I am a single mother desperately in need of help. My son is 4 months old. The father has a record, is an IV drug user, was physically abusive. The biggest problem is that although he is an american citizen, he is Colombian/grew up there and left before the mandatory draft. He is an architect, looks good on paper. In order to get a US. passport for a child, you need 2 consenting signatures from parents. To get a Colombian passport(or dual citizenship in his case)you only need one parent.
During pregnancy he acted like he didn't want a thing to do with his son. As soon as the child was born I have received threatening phone calls from him and his mother that they are going to take my son. They are so sure of themselves I thought,"They are nuts! They act like I'm nothing. As if I have no rights!" Turns out, I don't.
Colombia is one of several countries that doesn't adhere to the Hague convention which prevents child abduction. If he gets my child into Colombia I will never see him again. The USA gives the father the rights/visitation and info they need. This is not a lawyer/money issue. He can take my child legally. His visitation begins this weekend. March 5th is the next court date to discuss overnights.I need help and press. The courts don't listen. The more I mention my valid fears, the more opt they are to give him custody which he is seeking.
Google Colombian Child abduction for more info, and an international lawyer, J Morley/spoke with him/ he is crusading with Congress to take these threats seriously...I NEED YOUR HELP. I need press for the courts to take me seriously before he's added to the birth certificate. US courts and most people, lawyers, are unfamiliar with this method of child abduction. Please help.
