CDC Puts Out 'Extreme Cold' Guidebook

extreme_cold_guide%5B1%5D.jpg

It's pretty cold outside lately and now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants to help you stay warm and safe this winter.

They've put out an Extreme Cold Prevention Guide that has the usual "obvious" tips like dressing in layers and how to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

But it also has some valuable information on planning ahead such as putting together an emergency supply list and a winter survival kit, and how to heat your home safely to prevent fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. There's even information on how to prepare your car for the cold weather and what to do if you get stranded.

Wake-Up Workout: Jump To Fitness With Airopes

airopes0104.jpg

Get into the "swing" of a new fitness routine with Airopes! Sandra Partyka, senior fitness assistant at Smart Workout, was here with details.

Smart Workout's Airopes class is a total body workout: cardio, resistance, agility and balance. Airopes have the handles of a jump rope, with weights attached, without the full length of a connecting rope.

This enables the aerobic benefits of a jump rope, while avoiding the harsh impact of continuous jumping, and permits incorporating a unique array of cardio moves. The swing resistance provides a continuous upper body workout, even while performing traditional lower body moves.

Partyka demonstrated these moves:
The Basic Swing - Strengthens forearms and biceps
Arms Up - Works shoulders and adds aerobics to routine
Arms Out - Strengthens deltoids and latissimus dorsi
Lunges - Work the quads and gluteus maximus

For more on Airopes and other fitness classes offered at Smart Workout, visit www.smartworkout.net.

Alan Alda Searches For 'The Human Spark' On PBS

alan0104.jpg

Celebrated actor, director and screenwriter Alan Alda stopped by PIX studios to talk about hosting the new three-part PBS series The Human Spark. PBS says of their new Wednesday series:

After some 3.5 billion years of life’s evolution on this planet – and after almost 2 million years since people recognizable as human first walked its surface – a new human burst upon the scene, apparently unannounced. It was us.

Until then our ancestors had shared the planet with other human species. But soon there was only us, possessors of something that gave us unprecedented power over our environment and everything else alive. That something was – is – the Human Spark.

What is the nature of human uniqueness? Where did the Human Spark ignite, and when? And perhaps most tantalizingly, why? Alan Alda takes these questions personally, visiting with dozens of scientists on three continents, and participating directly in many experiments – including the detailed examination of his own brain.

Emmy-award winning Alda is most widely hailed for his role as "Hawkeye Pierce" in the television series M*A*S*H. He has since then been a regular cast member on The West Wing and was in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning The Aviator, among other renowned projects.

The Human Spark airs Wednesdays, January 6, 13, and 20 at 8pm on PBS. For more information, visit pbs.org/humanspark.

Snooki, 21, is looking to meet Mr. Right. In fact, "when she goes to the gym, she goes in full makeup, hoping to make a splash with all the toned men. Her height has been as much of a strength as it has been an obstacle," says MTV.

'Unbroken' Sales May Go Platinum Like Katherine McPhee's Locks

kat0108.jpg

Former American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee joined the show today bringing with her some new tunes, and a fresh look.

McPhee performed "Had It All" and "Keep Drivin'," two singles from her new album Unbroken, released January 5th.

McPhee was a brunette when America noticed her on the fifth season of American Idol back in 2006. The singer/songwriter came in second place that season, and mezmerized America with her rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” RCA records snatched up the fledgling artist and she released her self-titled debut album in early 2007.

Now she’s platinum blonde and getting more personal with her music. In Unbroken, the singer flexes her vocal and lyrical muscles. McPhee co-wrote many of the songs on her album, citing her life as inspiration. She said on her myspace page, "This record is definitely more personal to me […] I have more stories to tell. It’s more of an artistic look at me as a person."

Unbroken is available in stores or on iTunes. For more information about McPhee or her music, visit www.katharinemcphee.com.

Tamra Barney of The Real Housewives of Orange County joined us this morning to set the record straight about her and her husband Simon.

Recently, Barney has been in tabloid headlines because her husband Simon Barney has filed for a divorce "citing verbal abusive and that she’s a cheater." As viewers of the show would have thought, their marriage difficulties have been shown on the current season of Bravo's hit popular series.

Barney told PIX that she and Simon only text -- not speak -- to one another after 11 years of marriage. And, since he filed for divorce she has not "sat down, slept or eaten in a week. I moved out of the house and I’m trying to settle so I don’t know what’s going on.”

On her Facebook page, she’s posted, "Thank you for everyone who understands and supports me. For the record, all accusations are false."

The Healthiest Time To Do Everything

time0115.jpg

Timing is everything, especially when it comes to your health. Proper planning can mean the difference between getting sick and staying healthy.

Consider that a flu shot offers the most protection if you get it in late October or early November, before flu season gets under way, or that a cold sore will heal 18 to 21 percent faster if you take a dose of antiviral medication as soon as you feel the first tingle.

Before you make another health move, check the these great tips from Prevention, and then consult your watch or calendar. You can't afford not to.

1. Pay bills or do a crossword between 10 and 11 AM or 8 and 9 PM
According to our circadian rhythms, that's when we're maximally alert. Try not to waste a minute—the brain boost lasts only for about an hour.

How To Keep Your Laptop Running Smoother For Longer

laptop.jpg

Are you taking extra good care of your laptop? If it’s not performing to its abilities, chances are you've been slacking off. Ross Lacy from Laptop MD is here with a few pointers to ensure the health of laptop.

• Don't Drink and Drive
If you have liquids near your laptop, you increase the chances of a spill. Always keep beverages a good arms-length away from any computer equipment.

• Give Your Email a Work-out
Pick a day each month (perhaps your day of birth) to review your emails and file, archive or delete the messages that are more than two months old. If this is too tedious, you can automate the archiving process in a relatively painless way. In Outlook, click 'File' and then 'Archive' to set the configuration. Archiving helps keep your PST file (which stands for "Personal Information Store" and contains all your outlook data) under two Gigabytes. If your PST file grows too large, it can cause Outlook to slow down considerably and even make it crash. So, give your email a monthly work-out and reduce it.

Recovered Goods Up For Sale In 'Property Room'

prop0121.jpg

Our Lisa Mateo visited the Property Room of Long Island.

Property Room is an online auction marketplace that works in conjunction with police agencies around the country (including New York) - 1,600 and counting.

At any given time, somewhere in America, a thief is stealing valuables. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were 13 million thefts of property during 2005 alone. What's more, property crimes account for nearly 75 percent of all crime committed in the country. Of those burglaries, 84 percent of the time the offender gained entrance into the victim's home or other building. While much of that merchandise finds its way back to the original owner, quite a bit of it never does. And because of this, consumers can bargain shop for the recovered merchandise through a company called PropertyRoom.com.

The site has so many interesting things from electronics, jewelry, designer fashions, power tools, cars, land, recreational supplies and the list goes on. Founded in 1999 by Tom Lane, a retired NY detective who's mission was to help law enforcement agencies solve the problem of what to do with recovered goods. There are some businesses that are thriving during a recession; as consumers are looking for ways to save money on just about everything.

5 Insurance Mistakes To Avoid

insurance0125.jpg

The Insurance Information Institute says if you avoid them you can save money and remain protected.

Mistake #1: Insuring a home for its real estate value rather than the cost of rebuilding.
Many people think when real estate prices decline so can their insurance but Insurance covers the cost of rebuilding, not the sales price. A better way to save: Raise your deductible, a change from $500 to $1,000, could save up to 25%.

Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Set For Release On Blu-Ray, DVD

this0125.jpg

They performed with the King of Pop himself and now they're here to show us why MJ had picked them for his "This Is It" tour. Choreographer Travis Payne and a few of his dancers were here to talk about the tour that would have been and the dances featured in the documentary about the tour.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment offers music lovers a backstage pass to witness the King of Pop plan and create what would have been his electrifying and triumphant return to the stage when Michael Jckson's This Is It debuts on Blu-Ray, DVD and PSP tomorrow.

Directed by Kenny Ortega, the Blu-ray and DVD release will allow fans to go beyond the theatrical experience of the film Roger Ebert called "one of the most revealing music documentaries I've seen" with the two documentaries "Staging The Return: Beyond The Show" and "Staging The Return: The Adventure Begins," in which Michael Jackson is shown developing, creating and rehearsing for his sold-out "This Is It" tour.

Councilman Jumaane Williams Talks About Haitian Relief Efforts

haiti0126.jpg

It was two weeks ago today that a 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Haiti and changed the lives of millions in an instant. City Councilman Jumaane Williams was here to talk about the devastation that was also felt here directly and indirectly in the New York Haitian community.

Working with the City's Office of Payroll Administration, the Council and the Mayor new citywide payroll deduction program will begin on the paychecks and direct deposits on February 5, 2010.

All City employees who wish to participate can elect to donate a specified amount of money from each paycheck earmarked to further Haitian Relief Efforts in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. These tax-deductible deductions will run for two months spread over four pay periods. There are 300,000 City employees. If each one of them earmarked just $1 per paycheck for the four pay periods for Haiti, we would raise $1.2 million for the relief effort just from this simple program alone.

City Employees can participate by visiting the action center on the City Council home page at http://council.nyc.gov and find a link for the NYC Payroll Deduction Program for Haitian Relief Effort.

Giuliana & Bill Rancic Talk About The Reality Of Their Life

giuliana0126.jpg

E! News anchor Giuliana DePandi Rancic and her husband, former Apprentice winner Bill Rancic joined us today, to talk about their 10-episode reality series about their marriage and long-distance relationship.

The tale of one marriage in two cities, Giuliana & Bill, returns for Season 2 and it finds the couple with one thing on their minds babies! "There’s a lot of focus on babies and when we do have a child, we need to decide where the child is going to live: the suburbs or the city. I mean we don’t even live in the same city so where’s our baby going to live? We have to figure that out very soon," said Giuliana in a recent interview.

Marriage and reality TV didn't work out for Jon and Kate, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, or Hulk Hogan and his former wife. But Guliana and Bill are here to show us that it can work, if you want it to and these two want it to.

Catch the new season of Giuliana & Bill Sundays at 9pm on MyStyle.

Tori Spelling & Dean McDermott Talk Cottonelle TP

tori0127.jpg

Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott, Oxygen Network’s husband and wife reality TV team, came on the show today to help solve a great debate: should your toilet paper be rolled over or under?

It's called the Cottonelle Roll Poll and the duo is recruiting people to take sides with Tori on Team Over or Dean on Team Under. The couple came on the set, with their reality TV crew in tow, and tested their method in a sudden death race.

WPIX intern TC McCarthy and freelancer Jeremy Tanner stood perfectly still as they were mummified in Cottonelle 2 ply. Spelling wrapped with her TP rolled 'over' and McDermott with his 'under'. Today's event serves as a preview for this afternoon's kick off of the Cottonelle Great Debate at Times Square studios from 3pm to 6pm.

The debate is being held in honor of Thomas Crapper, a 19th century plumber who is often falsely credited with the invention of the flush toilet. While he was not the inventor (John Harrington was), he did actively promote its widespread use (and no, his name is in no way connected with the euphamism used today).

Spelling and McDermott are the stars of Oxygen's Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, a reality show about the couple's perils in balancing parenthood, stardom and romance in Tinseltown. New episodes air later in the spring.

We turned to Dominick Aiello of RA Travel, Inc. to break it down for us. And since this is considered one of the slowest travel weekends of the calendar year, Dominick also shared some affordable hot spots for the season. For more travel ideas and deals, log onto www.ratravel.com
