Bad News Bonds
The Yankees have been dominant since the All-Star break, and they show no sign of slowing down. They won eight straight heading into Sunday night’s game with Boston. Days before the trade deadline, they strengthened their lineup by acquiring outfielder Xavier Nady and relief pitcher Damaso Marte from the Pittsburgh Pirates. But in a division like the AL East, there is always room for roster improvement. So the Yankees will do anything to gain an extra edge as they head into crunch time in September… even consider signing the Homerun King himself, Barry Bonds!
On paper, Bonds is one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the game. (Whether steroids allowed him to break the homerun record is still an unanswered question.) Sure, he’s been a great player, but whose to say he’ll even perform after being sidelined since last season? More after the jump.
Bonds has been shunned for a reason. Here is a guy who has always put his own interests before those of his team. He has never been a leader or a favorite in the clubhouse. And let’s face it: the guy is in his forties! Bringing Bonds to New York would only spell trouble for the Yankees, who are finally clicking as a team. Plus, who can forget those federal indictment charges? Bonds carries a lot of baggage that could well generate a media frenzy and pose a major distraction.
History shows that selfish athletes produce frustration, hurt productivity, and rarely change their ways. (Stephon Marbury of the Knicks is a good example of this.) As of now, the Yankees are the hottest team in baseball and are loaded with talent. Why would a team doing so well consider jeopardizing its chemistry for a guy like Bonds? - Matan Cohen, Special to Bobby v. the World

Bonds in NY, even though farfetched, should bring a heavy buzz around a new yankee stadium.
I agree. I think Barry Bonds is a fake. When his team goes to one hotel when they're on the road, Bonds purposely checks himself into another hotel to stay away from his team. Not cool
I don't think taking Bonds is a move that will benefit the team in any way. If he comes to New York, he could be a huge distraction, and the Yankees already have enough sluggers to make a run at the playoffs. Also, picking up Nady was a smart move, and filled a serious void.
The last thing the Yankees need is another big name player, I think everyone can agree with that. I know Hank Steinbrenner is interested, but I do not think Brian Cashman will buckle under the pressure of Steinbrenner. He knows how bad of a decision it would be to bring Bonds to this team who is finally playing up to its potential.
Sometimes the team is bigger then the player though, and can make even the biggest heads put their tail between their legs. Randy Moss, once an arrogant distraction, joined the most powerful football franchise of his time and it produced a humble, record breaking season for Moss and an almost perfect season for the Patriots. Point being when a team has as much clout and talent as the Patriots or Yankees, they are BIGGER then any individual and can overshadow all of an athletes issues. Although whether or not Bonds can still be shaped is up in the air, but the "homerun king" for the league minimum... Who knows what to do? Great thought provoking article though, makes for a great debate.
hmmm, let's see folks, he's 44, 2 blown out knees & 14 federal indictments - yeah, that's our guy.
And for our next trick, we're gonna raise Ted Williams from the dead and beat him to death with bats in Monument Park... we're just full of surprises here in Gotham.
Barry Bonds is still dangerous at the plate. I'm surprised another AL team hasn't made a move for him just yet -- I don't know how well he would "click" with the yankees, but he will probably continue his streak of perenial seasons with a .400+ OBP regardless of whether or not he is at the top of his game.
The Yankees are better off without him, believe me. Even if Barry behaves himself you know that he will be on the front page of the Post and Daily News every single day. Just think about how much Bonds was cast into the spotlight for the past three or four years, and how much off-field crap the Giants players and management had to go through because of the Bonds media circus. Let's just put it this way - there are 770,000 people living in San Fran., and 8.3 million people living in New York City. Over ten times the amount of people = 10 times the circus.
Big B Barry Bonds is bald, old, fat and the steroids should of worn off by now so unless he gets the grand daddy of steroids that will make him perform like Fat Albert Pujols, the yankees are better investing in John Stamos, at least he's good looking.
