I am a NYC artist and art teacher. I also have submitted cartoons to the New Yorker in the past. They have a long history of humor, not usually overtly political.
This Obama cover fails to satirize what it meant to satirize, the myth of Obama's being a practicing Muslim. Instead it gives the iimpression that Obama and his wife are Muslim terrorists.
I do think that once an image is out there, you can't take it back!
New Yorker should use idea people who understand how to present wonderful satire, as they have in the past! They have insulted two fine people, even if it wasn't their intention.
