CDC Puts Out 'Extreme Cold' Guidebook
It's pretty cold outside lately and now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants to help you stay warm and safe this winter.
They've put out an Extreme Cold Prevention Guide that has the usual "obvious" tips like dressing in layers and how to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
But it also has some valuable information on planning ahead such as putting together an emergency supply list and a winter survival kit, and how to heat your home safely to prevent fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. There's even information on how to prepare your car for the cold weather and what to do if you get stranded.

Get into the "swing" of a new fitness routine with Airopes! Sandra Partyka, senior fitness assistant at Smart Workout, was here with details.
Smart Workout's Airopes class is a total body workout: cardio, resistance, agility and balance. Airopes have the handles of a jump rope, with weights attached, without the full length of a connecting rope.
This enables the aerobic benefits of a jump rope, while avoiding the harsh impact of continuous jumping, and permits incorporating a unique array of cardio moves. The swing resistance provides a continuous upper body workout, even while performing traditional lower body moves.
Partyka demonstrated these moves:
• The Basic Swing - Strengthens forearms and biceps
• Arms Up - Works shoulders and adds aerobics to routine
• Arms Out - Strengthens deltoids and latissimus dorsi
• Lunges - Work the quads and gluteus maximus

Celebrated actor, director and screenwriter Alan Alda stopped by PIX studios to talk about hosting the new three-part PBS series The Human Spark. PBS says of their new Wednesday series:
After some 3.5 billion years of life’s evolution on this planet – and after almost 2 million years since people recognizable as human first walked its surface – a new human burst upon the scene, apparently unannounced. It was us.Until then our ancestors had shared the planet with other human species. But soon there was only us, possessors of something that gave us unprecedented power over our environment and everything else alive. That something was – is – the Human Spark.
What is the nature of human uniqueness? Where did the Human Spark ignite, and when? And perhaps most tantalizingly, why? Alan Alda takes these questions personally, visiting with dozens of scientists on three continents, and participating directly in many experiments – including the detailed examination of his own brain.
Emmy-award winning Alda is most widely hailed for his role as "Hawkeye Pierce" in the television series M*A*S*H. He has since then been a regular cast member on The West Wing and was in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning The Aviator, among other renowned projects.
The Human Spark airs Wednesdays, January 6, 13, and 20 at 8pm on PBS. For more information, visit pbs.org/humanspark.

Are you taking extra good care of your laptop? If it’s not performing to its abilities, chances are you've been slacking off. Ross Lacy from Laptop MD is here with a few pointers to ensure the health of laptop.
• Don't Drink and Drive
If you have liquids near your laptop, you increase the chances of a spill. Always keep beverages a good arms-length away from any computer equipment.
• Give Your Email a Work-out
Pick a day each month (perhaps your day of birth) to review your emails and file, archive or delete the messages that are more than two months old. If this is too tedious, you can automate the archiving process in a relatively painless way. In Outlook, click 'File' and then 'Archive' to set the configuration. Archiving helps keep your PST file (which stands for "Personal Information Store" and contains all your outlook data) under two Gigabytes. If your PST file grows too large, it can cause Outlook to slow down considerably and even make it crash. So, give your email a monthly work-out and reduce it.

Our Lisa Mateo visited the Property Room of Long Island.
Property Room is an online auction marketplace that works in conjunction with police agencies around the country (including New York) - 1,600 and counting.
At any given time, somewhere in America, a thief is stealing valuables. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were 13 million thefts of property during 2005 alone. What's more, property crimes account for nearly 75 percent of all crime committed in the country. Of those burglaries, 84 percent of the time the offender gained entrance into the victim's home or other building. While much of that merchandise finds its way back to the original owner, quite a bit of it never does. And because of this, consumers can bargain shop for the recovered merchandise through a company called PropertyRoom.com.
The site has so many interesting things from electronics, jewelry, designer fashions, power tools, cars, land, recreational supplies and the list goes on. Founded in 1999 by Tom Lane, a retired NY detective who's mission was to help law enforcement agencies solve the problem of what to do with recovered goods. There are some businesses that are thriving during a recession; as consumers are looking for ways to save money on just about everything.
For more information, visit PropertyRoom.com.

Councilman Jumaane Williams Talks About Haitian Relief Efforts

It was two weeks ago today that a 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Haiti and changed the lives of millions in an instant. City Councilman Jumaane Williams was here to talk about the devastation that was also felt here directly and indirectly in the New York Haitian community.
Working with the City's Office of Payroll Administration, the Council and the Mayor new citywide payroll deduction program will begin on the paychecks and direct deposits on February 5, 2010.
All City employees who wish to participate can elect to donate a specified amount of money from each paycheck earmarked to further Haitian Relief Efforts in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. These tax-deductible deductions will run for two months spread over four pay periods. There are 300,000 City employees. If each one of them earmarked just $1 per paycheck for the four pay periods for Haiti, we would raise $1.2 million for the relief effort just from this simple program alone.
City Employees can participate by visiting the action center on the City Council home page at http://council.nyc.gov and find a link for the NYC Payroll Deduction Program for Haitian Relief Effort.

I mean we don’t even live in the same city so where’s our baby going to live? We have to figure that out very soon," said Giuliana in a recent interview.
Marriage and reality TV didn't work out for Jon and Kate, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, or Hulk Hogan and his former wife. But Guliana and Bill are here to show us that it can work, if you want it to and these two want it to.

Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott, Oxygen Network’s husband and wife reality TV team, came on the show today to help solve a great debate: should your toilet paper be rolled over or under?
It's called the Cottonelle Roll Poll and the duo is recruiting people to take sides with Tori on Team Over or Dean on Team Under. The couple came on the set, with their reality TV crew in tow, and tested their method in a sudden death race.
WPIX intern TC McCarthy and freelancer Jeremy Tanner stood perfectly still as they were mummified in Cottonelle 2 ply. Spelling wrapped with her TP rolled 'over' and McDermott with his 'under'. Today's event serves as a preview for this afternoon's kick off of the Cottonelle Great Debate at Times Square studios from 3pm to 6pm.
The debate is being held in honor of Thomas Crapper, a 19th century plumber who is often falsely credited with the invention of the flush toilet. While he was not the inventor (John Harrington was), he did actively promote its widespread use (and no, his name is in no way connected with the euphamism used today).
Spelling and McDermott are the stars of Oxygen's Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, a reality show about the couple's perils in balancing parenthood, stardom and romance in Tinseltown. New episodes air later in the spring.
