Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV

New York Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV met with PIX Morning News back in April to announce he will run against longtime congressman Charles Rangel in the upcoming House of Representatives race. But circumstances have changed completely now that Rangel’s embroiled in violations and an impending ethics trial. Powell sat down with PIX again this morning to discuss these new developments and the primary race in September.
The son of congressman and civil rights leader Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Powell IV has been involved with New York government since 1992, when he represented East Harlem as a New York City Council Member until 1997. He’s served a state assemblyman for the past 10 years representing Harlem and East Harlem. Powell IV made an unsuccessful bid for Rangel’s Congress seat in 1994. Rangel originally won that office in 1970 when he beat Powell IV’s father in the Congressional race.
The primary race will take place on September 14.
