Recovered Goods Up For Sale In 'Property Room'

prop0121.jpg

Our Lisa Mateo visited the Property Room of Long Island.

Property Room is an online auction marketplace that works in conjunction with police agencies around the country (including New York) - 1,600 and counting.

At any given time, somewhere in America, a thief is stealing valuables. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were 13 million thefts of property during 2005 alone. What's more, property crimes account for nearly 75 percent of all crime committed in the country. Of those burglaries, 84 percent of the time the offender gained entrance into the victim's home or other building. While much of that merchandise finds its way back to the original owner, quite a bit of it never does. And because of this, consumers can bargain shop for the recovered merchandise through a company called PropertyRoom.com.

The site has so many interesting things from electronics, jewelry, designer fashions, power tools, cars, land, recreational supplies and the list goes on. Founded in 1999 by Tom Lane, a retired NY detective who's mission was to help law enforcement agencies solve the problem of what to do with recovered goods. There are some businesses that are thriving during a recession; as consumers are looking for ways to save money on just about everything.
