'Behind The Lens': Local Photojournalists Reflect On 9/11 In New Documentary

Though it has been seven years since the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, memories of the tragedy are still fresh in our minds. Even more everlasting are the photographs from that fateful day, illustrating faces stricken with terror and fear.
But what of the photographers who arrived on scene to capture the unfolding disaster as others were running away from it?
Behind the Lens: Covering 9/11 is a new documentary that tells the story of four photojournalists who, along with firemen, police officers and fellow journalists, risked their lives to show the world images of a crisis. The film premieres tonight, September 10 at 6pm at the New Filmmakers Film Festival.
Featured in the documentary are photographers Don Halasy and Bolivar Arellano of The New York Post, and David Handschuh and Todd Maisel of The New York Daily News. Both publications are major daily newspapers in New York City.
"Bringing never before seen video from Ground Zero and coupled with in-depth interviews from photojournalists, the audience is given a behind the scenes view into the unique world of gathering news in a crisis. We learn the intimate details of what these photojournalists endured to cover this atrocity; from being buried alive to lensing photos that continue to create controversy and now sit in the Library of Congress"states Covering911.com.
"From a cleanup worker who believes he’s found a survivor to a fireman’s widow burying her husband to an FBI technician separating bones from rubble," according to the film's description, this documentary goes beyond what happened on September 11. It also emphasizes the emotional toll victims, families and these photographers had to endure. And those kinds of wounds don't heal quickly

The September 11 attacks had a devastating financial impact on New York City. Comptroller William Thompson reflects on how the city has rebounded since that day and what still needs to be done.
Seven years later, Comptroller Thompson believes that the city has bounced back to some extent. "I think that more than just recovered, we've changed. We've evoloved. If you look at Manhattan, it was a business district and really the third largest business district in the country," said Comptroller Thompson.
"But if you look, there has been a lot of residential growth in lower Manhattan over the years," said Comptroller Thompson, "It's more of a 24 hour community now as opposed to what was seven or eight years ago."
However, the city still has ways to go. According to Comptroller Thompson, completion of the World Trade Center memorial and Freedom Towers, and development of the entire ground zero area are necessary goals and benchmarks for the city, and specifically the Financial District, to truly continue to be a 24 hour community.
He prescribes more transparency on Wall Street in order to restore confidence "get the credit markets churning."

Thomas Von Essen was the fire commissioner during the terror attacks. On September 11, the Fire Department of New York lost 343 firefighters.
Post-9/11, Von Essen and the FDNY came under criticism as some said that more firefighters could have been saved if their radios were up-to-date and working. However, Von Essen stated that the radios were a problem, but not the main problem.
"You're never going to find a perfect radio for a diaster of that magnitude,"said Von Essen. "You have to work smarter. You have to work safer, slower. You have to have people in different spots and control each group as they go up."
He stated that one way to improve the fire department is to have good leadership. "It's not about thr rank-in-file. It's about the leadership. It's always been about the leadership," stated Von Essen, "The firefighters, they're made to complain, but they're going to do it. They'll do any amount of training and any preparation that you ask them for. It's up to you to make the bosses acountable."
Von Essen also believes that the FDNY is still reeling from the loss of several veteran firefighters. Their wisdom and years of experience is something that needs to be addressed while training new firefighters.

Ray Kelly was police commissioner of the New York Police Department during the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. He resumed this possition in 2002, a few months after the September 11 disaster.
His administration has since stepped up security in New York City to thwart any more attacks. "There's no question about it. We're safer and better prepared," said Police Commissioner Kelly.
"We live in a changed world. [...] You see the deployment in the city of our uniformed officers. We use 1,000 officers a day to protect the city in our counter terrorism efforts. We have a language capability that is unsurpassed by any other law enforcement agency around the world. We speak the sensative languages now, more so than ever before," stated Police Commissioner Kelly.
Officers are now seen in stronger numbers on the subways and on the streets. New Yorkers are encouraged to be vigilant and to call the police if they notice anything peculiar or potentially dangerous. From this the "see something, say something" tagline was born.
"We have done probably more than any other city in the world to protect ourselves," stated Police Commissioner Kelly, "But, again, there's no guarantees."

Michael Bloomberg became mayor four months after Rudolph Guiliani, who was mayor during 9/11. With the cooperation of the NYPD, Mayor Bloomberg has been able to take steps to make New York City safer for its residents.
"What we have to do is make sure that we rebuild and that we dont forget the lessons that left us vulnerable and that gave people reasosn to attack us," stated Mayor Bloomberg, "New York City continues to increase the amount of money it spends on preventing terrorism and being able to respond if, God forbid, something happen."
Mayor Bloomberg warns though we need to be protective of our nation, we should not discourage others from immigrating to the United States. "We got to make sure that this country doesn't close its borders. We need to open our borders. It was that xenophobia that really caused this," stated the mayor.
"We need more foreign languages speakers here so we can understand intelligence. We need more foreign people coming here and joining our culture so that we can be less threatening to others and more accepting," Mayor Bloomberg continued.
Of the construction of the Freedom Tower, Mayor Bloomberg said that the process has been "frustratingly slow." "The problem is not incompetence or selfishness or anything. It's just bureaucratic red tape." The mayor cites the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation as an unnecessary layer of bureaucratic red tape.

On September 11, New Jersey lost 700 of its residents. Governor Jon Corzine, however, doesn't like to make New Jersey victims distinct from the rest of the victims.
"We're very interconnected as a community with New York," said Governor Corzine, "So, yes, there were 700 New Jerseyians, but we look at it as one community lost a tremendous number of people that we loved and worked with and colleagues. [...] All of us still remember one person at a time and we rememeber what it took out of our communities."
Corzine noted that it was only eight years before the 9/11 attacks, in 1993 that the World Trade Center was first attacked my terrorists. Ports and cargo containers need to more secure.
"We need to stay vigilant [...] even if there is not a specific threat at a given moment of time because it is when we back away that we create openings for those that would harm the public," said Governor Corzine.

Actress and singer Mary Costa is the original voice of Princess Aurora in Walt Disney's animated film Sleeping Beauty. She's here to talk about the two-disc 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition DVD and Blu-Ray release of the newly remastered film, which hits stores next Tuesday, October 7.
Sleeping Beauty turned French author Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale into a classic story. The Disney film follows the story of Princess Aurora, who is cursed by the witch Maleficent, who is resentful for not being invited to the princess' christening. With the help of her Three Good Fairies, Princess Aurora's curse is weakened: rather than dying, she will fall into a deep sleep if she touches a spinning wheel and will only be awoken by true love's kiss.
During a trip into the woods, she falls in love with a young man who is riding his horse. However, she realizes that she must return to the palace and never learns his name. On her way back, Maleficent tricks the princess into touching a spinning wheel and she falls asleep. Maleficent knows that Prince Phillip, the young man in the forest, is Princess Aurora's true love, and captures him. However, the Three Good Fairies free him and he, in turn, is able to wake the princess with his kiss.
