Wow! A great fight in boxing! Who knew it could happen?
If you’re like me, you probably watched Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith for free on CBS’ Elite XC MMA card Saturday night rather than drop down $50 bucks for Pay-Per-View of Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito scrap. Both fights were good - Lawler retains his middleweight title (185 pounds in most MMA organizations) with a second round knockout. More after the jump.
The Margarito-Cotto fight was an instant classic, one that boxing DESPERATELY needed. The boxing match got very little play in the New York TV media. That’s a shame, because this was a slugfest that Margarita finished with a TKO in Round 11. Cotto, a fast starter, scored points early but never hurt the “Tiajuana Tornado.” Margarita took his time and dominated whenever he and Cotto were on the ropes. Margarita earns a piece of the welterweight title. Let me be clear right now. If Oscar De la Hoya thinks he can bring some juice to the sport by fighting Margarita, yes, he can. But the attention would last about as long as Brett Favre’s career with the Jets and fizzle out before it was worth the time.
