How To Cope With Alcoholism And Addiction

al03129.jpg

Sukanya Krishnan talks with Laurie Dhue about her personal story and they are joined by Joe Schrank, CEO of the Core Company, a post-rehab sober living house in Brooklyn (the first one of its kind in NYC) and Chairman of the Board of the National Youth Recovery Foundation, a nonprofit dedicating to helping families in crisis, specifically, providing education, support and treatment to adolescent addicts and their parents.

From texting to video games to the more serious drugs and sex, teens are not immuned from addiction. Joe also discussed how to recognize the warning signs and how to get them help. He talked to us about co-founding a new website thefix.com, which is also geared toward helping sufferers on their road to recovery.

I saw this morning's broadcast and I have to say that I was quite impressed by laurie dhue and her admission to being an alcoholic and being sober for 4 years. I have been a pix 11 morning news watcher since the begining and today was a moving telecast as I watched a beautiful news anchorwoman new on the scene allow herself to become vulnerable and at the same time highly courageous in allowing the watchers into her personal life as she described her battle with alcohol abuse. Although I myself have never had issues with alcohol, I feel that we all have our own obstacles but for some we are isolated, afraid and are unable to be open up about them. Laurie has demonstrated that taking a risk can allow for the release of agonizing pain and the begining of closure. I look forward to watching laurie every morning and will continue to be a loyal watcher of pix 11 morning news as always.

Important to know, thank you so much for always airing quality information. I would like to know if addiction can take its shape through video games. My stepson is 12 years old and wants nothing more to do than play his xbox or PS games. My husband and I have to daily remind him to get his homework done, his chores, his bath, clean up in his room, come and eat... We have taken the consoles away (but on weekends he's with his mom, she has the same consoles but doesn't monitor his time on them) and though he does get angry, he then goes on to physical activities - flashing his game swords, martial arts jumps and leaps, and when he hugs us, his shows of affection physically hurt. He can't seem to get the games out of his system as he projects he's still on game mode. I would love to hear what specific help is available. Thank you.

Hello just want to say good luck to Chris he was awesome. In any event I am a visually impaired 42 year old man and take all kinds of medication and struggle everyday with issues.however I have been a loyal viewer of pic for years and was not happy with all the changes throughout the years on the other hand change brought Laurie dhue to pic that's awesome and Jim walking rocks too. Therefore no matter what choice the station goes with its still great. I am relocating 2 hours south in nj and hope I still get pic in the am.. thanks. Irv
