Think Twice Before Making An Exotic Animal Your Pet

pets0225.jpg

Did you know that Salvador Dali kept an ocelot as a pet for many years? (An ocelot is similar to a baby leopard or tiger cub and is considered an exotic pet in some countries.) And though they are kept as pets without many reported incidents, they still are not bred for domestication.

With wild pets making headlines, animal activists are campaigning for change. PIX's Tamsen Fadal went to the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, Connecticut to learn about why certain animals should not be domesticated and do not make great pets. She spoke to Jim Knox, zoo educator at Beardsley Zoo and host of the children's wildlife series on PBS "Wild Zoofari."

For more information on the Beardsley Zoo, visit www.beardsleyzoo.org. You can also catch his show Jim Knox's Wild Zoofari on PBS. Visit www.wildzoofari.org for show listings.
