USS Nautilus: 50 Years of Nuclear Powered Subs

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the year the world's first nuclear powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, sailed under the North Pole and into Soviet waters on a secret spy mission. After getting beaten into space at the height of the Cold War, this was an enormous scientific moment for the United States. A ticker tape parade, a LIFE Magazine cover immediately followed.
To mark the occasion, a new book The Ice Diaries: The Untold Story of the USS Nautilus Cold War's Most Daring Mission is in stores and is written by the sub's commander, Captain William R. Anderson, and Don Keith, a best-selling author.
WATCH THE VIDEO AND READ MORE AFTER THE JUMP...
For the first time, Capt. Anderson shares newly declassified stories of his sub's encounters with terrible storms, fire in the hold, collisions with icebergs, and broken compasses on his dangerous mission. He was able to put his tale on paper before passing away last February.
