Nia Vardalos Talks About National Adoption Day

nia1117.jpg

Actress Nia Vardalos as here to talk about National Adoption Day. Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and her husband, Cougar Town star Ian Gomez, adopted a five-year-old girl from foster care in November 2008 after 10 years of struggling with infertility.

National Adoption Day is Saturday November 20th and, since 2000, the initiative has helped more than 30,000 foster care children find permanent, loving families on one day.

Sadly, once celebrations and court proceedings are over on November 20th, there are still more than 114,000 children legally free for adoption in the U.S. Foster care adoption is free, the average length to process an adoption is around 12 months and varies by case and a child cannot be removed from his/her adoptive family once they are legally adopted.

These are truths associated with some of the "myths" the general public negatively associates with foster care adoption, which Vardalos "debunked" while speaking with us.

Thank you so much, Nia! I had tears hearing you speak about how easy it is to adopt and foster in America. I have been trying to find out how to go about this for a while but confused. Now, I have good reputable information. Dreams will come true!

Hi! I was very touched by hearing Nia talk about adopting her daughter after 10 years of trying to have a child. During the interview Nia mentioned a website that we can get some additional information from but when I googled it, it was for CA residents. Is there a website where I can find information on fostering to adopt in NY? Thanks!

I had the same problem as other people I went to the website that Nia mentioned, and it was for California. Anything for NY
