brainfood0915.jpg

Healthy snacking – for both kids and adults – is crucial to keeping brains extra sharp. And in-between the first bell and lunchtime, kids’ minds can slump without proper fuel. Parenting offers some delicious ideas for keeping kids brains and taste buds happy.
Deborah Skolnik, the magazine's senior editor stopped by to explain what parents should be looking for in a snack and offered some savory suggestions.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
1. DHA-Omega 3: DHA is a powerful type of Omega 3 (a fatty acid), essential for kids' brain development
2. Complex Carbohydrates: Whole grains digest slower than simple, refined carbs (found in candy and chips) and prevent kids from a "sugar crash" while sitting in the classroom
3. Low Saturated Fat: Some fat is essential for keeping bellies satisfied longer, but moms should be on the lookout for items that are low in artery-clogging saturated fats.)
