Free Asthma Screenings In NYC

asthma0512.jpg

New York-area allergists will help adults and children learn if they are at risk for asthma or exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) as the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) conducts its 15th annual Nationwide Asthma Screening Program.

Asthma affects more than 24 million Americans and EIB affects about 10 percent of the general population. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people who suffer from EIB do have some form of asthma.

Free screenings will be held at the following locations:

• May 5, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Kissena Park, bounded by Oak Avenue, Hemstead Turnpike, Kissena Boulevard and Fresh Meadow Lane, Queens
• May 14, 9 a.m. to noon, Lawrence Hospital Center, First Floor Conference Room, 55 Palmer Ave., Bronxville
• May 14, noon to 2 p.m., Whole Foods, 471 New Jersey 35, Red Bank, N.J.
• May 15, noon to 5 p.m., Roosevelt Field Mall, 630 Old Country Road, Garden City
• May 19, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Nassau University Medical Center, Auditorium, 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow
• May 22, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Albanian Islamic Cultural Center, 307 Victory Blvd., Staten Island
• May 25, NYU Langone Medical Center Lobby, 550 First Ave.
• May 26, noon to 3 p.m., Weill Cornell Medical Center, Third Floor, 505 E. 70th St.

For a list of New York-area screenings, call toll-free 866-99-ASTHMA.

The national program, which launches in May during National Asthma Awareness Month, offers free screenings at more than 200 locations across the country for people who experience symptoms – such as wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath – that occur frequently, during exercise or at night.
