Afton C. Williamson Replaces Kerry Washington in Broadway Play "RACE"

Actress Afton C. Williamson came to the PIX Morning today to speak with us about her new role in the Broadway show "RACE" directed by David Mamet. She replaced actress Kerry Washington and in the role of Susan, and made her debut in "RACE" on June 15th at the Ethel Barrymore Theater.

Williamson spoke about how she made it to the top in her Broadway play and her experiences. She was originally Washington's understudy and took over the roll after her great performances.

Mamet describes the play as,“"A firm made up of three lawyers, two black and one white, that are offered the chance to defend a white man charged with a crime against a black young woman. It is a play about lies." He adds: "All drama is about lies. When the lie is exposed, the play is over."

Afton has always wanted to be an aactress and has watched soap operas and plays since she was a three-year-old. During her acting career, she has played in several other theatrical plays including "I Have Before Me A Remarkable Document Given To Me By A Young Lady From Rwanda" (Vermont Stage Company), "Crowns," "The Beaux Stratagem," "Cymbeline," "Romeo and Juliet," "The Count of Monte Cristo," "Dr. Faustus," "Death of a Salesman," "James and the Giant Peach" and "Richard III."

Williamson, 25, is a native of Toledo, Ohio. She is a graduate of the Eastern Michigan University and she received her M.F.A. from the University of Alabama.
