Homeless Helping Homeless In HELP USA Thanksgiving Dinner

homeless1125.jpg

In the true spirit of giving, homeless residents at the HELP USA shelter on Wards Island in the Bronx will be cooking and serving Thanksgiving dinner for over 200 fellow homeless residents this holiday.

The dozen chefs-in-training are all currently homeless, living in the HELP SEC shelter, and are enrolled in a nine-week Culinary Arts Training program at HELP USA's Ward's Island site. They take daily classes from an inspiring instructor, Chef Daniel MacGuire.

Chef Daniel is a former corporate executive chef with Marriott Hotels who now teaches the homeless residents culinary and life skills to help them succeed in and out of the kitchen. Several students have been placed in restaurants around NYC, and two recent graduates are working as sous-chefs to Chef Daniel in the HELP kitchen at the very shelter where they used to live.

The Culinary Arts Training program is one of several training programs HELP USA offers to its homeless residents in an effort to help them develop skills that will lead to rapid employment and permanent housing placement. HELP USA is a leading national nonprofit providing shelter, jobs, and services to the homeless, by empowering them to become and remain self-reliant.

Go Orange, NYC!

orange0908.jpg

Larry's live at Billy's Bakery for the launch of the NYC Go Orange Campaign which starts today September 8 through December 31.

Between now and the end of the year some 300 partners will have joined WPIX and Billy's Bakery to Go Orange to raise food, funds and awareness for hunger-relief. Orange is the color of hunger awareness. The focus will be on hunger in New York City and what New Yorkers can do to help other New Yorkers. About 1.3 million New Yorkers depend on the Food Bank.

Half of all New York City residents are struggling to put food on the table and one child in five must rely on a soup kitchen or food pantry to survive. Despite the fact that the Food Bank distributed 60 million pounds of food last year, we can't keep up with the demand. Never before in our history (and we've been around for 26 years) have we seen so many New Yorkers struggling to feed their families. From seniors, children and the working poor to the increasing number of city residents who are facing unemployment - the recession has been unforgiving. And in many respects, we expect the situation to be worse in 2010.

Astoria's Sac's Place Celebrates 20 Years By Returning Menu To Original Prices

sacsplace0703.jpg

Sac’s Place, Astoria’s landmark Italian restaurant and coal oven pizzeria, celebrated its 20th anniversary tonight during a reception attended by dozens of “regulars” and local civic and community leaders. During the event, owners Anthony and Domenico Sacramone announced that all menu items and pizzas will return to their original 1989 prices from August 19-23 in celebration of their two-decade milestone.

Sac’s Place opened for business on August 19, 1989 and continues to offer an affordable and diverse array of Italian menu items as well as a selection of almost 100 bottles of wine. Traditional dishes like eggplant parmigiana, fried calamari, veal marsala and Mamma Sacramone’s famous homemade pastas have made Sac’s a neighborhood favorite. The 2009 Zagat Guide cited Sac’s “amazing” thin crust pizza topped with “quality” ingredients as well as its “friendly” atmosphere.

Sac’s Place isn’t just enjoyed by locals, it has catered to many celebrities like Jon Bon Jovi and director Ron Howard, who have requested their food on dozens of occasions while filming at nearby Silvercup Studios. Spice Up Your 4th Of July At Pollo Tropical

pollo.jpg

The key to a good barbeque is in the sauce! Pollo Tropical turns up the Caribbean sizzle with two delicious sauces that will make you think you are in the islands. The two sauces - Guava BBQ and Pineapple Rum - were created especially to complement Pollo Tropical's famous Caribbean Ribs. Larry's at Pollo Tropical cooking with Chef Daniel Lessem.

The Guava Barbecue Sauce mixes the sweet and tangy taste of the guava fruit, with the smoked flavors of a barbecue sauce, making it a favorite among Pollo Tropical customers.

The Pineapple Rum Sauce mixes the special flavors of pineapple and rum into a spicy, striking sauce that adds just the right amount of zest to the ribs and bring out the natural flavors of the ribs.

These sauces can be enjoyed with Pollo Tropical's ribs alone, or to accompany Pollo Tropical's Chicken and Ribs Meal. The Chicken and Ribs Meal includes a quarter chicken and a quarter rack of pork ribs, plus two sides and it is available at all Pollo Tropical locations.

Preview of 2009 NYC Marines Mess Night Dinner

marine0618.jpg

Larry's getting a preview of the 2009 NYC Marines Mess Night Dinner, a military-civilian fundraiser that has been a Marine Corps tradition since the 1500s that few civilians ever experience. He's at Parlor Steakhouse, located at 1600 3rd Avenue at 90th Street.

"Mess Nights" encompass a cocktail hour, an opulent feast, and a range of $1-and-up fines for violating guidelines of the mess, which all guests are informed of at the onset (chewing gum, swearing and discussing politics, shop, money or religion among them). All fines are donated to the featured charities.

Mess Night '09 is a recreation of a mess night held Saturday, the March 20, 1920 at Oddenino's Imperial Restaurant on London's Regent Street. That dinner featured such classic dishes as "Poule au Pot Alexandra" and the famous "Culotte de Bœuf Imperial." It was attended by Sir Winston Churchill, a veteran of the division with which he had fought in World War I and which was honored at the dinner.

Oddenino's Imperial Restaurant operated for almost 50 years as one of London's "poshest" restaurants. Green tea cocktails created by Ito-En, the distinguished Japanese company, will add a contemporary libation.

With ever-present police patrols in the formerly high-traffic area for drugs, prostitution and violent activity, residents have noticed significant progress in public safety. In addition to deterring the drug trade, new apprenticeships are also making Terrace Avenue a better place to live.

- Ask the merchant what they have that is exciting and off the beaten path

- Describe a type of wine you like and a price range and ask them to suggest something good that you've probably never tasted before

- Try to go to stores that offer wine tasting so you can try before you buy!

How Would You Handle The Nation's Debt?

debt1021.jpg

Ben Bernake just offered his take on fixing the economy, with includes “significant economic stimulus.” President Bush is planning another economic summit to try to craft policies to stop the free fall. But politicians and economists alike are throwing around a lot of catch-phrases but little meaning.

We are going to ask our viewers what they think needs to be done to fix the economy, or at least fix their family finances. We will also get their best money saving secret to help other viewers increase their bottom line.

Larry is going to be outside the National Debt Clock at 6th Ave and 44th Street asking passersby: “How would you fix the economy?”

Larry's Principal For A Day In Queens

Nearly 700 New York City business and civic leaders will officially launch PENCIL partnerships with more than 600 public schools throughout all five boroughs on PENCIL's 14th Annual "Principal For A Day." Larry joins the illustrious group as he helps kicks off the Principal For A Day program at PS 268 in Jamaica, NY to get the real scoop on what goes on in your kids' classroom

The relationship between business and school is a substantive one. Merrill Lynch and PENCIL have been partnered since 2006 to provide students with career awareness opportunity, and to help them feel less sheltered in their Jamaica, Queens community.

So far, they've organized a College Day and a Career Day, led a financial workshop for students based on Merrill Lynch’s “Investing Pays Off” curriculum and hosted students at Merrill Lynch’s offices and the WTC site.

Today, Tonia Bottoms of Merrill Lynch and Michael Haberman of PENCIL are at PS 268 in Jamaica, NY. The school's principal is Lissa Stewart.

For more information and if your company would like to participate in this program, visit www.pencil.org.
