Work Shift Disorder May Plague Those Who Work Non-Traditional Hours

sleep1002.jpg

We adjust our clocks twice a year to align our bodies with daylight hours, but what about the millions of Americans who work non-traditional hours? Sleep Specialist Dr. Michael Thorpy stopped to explain. Dr. Thorpy is a board-certified in sleep disorders medicine, is Director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.

Shift work disorder occurs when a person's internal body clock that helps regulate their sleep and wake cycle is out of sync with their work schedule.

It can lead to excessive sleepiness during waking hours or trouble sleeping during sleeping hours. Add to this the fact that with the current economy, more Americans are working more non-traditional hours than usual, and chances are that you or someone you know may be suffering from shift work disorder. The good news is that the symptoms of shift work disorder can be treated.

Wakeup Workout: Baseball-Inspired Fitness

workout1102.jpg

The Yankees are in the World Series and most New Yorkers will be spending their evenings parked on the couch cheering on the Bronx Bombers. But there's a way to combat the beer and wings, with a baseball-inspired workout created by a Crunch expert trainer.

The workout consists of baseball-specific drills to improve strength, speed and agility - just like the pros. The workout uses minimal equipment, so there's no excuse even if you can't make it to the gym. Jason Miranda of Crunch stopped by to show us four key moves.

• Baseball Swing: Begin standing holding a light medicine ball in front of you. Arms should be straight but not locked. Rotate the medicine ball to the right and then over to the left, as if you were swinging a bat. The core should be engaged the entire time to strengthen the obliques. Repeat 20 times.

In love one minute, broken up the next and then back together again! Can a relationship really work the second time around? Molly Triffin, senior editor of Cosmopolitan magazine stopped by to talk about some "rules of the repeat" to improve your odd in round two.

• Go Slow: Try to look at it as a brand-new relationship
It's hard to slam on the brakes when you're making up for lost time, but admit it or not, you've both changed and need to take time to get reacquainted.

• Be Honest With Yourself: Make sure your heart is in the right place
If you're cringing at the idea of going to another dinner party alone, you're more likely craving a quick fix for loneliness, not your ex.

5 New Cancer-Fighting Superfoods To Add To Your Diet

food1105.jpg

Having trouble eating your five to nine servings of fruit and veggies a day? This may motivate you: If we all got our daily dose, there could be 200,000 fewer deaths from cancer every year. Fortunately, you aren't limited to a lifetime of broccoli.

Sharon Liao, editor at Shape Magazine, stopped by with five fruits and veggies that offer powerful protection for your body (and they'll help fight diet boredom too!).

• Artichokes - A study showed that artichokes had the highest antioxidant capacity of 40 vegetables and herbs tested. Like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, artichokes are rich in flavonoids, which help slow the growth of breast and other types of cancer cells in lab studies.

• Swiss Chard - Swap Swiss chard for spinach and you'll get similar amounts of important antioxidants-like vitamin C, beta-carotene, and lutein-which fight cell damage and strengthen your immune system. But this dark, leafy green is less bland, so you get a flavor boost when you add it to pasta dishes, soups, and stir-fries.

Info On Public Safety In NJ Hospitals Now Available

health1109.jpg

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - For the first time, New Jersey consumers can access detailed information on patient safety at hospitals throughout the Garden State.

State health officials recently released a report that shows each hospital's patient safety performance and incidence of serious medical errors - such as operating on the wrong body part or leaving a sponge or instrument inside a patient's body.

While health care facilities had already reported preventable medical mistakes, the state had previously just published the number of errors, not the data for individual hospitals.

The new information is included the New Jersey Hospital Performance Report, published annually by the state Department of Health and Senior Services. It can be found at the department's Web site, www.nj.gov/health/hpr.

Wakeup Workout: Keep Your Body Young With Tai-Sho Daruma

wakeup1109.jpg

It's a 45-minute system of exercises that are called Tai-Sho Daruma. They are thousands of years old and they were practiced by the monks in the Buddhist temples of China, essentially, to keep there bodies young as they aged. Translate that into today, and you have something that is of great interest to the "baby boomer" crowd, who as the monks did "want to keep their bodies young as they age."

Stefan Schwarze, owner of Evolution Fitness Club, stopped by to show us a few moves. He says it helps young athletes as he practices it with local high schoolers. It's gained so much popularity that he teaches it to many international yoga groups.

'Flowers Uncut' Highlights Floral Beauty With Style

flower1109.jpg

Jeff Leatham star of the new TLC show Flowers Uncut stopped by to talk about the show and share some easy flower tips.

Leatham says:
• Keep arrangements simple, chic and monochromatic
• Change water in vase every two days
• Mix expensive flowers with inexpensive flowers, like roses and carnations

He also played judge and picked the best floral arrangement among our three floral design teams: Steve and John, Linda and Jill, and Suki and Tamsen.

Flowers Uncut centers on Leatham, "a former male model who grew up in the States and has been dubbed "The Rock n' Roll Florist" for his style and pizzazz. Jeff will show the audience why he has earned his reputation as "the best florist in the world" by using an empty space as his canvas, and utilizing flowers as his paint to transform the otherwise ordinary area into an extraordinary experience. Utilizing a bold and innovative vision and approach to flowers as a work of art, Jeff's mantra consists of three things: 'Keep it clean, keep it simple and keep it chic.' And in doing just that, we will watch the end result: a jaw-dropping display of floral majesty that keeps his million dollar clients begging him for more," says TLC.

Hot To Get Clearer Skin

skin111.jpg

Breakouts are your biggest beauty gripe, according to a Self.com survey. And acne is not exclusive to teens. Eleanor Langston from Self Magazine is here with simple strategies to help you uncover the glowing complexion you crave.

Experts say there is a genetic component to acne that can be passed down from both sides of the family. As well, a lack of shut eye doesn't directly lead to acne, but fatigue makes you more susceptible to becoming overwhelmed and tense which does trigger breakouts.

Of course it's crucial to remove makeup, but did you know your cell phone can trigger a breakout?
• Friction overload - Anything rubbing against skin (such as an iPhone glued to your cheek or a bike helmet pressed against your sweaty forehead) can lead to irritation of the hair follicles at the base of each pore, causing inflammation or bumps called papules. Switch to Bluetooth and slip a bandanna under your helmet.
• Subpar cleansing - If you hit the hay without washing your face, the day's grime can make its way into pores. Your body initiates an inflammatory response to fight off bacteria, leading to a small, pink, pus-filled bump called a pustule. Massage in cleanser for at least 30 seconds to remove makeup completely.
• Constant picking - Manhandle or otherwise mess with bumps and blackheads and you risk pushing oil and dirt deeper into skin, creating an even bigger blemish and possibly a scar. Worse, if you rupture the clogged pore, you could wind up with a cyst (a pustule beneath the skin's surface that becomes swollen and inflamed).

'Black Is The New White' In Comedian Paul Mooney's New Memoir

paul1112.jpg

Legendary comic Paul Mooney stopped by to talk about his new memoir Black Is The New White and his performances at Carolines this weekend.

Featuring a foreword by fellow comedian Dave Chappelle, "Black Is the New White is an unapologetically candid memoir from a talent whose influence has ranged far wider than his fame -- mostly by his own design. As head writer for The Richard Pryor Show, he helped tear down racial barriers and change the course of comedy. He helped Robin Williams and Sandra Bernhard break into show business. He paved the way for superstars like Eddie Murphy. And at every turn he's shunned the easy set-up and punch line in favor of comedy that's indisputably real and raw, reflecting the reality of race issues in America even when it's generated outrage," says Amazon. Black Is The New White is available in bookstores now.

You can catch Mooney at Caroline's this weekend from November 12 to November 15. Caroline's On Broadway is located at 1626 Broadway, New York, NY 10019. For ticket and show information, call (212) 757-4100 or visit www.carolines.com.

Fashion How-To: Hats

hats.jpg

Hats are the must have accessory for the fall and winter months. And the secret to looking good in a hat is your hair! Celebrity hairstylist, Philip Pelusi will reveal how to make your hair look great under the most common hat styles of the season. including fedora, beret and shearling hat.

Hat Style: Fedora Hair
Style: Contrast the angles of the hat with loose feminine waves.
Why This Works: Loose feminine waves are a great way to wear your hair under a Fedora. This type of hat has very sharp "menswear" angles. This is off-set by the softer hairstyle.
How To Achieve This Look: This type of hair style works best on medium to longer length hair. If hair has a natural wave, simply apply a curl enhancing products like P2® by Philip Pelusi® ReCurl to boost waves and BeachComber to add texture and let hair dry or dry with a diffuser attachment on your blow dyer. If hair is straight, use a big barrel curling iron to add curls, some facing towards and some facing away from the face.

Thanksgiving Meal Makeover: Eat Healther Without Losing Flavor

thanks1116.jpg

We're checking out traditional Thanksgiving fixings and their healthy -- or "clean" -- versions. Tosca Reno stopped by to talk about classic recipes like sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and a dessert.

• Fatty Stuffing with Sausage Meat vs. Wild Rice and Cranberry-Based Clean Stuffing
Wild rice being an intact whole grain is a nutritional warehouse full of necessary vitamins, minerals and fiber, the cranberries contain antioxidant and offer sweet/tart flavor to the stuffing, no unhealthy and unnecessary fats, mother lode of natural flavors, much lighter dish without the fats from sausage and bacon, it can actually be prepared as a dish on its own if you don't want to stuff your bird or if you don't want turkey and want to serve fish or vegan alternative, just add nuts or seeds to pump up the protein and healthy fat value. I always make extras in a casserole dish for next day leftovers or for stuffing into a wrap the next day.

5 Ways Men Can Shave Years Off, Look Younger

younger1118.jpg

We women will try anything to defy our age! From lotions and potions to gadgets and gizmos and that got us thinking, what about the men in our lives? Here with five simple anti-aginig solutions for guys is Gordy Megroz, senior editor of Men's Journal.

1. Whiten Your Teeth
Something that's stained we usually associate with having been around for a long time and that includes your teeth. The Rembrandt 2-hour tooth whitening formula gets squeezed into a tray that you wear for 20 minutes. Over the next two hours it bleaches your teeth. They won't glow in the dark but they won't look old and dingy either. $20; rembrandt.com

2. Take Care of Your Skin
Flaky, leathery, wrinkly skin makes you look weathered. There are two steps to making sure it remains young and healthy looking: drink plenty of water (the best policy is to just sip off a water bottle all day) and use a good moisturizer a couple times a day. We like the Kiehl's Facial Fuel because it has an SPF 15 in it, which obviously protects against the sun and therefore prevents any more damage that causes that leathery, wrinkled look. But it also has caffeine in it, which actually causes the skin to tighten and look more rejuvenated. And it's not greasy, which is always nice. $21; kiehls.com

Sofia Vergara Talks About Being Part Of A 'Modern Family'

"I do make the accent a little stronger.”

Born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia, Vergara has been easing into the America market from the South American market. She’s well-known for her modeling work, and her first notable American acting gig in the movie Chasing Papi.

Fact Or Fiction: Beauty 'Truisms' Put To The Test

FactOrFic1120.jpg

Before you dig into your medicine cabinet, find out which of these six common beauty beliefs are legit. Alexis Farah from Women's Health Magazine is here seperate fact from fiction?

Cucumbers contain vitamins that reduce under-eye circles. (MYTH)
• Putting cucumbers on your eyes can fade dark circles, but only when they happen to be cold.
• That's because it's the cold-not the cucumber-that reduces puffiness.
• The cold works by constricting blood vessels to reduce fluid buildup in the soft tissues beneath your eyes.
• You can just as easily use a cool washcloth on your eyes for a few minutes and save your cucumbers for a Greek salad.

Shampoo can make a great body wash. (FACT)
• Shampoo has the same dirt-trapping agents as your favorite body wash.
• That means shampoo can make a great stand-in when your body wash bottle goes empty.
• Plus, shampoo contains conditioners that can make your skin softer than a baby's bottom.

Homeless Helping Homeless In HELP USA Thanksgiving Dinner

homeless1125.jpg

In the true spirit of giving, homeless residents at the HELP USA shelter on Wards Island in the Bronx will be cooking and serving Thanksgiving dinner for over 200 fellow homeless residents this holiday.

The dozen chefs-in-training are all currently homeless, living in the HELP SEC shelter, and are enrolled in a nine-week Culinary Arts Training program at HELP USA's Ward's Island site. They take daily classes from an inspiring instructor, Chef Daniel MacGuire.

Chef Daniel is a former corporate executive chef with Marriott Hotels who now teaches the homeless residents culinary and life skills to help them succeed in and out of the kitchen. Several students have been placed in restaurants around NYC, and two recent graduates are working as sous-chefs to Chef Daniel in the HELP kitchen at the very shelter where they used to live.

The Culinary Arts Training program is one of several training programs HELP USA offers to its homeless residents in an effort to help them develop skills that will lead to rapid employment and permanent housing placement. HELP USA is a leading national nonprofit providing shelter, jobs, and services to the homeless, by empowering them to become and remain self-reliant.

Alicia Keys Ecstatic About Jewelry Collection, Her Upcoming "Freedom"

alicia1126.jpg

With 12 Grammys, four number one albums and a slew of roles on the big screen, you would think Alicia Keys had more than enough to put on her resume.

In an effort to expand her brand and career, the 28-year-old singing sensation is now pursing a number of ventures outside of music that she calls "business of inspiration."

Keys, who recently launched her new company AK Worldwide (AKW), announced a partnership in The Barber's Daughters jewelry line - the first of many endeavors, she says.

The inspirational handcrafted jewelry line caught the singer's eyes during a tour stop in Toronto last summer and inspired her to design her own collection for the line.

"They are these unique one of a kind pieces that have the most beautiful words on them, and for me - as a song writer - words mean everything to me," she told PIX News during a retail gallery reception Tuesday at the Collette Blanchard Gallery in Soho.

"People always tell me my music has gotten them through different periods in their lives and I feel this is an extension of that."

Michael Kenneth Williams Hits 'The Road 'In New Movie

Actor Michael Kenneth Williams stopped by the studio to talk about his role as The Thief in the new film The Road.

"A father (Viggo Mortensen) and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind and water. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the warmer south, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing: just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless cannibalistic bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a rusting shopping cart of scavenged food--and each other," says IMDB of the movie.

Fans of Williams will remember him as Omar Little on the hit TV show The Wire. This Brooklyn boy grew up in Flatbush and has also starred in The Philanthropist, Miracle at St. Anna, The Killing Point, Six Degrees and Alias.

The Road is currently playing in theaters. For more information, visit theroad-movie.com.
