Martha Plimpton Lights Up The Stage In 'Pal Joey'

martha0109.jpg

Martha Plimpton stopped by our studio to talk about her role in the Broadway musical, "Pal Joey."

Set in Chicago in the 1930s, the play follows the character of Joey Evans as he strives to make his dreams of owning his own nightclub come to fruition. A scheming song and dance man, Evans abandons his wholesome girlfriend for a rich--and married--older woman in hopes that she'll set him on the path to success. The musical is based on a book by John O' Hara and the situations and characters depicted are drawn from a series of short stories he had penned in The New Yorker. Martha Plimpton plays sexy chorus girl Gladys Bumps.

You could say Plimpton has show business in her blood; she was born to two actors: Keith Carradine and Shelley Plimpton. A native New Yorker, Plimpton began her career in modeling and made her acting debut at the age of eleven in Rollover. She later went on to work with Woody Allen in Another Woman and alongside Robert DeNiro in Stanley & Iris. In 2007 received a Tony Award Nomination and won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her performance in Tom Stoppard's "The Coast of Utopia."

"Pal Joey" is now running at Studio 54 on Broadway. For more information, please visit: www.paljoeyonbroadway.com.

Nothing But The Best From Nuttin' But Stringz

string0114.jpg

Urban rock violin duo Nuttin' But Stringz came by to talk about their success following their appearance on the third season of America's Got Talent. They also performed "Broken Sorrow" and "Thunder" live in our studio, both of which can be found on their Grammy-nominated album, Struggle From the Subway to the Charts. The title stems from their past, in which they played music on the subways for money, to their present-day success.

The New York duo grew up in Jamaica, Queens. Short-handed as N.B.S., the twosome comprises of teenage brothers Damien and Tourie Escobar. They are a breath of fresh air in the music industry today as they channel their streetwise style in a very unconventional way: through their violin-playing. Their music is an intense hybrid of classical music, R&B, hip-hop and jazz.

N.B.S. will be performing with Aretha Franklin at The Kennedy Center for Martin Luther King Day (January 19), as well as three different inaugural events during the week of President-Elect Barack Obama's inauguration week. In addition, they will be performing at the celeb-founded organization event "Declare Yourself" hosted by Jessica Alba and on-stage with music icons like Carrie Underwood on January 18.

Circle Line Port Captain Talks About Rescuing Passengers

duffy11609.jpg

Circle Line Captain Mike Duffy spoke with Sukanya about the part he played in rescuing passengers in yesterday's US Airways crash into the Hudson River.

Duffy was systematic in recruiting all available rescue personnel onto the scene--members of the FDNY, NYPD, and EMS, along with personnel on commuter ferries worked with each other to launch divers into the river. Duffy witnessed passengers clinging on to the wings of the sunken plane, as well as using its inflatable slides as rafts.

Recollected Duffy of his impulse to help, "You don't think of it at the time; the adrenaline's just running, so you do what's necessary without thinking of anything else." Duffy also employed an available 4 o'clock Circle Line boat to assist with rescue efforts.

"Everyone was calm; all boats in the area were coordinated with each other...It went surprisingly well," remarked Duffy.

Blakeman deemed what followed the incident the "perfect rescue": "The airline went down at the right place and at the eright time for this time of the year...All of the private and governmental assets were in place."

According to him, incidents such as this, along with possible terrorist attacks and inclement weather are those which personnel such as the Port Authority, FDNY, the Coast Guard, and the FBI train to deal with on a daily basis. The training occurs in conjunction with New York Waterways and Circle Line. The well-coordinated rescue effort is a result of this thorough preparation.

New Jersey Couple Helps With Rescue Effort

njcouple011609.jpg

James and Susan Galvacky of Belmar, New Jersey were among the first passengers on a ferry boat who witnessed the US Airways crash first-hand. The couple was going to the city for a doctor's appointment. Upon encountering the scene, James had thought that the plane was a boat that had flipped over, and soon realized otherwise.

The two helped in the rescue efforts by getting people out of the water, as well as those who clung on to the plane's wings, and onto the boat. They found that most of the passengers aboard the fallen aircraft were too in shock to be screaming; their demeanor was calm, despite the freezing waters in which they were immersed.

Susan did her part in placating a crying and bleeding woman by holding her until she got medical attention. "It was like a dream," Susan said of the surrealistic scene that was before her. She was prompted to cry, but reminded herself that her aid was needed. She and her husband were just two of the many good samaritans who became heroes yesterday.

Dr. Steven McCarthy Talks About Treating The Injured At St. Vincent's Hospital

mccarthy11609.jpg

Dr. Steven McCarthy was on duty at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan when US Airways Flight 1549 crashed into the Hudson River yesterday. As the hospital's Director of Emergency Medical Services, McCarthy was simply working on charts in his office when he suddenly became inundated with calls regarding the crash.

"We didn't know what to expect," said McCarthy, rehashing that he and his staff only knew that there were about 150 to 200 people aboard the plane that plummeted into the Hudson River. They expected the arrival of a slew of victims, suffering both from hypothermia and trauma. The hospital quickly went into crisis mode and all help involved breathed "a sigh of relief" when merely seven passengers with mild hypothermia came through the hospital doors to be treated. McCarthy observed nothing too serious--merely mild "bumps and bruises."

However, McCarthy does warn against the mental strain the incident will have on many of the victims: "People will need counseling down the line..We can't ignore the mental health aspects of it." The mental health staff at St. Vincent's Hospital has and will continue to treat those who have been traumatized by the accident.

Commercial Pilot Talks About The Danger Of Birds To Airplanes

alexander011609.jpg

There has been much speculation surrounding the cause of the plane crash in the Hudson River yesterday, the most prominent one being that a flock of geese caused the aircraft's engines to fail.

Aviation expert, attorney, and commercial pilot Brian Alexander reveals that birds pose a problem to airplanes more often than what one might assume. According to him, between seven to ten thousand bird strikes occur each year, leading to plane damages. Alexander points out that New York sites such as LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports have issues with "bird ingestion" due to their location near landfills and water.

Alexander lauded Flight 1549 pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger for the calm and collected way in which he handled the situation. According to Alexander, it was the pilot's cool-headedness and safety-consciousness that made him "tailor-made" to handle the dilemma before him. He emphasized that we could not have prepared for what happened, and that it was "a once-in-a-lifetime thing."

Alexander hopes that we will learn from this unfortunate incident by focusing on improving our technology, although he allows that "we can't make engines fail-safe."

Chris Lawford Gives Us A 'Moment Of Clarity'

book0119.jpg

Author, actor and activist Chris Kennedy Lawford spoke with Emily Frances about his new book, Moments of Clarity.

You might say Chris Lawford was thrust into the spotlight upon birth: he was born to actor Peter and Pat Kennedy Lawford, is a nephew of John F. Kennedy, and a cousin-in-law of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Lawford has been very open with the drug problem he has faced in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which led to his admittance to a clinic. After straightening out his life, he set up a clinic to treat opiate dependency.

A Moment of Clarity offers us a smattering of oral histories from those of all backgrounds. The book details the revelations had by the likes of Richard Dreyfuss, Jamie Lee Curtis, memoirist Susan Cheever, and drummer Dallas Taylor, among many others, in the midst of the drug-addled, dark periods of their lives.

Lawford writes that the traditional sense of the "12-step program" should be regarded more as a spiritual process rather than a therapeutic one. By ridding yourself of your egotism and connecting with God, he writes, you can finally be able to make sense of the world.

A Moment of Clarity hits bookstores today.

The History Of Inaugurations and Obama's First Days In Office

ragone0120.jpg

Inaugural speeches: Some have slipped our minds completely, yet others will remain with us through our nation's history, from the speeches of FDR, JFK to Ronald Reagan. So what can we expect today? Political Analyst Nick Ragone drew upon our inaugural history to predict how Barack Obama's speech will resonate with Americans today.

According to Ragone, Obama is considered by Americans as a great speaker, so a great speech is expected from him. Said Ragone, "The key is to capture the moment." He remarked that our future president has a very distinct voice -- "We all know Obama's speeches."

Ragone looked back on past memorable speeches, such as FDR's. His famous line, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself" caused the American public to rally around him and make his first days in office extremely auspicious. Similarly, John F. Kennedy's line, "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country" was effective as a bold warning against the Soviets that we would win the war. Also memorable is Reagan's speech, which helped turn around the economy by bolstering Americans' spirits.

In addition, Ragone looked ahead on the first 100 days of the Obama presidency, predicting a "Six-month honeymoon period" with plenty of bipartisan support for our future president.

As far as international affairs go, such as American dealings in Israel, Gaza, and the Mumbai bombings, Ragone asserts that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be given a fast start to hone our relations with other countries--"a big challenge."

Ragone also spoke of the legacy that George W. Bush will leave behind, allowing that it will be mixed. According to the political analyst, Bush has tried to make amends with disgruntled Americans with his farewell address and recent press conference, but the question of whether or not our troops should have been in Iraq will linger.

Ragone predicts that a memoir by Bush will probably be produced in which he tries to further clear his reputation. In the mean time, he thinks it best that Bush stay out of politics and keep a low profile. He says this is something our former Vice President Dick Cheney should likewise do, as he has been one of the most unpopular Vice Presidents of the United States to date.

Nick Ragone's book, President's Most Wanted is available in stores now.

William H. Macy Tells Us What 'The Deal' Is

macy0120.jpg

William H. Macy stopped by our studio to talk about his movie, The Deal.

Released in theaters earlier last year, the film focuses on Macy's Charlie Berns, a film producer who agrees to make his aspiring screenwriter nephew's film about 19th century English statesman Benjamin Disraeli. However, he can only get financing if he casts a well-known action star. When the lead actor is kidnapped from the film set, Berns is left to hatch a plan that would keep the project going. Macy co-wrote the film's screenplay with Steven Schachter.

Macy is an Oscar-nominated actor who has won both Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has most recently lent his voice to the animated film, The Tale of Despereaux and has also appeared in notable films such as 2003's Seabiscuit ad 2005's Thank You for Smoking.

The Deal is now available on DVD.

Balancing Act Anticipated For Michelle Obama

bonnie0120.jpg

Author Bonnie Fuller spoke with us on how Michelle Obama should handle her role as the First Lady in the White House.

Fuller said that above all, Obama should surround herself with people who support her interests and priorities. Obama would need to "delegate like crazy" and use her staff to its fullest potential.

Ontop of being a political role model, she will also be our country's model as a wife and a mother. Fuller predicts that this "Mom-In-Chief" will guard her daughters Malia and Natasha ("Sasha") "like a lioness with her cubs."

All responsibilities aside, Fuller stresses that Obama will need some time for herself. She said that Michelle and Barack are a testament to a true, intellectual and romantic partnership, and that this new chapter in their lives will be great for their relationship.

Raising The Obama Girls In The White House

whitehouse.jpg

Dr. Camille Archer, head of the Child and Adolescent Unit at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan stopped by to talk about the challenges the Obama daughters will face during their time in the White House.

The obvious challenge for the girls, said Archer, would be their adjustment from their private lives in Chicago to one in the public limelight. Malia and Sasha, 10 and 7 years old, respectively, will face challenges specific to their ages. Archer noted that it would be a good idea for the Obama parents to take a page out of the Clintons' book and how they handled keeping their daughter Chelsea out of the limelight. It would be ideal to do likewise at the girls' tender ages, as they are still at a stage in which they are struggling to find their identities. Exposure to media scrutiny would only threaten their peace of mind, and furthermore confuse them.

This approach contrasts sharply with how the Bush girls were thrust into the spotlight, and their underage drinking escapades were put on display for the world to see. Archer said it would be hard to conclude whether the girls were rebelling or simply being "normal teens," but allots that "kids are unpredictable."

Furthermore, Archer states that kids with influential parents general undergo a lot of presure. How the girls cope in the public eye would depend largely on their personalities, as well as the extent to which their parents respect their choices. Above all, she advises the girls to be themselves, and "live for what you believe in" rather than conform to the beliefs of those in the world around them.

The Whitest Kids U' Know Are Back And More Irreverent Than Ever

whitekids0126.jpg

New York City comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U' Know will be heralding its third season of their sketch comedy show on IFC, which premieres tomorrow at 10pm.

Trevor Moore, Sam Brown, Zach Cregger, Timmy Williams and Darren Trumeter will serve up a new batch of uncensored and uncut hilarity in 10 all-new scripted episodes. The Whitest Kids U' Know's sardonic humor takes jabs at politics, gender, race and sex. The new season promises to up the ante on the show's risque factor as the troupe takes on our culture's obsessive fascination with celebrities, infomercials, office culture, potty humor, and let's not forget cross dressing and sex with animals!

The comedy group was accepted into the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in 2006 and won for "Best Sketch Group" by the Jury. The group was initially formed by Moore in early 2000 at NYC's School of Visual Arts and has been called "bizarre, edgy, and hilarious," and "funnier than Saturday Night Live" by the likes of Entertainment Weekly.

An Inside Look At New York's Literacy Partners

literacy0127.jpg

Many New Yorkers are struggling to get by and for some - their quest to make ends meet is hindered by their inability to read. Volunteers introduce people of all ages, backgrounds, origins of birth and levels to the world of reading. More than 25,000 New Yorkers have become literate in the organization's 25 years of service. We get an inside look at this New York institution and explain how you can get involved.

Fast Facts:
• About 14 percent of U.S. adults won't be reading this article. Well, okay, most people won't read it, given all the words that are published these days to help us understand and navigate the increasingly complex world.
• But about 1 in 7 can't read it. They're illiterate.
• Statistics released by the U.S. Education Department this week show that some 32 million U.S. adults lack basic prose literacy skill. That means they can't read a newspaper or the instruction on a bottle of pills.
