First off, I have to correct an error in Friday’s blog. I said Matt Serra was trying to regain the UFC Welterweight title from George St. Pierre Saturday night. I was wrong. Serra, despite not defending the belt due to injury in the last year, was technically still the title holder-while in the meantime St. Pierre won the ‘Interim’ title against Matt Hughes.

The only title that matters now-St. Pierre IS the champ once again-by TKO Round 2 in front of a raucous hometown Montreal crowd at UFC 83. The Canadian dominated the East Meadow native from start to finish.

Serra says he’s going to take some time off, go on vacation with his wife and hopefully fight Hughes in the fall. Yes, Serra was lucky-a close split decision over Chris Lytle in The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback in 2006, earning a title shot at St. Pierre 12 months ago. I know plenty of UFC/MMA fans who think Serra was just a personality liked by UFC President Dana White. He was NEVER considered a serious contender till TUF 4. Some even thought (and I can’t say I totally disagree) that Serra’s first fight with St. Pierre was a setup. WHATEVER: St. Pierre was so dominant; the chances for a third fight lost a lot of steam.

At least Serra, over hyped, overrated, and in over his head, had his 15 minutes of fame. Now he can concentrate on his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools on Long Island. St. Pierre could be a champion for a long time.
