The Nine Rooms of Happiness

bedroom0305.jpg

All too often, women fear their momentary mistakes rather than reveling in their episodes of excellence. The number of mistakes adds up, gathering mass and force to shake the foundations of even the happiest life. Unfortunately, this is the way many women think about everything—their love lives, their bank accounts, their family life, their career, and their body image.

Lucy Danziger, editor in chief of Self, and Catherine Birndorf, a psychiatrist and expert on women’s mental health issues, have teamed up to figure out why it’s all too common for women to be thrown off balance if things are going well in all areas of life except for one.

In their new book, THE NINE ROOMS OF HAPPINESS: Loving Yourself, Finding Your Purpose, and Getting Over Life’s Little Imperfections, they use the simple metaphor of a house to illustrate the central problem: when women should be grateful for what they have in their lives in the room at hand, they are either seeing the room’s imperfections or, worse, worrying about another room. The book takes women through different parts of their lives (homes), helps them understand their patterns, and gives them new ways of thinking to solve their own problems.

Perky Jerky

Perky%20JerkyWEB.jpg

Brian Levin, Co-Founder of Perky Jerky, stopped by the studio this morning. Two years ago Levin was skiing in Colorado with his friend Matt Keiser when inspiration struck. Heading up the mountain on a lift for another run, Levin grabbed his bag and realized a spill on their last descent caused two cans of RedBull to explode all over their mountain top snack - beef jerky. With nothing else to eat and a need for some energy, they ate the soaked jerky and immediately realized that their poor packing skills kicked off the idea to create a great new product.

Two months ago, after a few years of R&D, Matt and Brian launched Perky Jerky the worlds first energy beef jerky. Though it's only been on the shelves for a short amount of time, it's already found thousands of fans, has shown up in the X-Games and at Sundance and is quickly finding tremendous cult following amongst athletes looking for energy AND protein in a snack without all the carbonation, carbs or sugar.

Perky Jerky is caffeinated beef jerky, made from 100% all natural beef, with an invigorating additive derived from Guarana , a natural energy booster with approximately twice the caffeine content of a coffee bean. For more on Perky Jerky log onto http://www.perkyjerky.com/home.php

St. Patrick's Day Revealed

irish0317.jpg

You've heard the story about the man, now let's get to the bottom of the day we set aside to celebrate St. Patrick, the day where EVERYONE is Irish.

Ask any reveler - St. Patrick's Day is all about a spectacular parade followed by hours of drinking and debauchery. That's true of all major US cities, and that's no surprise. There are more Americans of Irish origin than their are Irish in Ireland. That means 36,278,332 Americans — over 11.9% of total population—reported some Irish ancestry . To put that into perspective.... that's NINE TIMES the population of Ireland.

It seems like New York it the center of Irish-American culture - but that's not exactly the case. While it's true we have the largest NUMBER of residents claiming Irish heritage, the greatest concetration of Irish-Americans can be found in Massachusetts, where 23% of residents are of Irish decent. New Hampshire comes in second (20%) while Rhode Island is a close third with 18%.

St. Patrick (The Real Story)

stpatrick0317.jpg

Have you heard the stories about St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland? Well, that's all Blarney! Here's the REAL story:

St. Patrick wasn't a born and bred Irishman - in fact, baby Maewyn Succat was born to a wealthy PAGAN family in Britian and the end of the fourth century. His father was considered a Christian Deacon, a title he took on strictly for the purpose of tax breaks.

Have A Cornbeef Cuban Sandwich At NJ's Azucar

sandwich0317.jpg

Azucar's chef Nick Vasquez won Throwdown with Bobby Flay in last week's episode. He's here to show us his signature Cornbeef Cuban sandwich with an Irish twist in honor of St. Patrick's Day.

Nick made a classic Cubano sandwich, with Cuban bread pressed flat and crispy on the outside. Nick seasoned his pork shoulder with a rub consisting of garlic, oregano, cumin (a necessary spice for Cuban cooking giving it an earthy texture and aroma), and sour oranges. The pork marinates for an entire day.

Afterwards, Nick covered the pork in salt, which keeps the moisture in the pork while cooking it for 5 to 6 hours at 350 degrees. The salt peels off in a layer when done. Nick used layers of Virginia ham and park, with thin slices of long Kosher pickles and mayonnaise for his dressing. The sandwich was then pressed in a sandwich press (plancha) until the cheese melts. Yum!

Azucar is located in Jersey City, NJ. For more information, visit www.azucarcubancuisine.com.

I had the chance to see Valerie Harper in her juicy, new role on Broadway last night, and the way the audience responded to her role as Tallulah Bankhead, in the new play LOOPED at the Lyceum Theatre. This morning we spoke in the greenroom here at WPIX before her interview, and she is simply a class act: fun, energetic and fabulous to be around.

If you aren't familiar with Tallulah Bankhead, here is a little background on the show if you are thinking about going to see it. I highly recommend you grab some tickets before they are all sold out!

Based on a real event, LOOPED takes place in the summer of 1965, when an inebriated Tallulah Bankhead stumbles into a sound studio to rerecord (or 'loop') one line of dialogue for her last movie --Die, Die, My Darling. Ms. Bankhead was known for her wild partying and convention-defying exploits that surpassed even today's celebrity bad girls. Given her intoxicated state and inability to loop the line properly, what ensues is an uproarious showdown between an uptight film editor, Danny Miller, and the outrageous legend.

How To Get Rid Of Your Grays

Men are just as sensitive about going gray as women but most don't know they can get rid of it in their own bathroom. Jason Backe uses similar techniques on his celeb clients like Timothy Hutton and Gabriel Byrne.

Touchback
• If you are just seeing first signs of gray and you want to conceal them for a younger look use touchback

• Touchback is the first liquid hair color in a marker and is completely mistake-proof

• Use the guiding comb underneath hair and apply the touchback marker directly to grays, let dry for a minute and then you can style and comb through hair

• TouchBack washes out with shampoo

Ezra Miller Talks About His New Movie 'City Island '

Instead of letting his wife Joyce (Julianna Margulies) know he’s taking private acting classes in Manhattan, he leaves her to think he’s having an affair. When in class Vince is asked to reveal a secret- which he does, and accidentally sets off a chaotic chain of events that turns his everyday suburban life upside down.

'Heroes' Star Greg Grunberg Shares His Son's Fight Against Epilepsy

greg0326.png

Greg Grunberg may play a "hero" on TV, but he is also a hero in real life to his son, Jake, who suffers from epilepsy. I had a chance to sit down with Grunberg, the star of NBC's Heroes, who is not only passionate about the cause, but he is determined and dedicated to the fight against epilepsy because his oldest son was diagnosed at the age of 7.

Greg and his family are like the millions of other families who have learned a lot about the challenges of the condition, and they continue to work with Jake's doctors to find a treatment plan that will manage his seizures.

Greg and his family went to Washington, D-C to make a presentation at a Congressional hearing about the importance of maintaining dialogue with a doctor to help manager the condition.

Greg is also participating in Epilepsy Foundation's 4th Anuual National Walk for Epilepsy on March 27 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Greg will provide live updates about the walk on Twitter @greggrunberg.

Grunberg created the website www.talkaboutit.org, which is geared towards raising awareness about epilepsy and has a social networking component for visitors. For more on the cause go to www.TalkAboutIt.org.

Be sure to catch Heroes on NBC.

It's Man 'Hunting Season'! Find A Mate By Using Deer Hunting Rules

huntin0329.jpg

Hunting Season: A Field Guide For Targeting and Capturing the Perfect Man is a dating guide that applies the rules of deer hunting (a hobby of author Elle) to helping women land their perfect buck (aka man)! Some of her tips include:

• Define your goal before the season opens (April 1st- September 31st): Are you Trophy Hunting (dating with the goal of a committed relationship) or do you want to Bag ‘n Tag (commitment-free dating)? Your strategies will be different depending on your goal.
• Never hunt with a posse: It’s no fun sharing a kill.
• Stick to your Kill Zone (established hunting areas): No hunter can control a lone buck’s movements. If he wanders away from your zone, let him roam, and wait for the next.
• The Off Season (October 1st - March 31st) is for hibernation, emotional healing, and gun polishing. Elle doesn’t hunt then, and neither should you.

Elle also discussed the Hunting Gear every woman needs in her closet or the Seven Deadly Sins of Hunting (such as Never Hunt Another Hunter's Buck or Never Drink to Excess

Hunting Season: A Field Guide For Targeting and Capturing the Perfect Man is available in stores now.

Hop On A Jamba Juice Fender Blender Bike To Make Your Own Drink

jamba0331.jpg

Twenty years ago Jamba Juice turned ordinary fruit into something extraordinary - the smoothie! Today, the Jamba blender is doing the same for a rather traditional (sometimes stiff) beverage – tea. Jamba Juice is putting a new spin on tea with it’s Hot Blends – a line of organic tea lattes and hot chocolate, all mixed to perfection in Jamba’s high speed blenders!

To celebrate the launch of the delicious Hot Blends, Jamba conducted a six-city, multi-week Hot Blend Spin Tour that made it's final stop in New York’s Time Square today! Jamba Juice will encourage New Yorkers to hop on one of its 15 Fender Blender Bikes--stationary bikes equipped with the same blender and blade used inside Jamba stores — and blend up their own Spiced Chai Tea latte, using just the power of their own pedaling. The reward? A tasty, organic, smooth chai latte blended to perfection— and on the house!

Our Ojinika Obiekwe joined Bananaman – Jamba Juice’s very own “Jambassador” in the PIX PLAZA to blend up beverages for us.
