay tuned. - Matan Cohen, Special to Bobby v. the World.

Although it may be a sound move to institute instand replay for home-runs, I think it may be dubious to start it on August 28, 2008. This is a rule that should be initiated at the beginning of the 2009 Baseball season. To have played virtually five months of the 2008 season without the replay rule and then play September and the post season with it does not seem like a responsible decision.

The replay rule is absolutely necessary! Better sooner than later in my opinion.
