Dogs Rescued From LI Horror House Up For Adoption

dogs0121.jpg

It was a story that tugged at our heart strings. More than a dozen dogs rescued from a house of horrors on Long Island. Hempstead Animal Control officers pulled 17 abused and neglected dogs from a home in Rockville Center last week.

They were in pretty bad shape and rushed to the Hempstead Animal Shelter where they've been getting around the clock care. The dogs look a lot different now thay they've gotten some much needed TLC.

Kate Murray, Hempstead Town Supervisor, told us how we can adopt these dogs and give them a proper home.

For more information on adoption you can log onto the Town of Hempstead website at www.toh.li or you can call (516) 489-6000

The next time you interview Kate Murray, ask her why she needs to have a $3 million dollar payroll to take care of no more than 300 animals at the Hempstead Animal shelter.

That comes to $10,000 in labor cost per year (or $27 per day per animal). Total cost to take care of an animal is over $23,000 per animal per year (or $64/day per animal). The total budget for the shelter is over $7 million dollars.

Also ask her why they spend $50,000/year on gasoline (if gas is $3.00/gal and their vehicles get 10 mi/gal, that means they drive over 166,000 miles per year or 450 miles/day)
