Bra Turns Into Two Gas Masks

gas-mask.jpg

A woman's bra which in an emergency can double as a pair of gas masks has won one of the awards handed out at the prestigious Harvard University for the year's most eccentric research.

The Ig Nobels, a tongue-in-cheek homage to their Scandinavian counterparts, were announced just days before the Nobel committee in Stockholm began awarding its prestigious awards on Monday.

The bra that can be turned into two protective face masks -- one for the wearer and the other for whoever else may need one -- won its inventors Elena Bodnar, Raphael Lee and Sandra Marijan of Chicago the Public Health award.

The patent states that each of the bra's cup sections is fitted with a filter device, meaning the wearer can whip it off, and detach each section to fit it over the face.

Adventures of Power, which was written, directed and also stars Gold, is an epic comedy about a mine-worker named Power whose love of drums and lack of musical skill has turned him into the ridiculed "air drummer" of his small town.

But when Power's union-leader father calls a strike at the mine, Power discovers an underground subculture of air-drummers who just might hold the key to changing the world. Power's journey across America brings him face-to-face with his town's greatest enemy, and allows him to discover the beat within his own heart.

'Tanguera: The Tango Musical' Comes To NYC

tanguera1006.jpg

Tanguera: The Tango Musical blurs the line between traditional dance and traditional musical theater, and makes its New York debut at New York’s City Center from October 7 to 18th.

Tanguera premiered in 2002 in its birthplace of Buenos Aires and played a record-breaking run of 18 months. More than just a dance piece, Tanguera tells the story of Giselle, a young immigrant who comes to Buenos Aires and is tricked into the underworld of prostitution.

Giselle must choose between the criminal nightclub owner Gaudencio and the harbor worker Lorenzo, who she met when she first arrived. Giselle ultimately becomes the reason for a deadly knife fight between these two rivals. Tanguera, though, is not just about this love triangle, it tells the tale of the creation of the Argentinean tango and the language is dance itself.

Tanguera’s story is told visually, with high adrenaline choreography complete with precise leg movements, racy turns, lifts, and jumps. Tanguera is an entirely new concept for tango in that traditionally, tango productions have involved an orchestra, one or two singers and six dancing pairs.

In Tanguera, dance is used to propel the story, and the show is cast with performers who not only can dance, but can also act. The dance, though central, is a vehicle for the plot, as it was in such Broadway musicals as "Contact" and "Moving Out."

For tickets and show information, visit www.nycitycenter.org.

Soon the two form unlikely alliances with a Chinese stripper named Esther (Bai Ling) and Susan (Debi Mazar), a local librarian.

"But when Maggie seeks out her mother's (Dana Delany) help, the truth catches up to her and she has to decide to either face her past or keep running. A Beautiful Life reminds us that each life is not just the singular story of one person. Rather, it is the story of all the lives that intersect with and enrich it," says Fandango.

Why Do Women Have Sex?

woman1007.jpg

Why do women have sex? It's an intriguing question once you get beyond the obvious reasons: to perpetuate the species and because it feels good.

Two University of Texas researchers wanted to dig deeper to find out what specifically drives women to go to bed with their partners. They conducted an online survey of more than 1,000 women ages 18 to 87 and found, to their surprise, that women aren't all that different from men. The survey asked women if they have ever had sex for one of the 237 reasons identified by the researchers in a previous study. If their response was yes, they would then be prompted to describe a specific sexual experience.

The researchers Cindy Meston and David Buss incorporated the findings into a new book, Why Women Have Sex. Here are excerpts from my [Deborah Kotz] interview with Meston.

What are the biggest reasons women have sex?

The No. 1 reason is because they're attracted to their partner, followed by their seeking of physical gratification. Lower down on the list, the reasons were connected to love or emotional bonding. This sort of knocks down the stereotype that men have sex for pleasure while women have sex for love. Personally, for me--in my 17 years treating women who have sexual problems--it's reassuring to see that most of the women who participated in our survey are having sex for the pure physical pleasure of it.

She hates you now, but if you're always there for months and months she'll eventually realize what a catch you are. It should be noted that restraining orders somewhat modify this approach.
Example: You’ve Got Mail

New Merck Manual Offers Compendium Of Remedies At Your Fingertips

merck1020.jpg

We trust our doctors to give us accurate health information but simple treatments for today's common conditions were not always common sense in 1899. In the original 1899 version of the book, Dr. Pasternak said, there were strange ways to treat certain medical disorders. Oh, how times and health information have changed over the past 110 years! The new Merck Manual offers updated remedies from 300 doctors at your fingertips.

It's Reptile Awareness Day!

tutrle1021.jpg

Reptiles get a bad rap, but they need love too. And today is the day to show your love. It’s Reptile Awareness Day. Zookeepers from the Essex County Turtleback Zoo brought in a few friends to show our Tamsen Fadal that these creatures are truly amazing.

Located on 20 acres in the beautiful South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ, Essex County Turtle Back Zoo exhibits species from five continents. Naturalistic exhibits located throughout the zoo’s landscaped grounds offer the perfect recreational and educational experience. Turtle Back Zoo is committed to fostering excellence in wildlife education and conservation, so that present and future generations are inspired to understand, appreciate and protect the fragile interdependence of all living things

American Alligator- One of two alligator species in the world. The other is smaller and found in China.
- Record size for alligators is 5.5m (18’). Largest crocodilian (based on a skull) is 7.46m (24.3’) for a saltwater crocodile.
- 23 species found in warmer habitats world wide
- Alligators have broader snouts and the 4th tooth on the lower jaw fits into a groove and is not visible when the mouth is closed. Crocodiles have a more slender snout and the 4th tooth is exposed when the mouth is closed
- Some dig nests, others (like the alligator) build a nest of vegetation - Sex of alligator babies is determined by the incubation temperature between days 7-21. Temperatures below 30C (78F) produce all females; above 34C (93F) produces all male. Temps in between produce both sexes
- Females of many species are excellent mothers and will protect nests and young
- Threatened by habitat destruction and the skin trade
- Long lived. Reports up to 100 years

Fall Outerwear That's Fun To Wear

coats1021.jpg

Its getting cold out there and to warm up, we've got some great looks. Fashion expert Kevin Lennox stopped by with his picks of outerwear that's fun to wear.

Models: Danielle & Chris
While the preppy look never truly goes out of style, this season we're seeing the trend pop up more and more all over the place, and it's a perfect option for both guys and girls, because preppy inherently combines style and function.

Danielle is wearing this chic, quilted Dory jacket in an eye catching yellow. What I love here is the notion of choosing a bright color for fall, not everything has to be an earth tone. Chris is rocking a canvas field coat, and what I adore about this is it has a thin insulated lining so this coat will keep him very warm without being bulky in the slightest.

• Dory Jacket- $39.50
• Canvas Field Coat- $44.50

Now, LIFE puts its spin on the age-old debate with their newest title, LIFE Wonders of the World, a compilation of the Top 50 Wonders in the universe, including Seven Wonders hand-picked by LIFE’s editors. From cover to cover, the book leads armchair travelers on an adventure beyond compare. This unique format of removable prints, which won a 2009 Bookbinders Guild Award, debuted in last year’s popular holiday gift title, LIFE The Classic Collection.

FDNY Partners With Dominos' For Fire Safety Month

battery1026.jpg

Research indicates that 70% of fire-related deaths occur in homes that are not equipped with a working smoke alarm - with most residential fires occurring during the winter months.

As October is fire safety month (and winter is almost here), members of the New York City Fire Department’s Fire Safety Education Unit would like to encourage families to use “turning back the clocks” as a reminder to change the batteries in their smoke alarms.

As part of the annual "Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries" campaign, the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit will distribute 9-volt batteries and fire safety materials at its annual Times Square event on October 30.

This year, the event will be sponsored by Dominos’ American Legend pizza and will be hosted by 25 iconic Marilyn Monroe American Legend look alikes who will distribute smoke detector batteries and samples of American Legends pizza. In addition, throughout the month of November, $1 will be donated to the FDNY for fire safety education for every American Legends pizza ordered from one of the 19 Manhattan Dominos stores.

NYC Marathon Mania For Beginners

sport1028.jpg

This Sunday, nearly 40,000 runners will take to the streets for the ING NYC Marathon and while you may not be a "runner," you could be! Here to help you find motivation with tips for beginner's is Haig Marino of Slope Sports.

Haig is a familiar face behind the scenes of the PIX Morning News -- he's one of our cameramen!
And when he's not taping the show, he's out there being active -- from biking to running to snowboarding. He and his wife opened Slope Sports in Park Slope about six years ago. Here are Haig's picks:

SHOES
• Ascis Gel Kayano, $140
• Ascis Gel Cumulus, $100

CLOTHES
• Craft Pro Zero Zip Neck Baselayer, $59.99
• Mizuno WP Elixer Jacket, $125

TRAINING
• Timex Ironman Watch, $59.95
• Polar RS300x GPS Heart Rate Monitor, $250
Haig says: "If you're really confused there are a number of qualified coaches & classes with NYRR who put on the NYC marathon to help you out."

FUEL FOR YOUR BODY
• Nuun Hydration Tablets, $5.99
Haig says: "Well for starters, you shouldn't "fuel for a marathon" right off the bat. A lot of newer runners sort of use this as an excuse to eat more. They figure they are burning extra calories during their runs and say "Hey, I can eat more." This is not the case if you're looking to lose weight."

He sheds light on what the public didn't see during these important personal events.

Hogan says about his family's reality show Hogan Knows Best, "In public, we were all having the time of our lives, but that public image simply just covered the problems that were growing behind the scenes."
