They say 3,500 is the magic number! This is how many calories you need to cut (or burn) to lose a pound. Shape Nutrition Editor Juno DeMelo was here with ways to cut 100, 250, and 500+ calories from your diet. Here are some tricks that we can share that are easy and will make all the difference:
Save 100+ calories
• Add the olive oil last. We often think of sautéing as a lowfat cooking method, but some vegetables, such as eggplant, mushrooms, and greens, tend to soak up the majority of the fat that’s added to the pan. Try steaming your veggies instead, then tossing them with a few teaspoons of extra-virgin olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, and a pinch of red pepper flakes and sea salt.

FDA announced Wednesday that the agency intends to remove certain unapproved prescription medicines intended to relieve cough, cold, and allergy symptoms from the U.S. market.
These products have not been evaluated by FDA to assure that they are safe, effective, and of good quality. These products may therefore pose unnecessary risk to consumers, especially when there are other products available for treatment of cough, cold, and allergy symptoms, including FDA-approved prescription drugs or over-the-counter drugs that follow appropriate FDA standards.
FDA officials say they have numerous concerns about these products: some may have potentially risky combinations of ingredients, while others—marketed as “timed-release”—may release active ingredients too slowly, too quickly, or inconsistently. FDA has also received reports that some of the products have names that look or sound similar to other products—a problem that could contribute to medication errors.

It’s true - there aren’t many old-school mom-and-pop shops left, but NYC’s Cowit Furs has managed to survive more than 75 years in the fur matching business. If you haven’t heard of the art and business of fur matching, the three generations of Cowits say it’s simple, they take old furs and make them look new. But in the last year, their business has been all about remodeling – taking grandma’s fur and cutting and shaping it into new fashionable styles, including fur vests, stoles, and hats.
Larry Cowit is half the remaining duo, “There used to be close to a hundred fur matchers in the country and now there’s only 1, and that’s us.” Larry’s brother Steve says right now, fur is hot, partly because it’s been so cold. It’s dripping off the collars and cuffs of more and more luxury labels this year than ever before. And you can thank China for it’s rising price, customers there are buying 70% of furs worldwide. Larry says fur is flying off racks in Russia too, “The last two years in both of those countries…demand is out of control. They literally sell out.”

Barbara Allen, the author of Front Toward Enemy, gives her account into the alledged cover-up of her husband.
Just four days into his deployment in Iraq, June 7, 2005, Lt. Louis Allen, husband and father of four young boys is killed, alongside his commander and friend Captain Phillip Esposito by 700 steel ball bearings erupting from a clay mine fastened to the window frame outside their military headquarters as they were unwinding from a long day of combat .
The killer was a fellow American soldier, Staff Sgt. Alberto Martinez, a disgruntled supply Sgt, who had previously been removed from his duties by Allen and Esposito for, among other infractions, unlawful disposition of United States Government property to the Iraqis. What happens next is unbelievable and a frightening miscarriage of justice.
In this new book by his widow, Ms. Allen exposes what she says is a military cover up and blatant failure of our military justice system. Sgt. Martinez is arrested, charged with two counts of premeditated murder. He pleads quilty, goes to trial and is acquitted! He is a free man! Ms. Allen claims the military is trying to keep this case under wraps and has denied her husband The Purple Heart.

Food Allergies: Keeping Kids Safe At School

Moms and dads know it’s so hard to send your kid off to school for the first time, but it’s even harder when you know your son or daughter has food allergies, and you may no longer have control over what they eat or they’re are exposed to.
For a food-allergic kid, the cafeteria could be the most dangerous place on the planet. Even if your child has no food allergies, parents need to know that in 2011, at least one kid in your son or daughter’s class probably has them. PIX 11 spoke to experts, moms, and two different schools, one public, one private.
At the Allen Stevenson School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, you’ll find fish, veggies, and snacks, but you won’t find any nuts – at all – and no peanut butter. Susan Ettess, is the Head of the Lower School, " Peanut butter was a problem, because boys would try to take it out of the lunchroom, they could get it on their sleeves, go to the bathroom, use the sink and the next boy that could come in there could have an allergy. And in the kitchen, Nutritional Director Marla Mathew has a quick way to easily eyeball who’s allergic to what - she has pictures of the children who suffer from food allergies up in the kitchen with the names of their allergens written next to them, "We all work together to make sure that the safety net is there on a daily basis." At Jefferson Primary School, in Huntington, Long Island, a guide in the cafeteria makes it clear what foods could hurt a food-allergic student.

Viewers have been writing in questions about food allergies and our Dr. Steve answered three of them.
1. My son is 14 now. He has had food allergy(all dairy) all his life. Can you tell me if goat milk has the protein that regular milk has. Also will he ever out grow his any of his allergies? (milk, eggs, cheese, etc.)
2. Can a vegetarian diet while pregnant increase the risk of your child having food allergies? I have terrible guilt for giving my son allergies and I feel like it's due to me avoiding meat and milk while i was pregnant. He's 16 months old and allergic to milk, soy, eggs, peanuts, sesame and we suspect a meat, fish, bean and tomato allergy which he is currently being tested for.
3. I have two questions. Is it possible that my son’s ku/l numbers have risen over the years because he was exposed to cashews and is there any way of knowing how severe his next reaction will be if he is exposed to nuts again.

He signed up for the film project with the intent of hitting the big screen in a role that is as far from his life as a musician, hoping to show audiences another layer of Ne-Yo. However, you're going to have to catch him theaters to see just how he did.

Tom Shadyac brought us such movies like "Ace Ventura", "Liar, Liar" and "Bruce Almighty" - but his latest flick "I AM" is a departure for the Hollywood hit maker.
I AM, a prismatic and probing exploration of our world, what's wrong with it, and what we can do to make it better, represents Tom Shadyac's first foray into non-fiction following a career as one of Hollywood's leading comedy practitioners, with such successful titles as "Ace Ventura," "Liar Liar," and "Bruce Almighty" to his credit.
I AM recounts what happened to the filmmaker after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged a changed man. Disillusioned with life on the A-list, he sold his house, moved to a mobile home community, and decided to start life anew.
All proceeds derived from the release of I AM, in all media, will go to THE FOUNDATION FOR I AM, a not-for-profit established by Shadyac to fund various worthy causes and to educate the next generation about the very issues and problems explored in the film.

Today, I had the chance to meet an extraordinary Irishwoman who does it all. Her name is Eileen Mannion Collum. She's 43, has two boys and three girls, takes them to church every Sunday, and runs a restaurant called "Eileen's Country Kitchen" in Yonkers. She also competes in the New York City Triathalon every year, learning how to swim, at 39 years of age.
She grew up in a small town in Galway, Ireland, and milked cows as a child. Her desire to come to America was realized in 1987 when there was a wave of emigration and her cousin sent her the money for a ticket. Since then, she says, she "never looked back." She said she realized the "opportunity to work," and says "the American people are really nice people - this neighborhood really supports us."
Her customers sing her praises, and say everything Eileen does - from serving up a big Irish breakfast all day long, to taking extra care with older patrons - makes her one-of-a-kind.
Her marriage is part romance, part business partnership. Married for 21 years, Eileen's husband (who's currently in Ireland visiting his mom) "buys the food, and (sic) she cooks it." Her regular customers come in daily around 10 am and give her support, "always say something nice," and appreciate her. At the end of the day, Eileen says "We work hard, but it's easy because we love what we do."

Does your company or organization play The Blame Game?
For better or for worse, the dynamics of credit and blame are at the heart of every team and organization and make or break every career. Unfortunately, credit and blame are rarely assigned in an objective or fair manner, and individual psychology, team dynamics, and corporate culture all influence, and are influenced by, how credit and blame are given and received.
Too often, people and organizations get caught up in "the blame game" and the wrong people get blamed for the wrong reasons at the wrong time. The result can be that people are demotivated and demoralized, focus more on organizational politics than on getting the job done, and are too afraid to speak up or experiment with new approaches.
Ben Dattner, the author of The Blame Game was here to explain more. For more information, visit www.creditandblame.com.
