Fast Food Calorie Counts:
Whether or not the New York ruling on chain restaurants posting calorie counts goes into effect in the coming weeks, many New Yorkers will still be surprised to find how much damage their favorite foods are really doing to their waistlines.
It's important to learn how to break down the calorie counts and find out the best menu choices that will keep you fuller for longer, without going overboard on calories.
Occasionally, an item that has slightly more calories may be the more nutritious choice.
NutritionData.com gives smart picks for eating out. For more information, log onto www.nutritiondata.com
Here are some of the best options New Yorkers can pick at these restaurants:
1. Jamba Juice: Sunrise Strawberry - 240 calories
Why it's a good choice:
- Fiber and vitamin C from the strawberries
- Isoflavones from the soymilk
- Probiotics from the yogurt
What to avoid: Some of the lower calorie options at Jamba Juice are filled with more artificial ingredients that have no nutritional benefits
2. Starbucks: Spinach, Roasted Tomato, Feta & Egg Wrap - 240 Calories
Why it's a good choice:
- The egg will provide you with protein to keep you satiated for longer
- The spinach and roasted tomato provide you with your vegetable intake
- The feta will add some healthy fats to your meal
What to avoid: Most of the food items and drinks here are extremely oversized and unhealthy - stick with small portions for a special treat and a tall for any drink other than plain coffee
3. Chipotle: Burrito bowl with rice, black beans, fajita vegetables, red or green salsa, tomato, and lettuce - 430 calories
Why it's a good choice: The tortillas are the breaking point at Chipotle, skip it and opt for the bowl - even if you add a meat or one additional topping (like guacamole which is high in healthy monounsaturated fats) you'll still be better off
What to avoid: Skip the extras like corn salsa, which is high in carbohydrates, or the sour cream and cheese
4. McDonalds: Premium Grilled Chicken Classic Sandwich - 420 calories
Why it's a good choice:
- This sandwich has more calories than other chicken sandwiches on the menu, but it's lower in total and saturated fat
- The protein in the chicken will keep you more satisfied
What to avoid: When you're hungry - skip the salads - they are doused in unhealthy dressings and don't fill you up
5. T.G.I. Friday's: Sizzling Chicken and Broccoli - 500 calories
Why it's a good choice:
- Broccoli is a great source of fiber
- The chicken gives you protein to keep you full
What to avoid: The more complicated dishes at this restaurant are loaded with calories and fat - stay away from anything with a lot of toppings or a lot of ingredients
6. Olive Garden: Venetian Apricot Chicken - 448 calories
Why it's a good choice:
- This dish has slightly more calories than other dishes - but less fat and carbohydrates
- The chicken is served on a bed of nutrient-rich vegetables.

On today's show we made Frank's Veal Cutlets Milanese. The recipe:
FRANK'S VEAL CUTLETS MILANESE
SERVES 8
½ small Italian stale baguette (about ½ pound)
2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
Pinch of oregano
¼ cup minced flat-leaf parsley
1 cup plus 3 tablespoons olive oil
¼ teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
½ cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs, beaten
8 veal cutlets (about 1 ¼ pounds), pounded this to slightly less than ¼ inch
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 lemon cut into 8 wedges
Break or cut the bread into large chunks and place in a food processor. Process until the bread is reduced to fine crumbs. Transfer the crumbs to a large bowl and stir in the cheese, oregano, and parsley. Gradually add 3 tablespoons of oil, stirring, until thoroughly combined. Season with the salt and pepper.
Spread the flour on a large plate, place the eggs in a shallow bowl, and spread the seasoned bread crumbs on a second large plate. Coat each veal cutlet in the flour, then the beaten eggs, and then the bread crumbs, patting with the palm of your hand to ensure adhesion.
Heat 1 cup of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high flame (to a frying temperature of 350 F) and sauté the veal for 2 minutes. Turn and sauté for 1 additional minute. Do not crowd pan. If necessary, fry the cutlets in batches. Remove with a slotted spatula and drain on paper towels. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and serve with lemon wedges.

Recipe:
Logan County Hamburgers
By Katie Lee Joel
These thin hamburgers are straight out of the Depression era. My grandmother grew up during the Depression in Logan County in the hills of West Virginia. Since money was scarce, families had to make their meat go a long way. Even though times have changed, she still likes to make food that's easy on the wallet. I just love the combination of the flavors of the burger, raw onion, cheese and especially the grilled toast.
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 medium yellow onion, half grated, the other half thinly sliced
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
12 slices white bread
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
12 slices American cheese, optional
Directions:
In a medium bowl, combine the beef, egg, grated onion, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix until combined. Form into thin patties.
Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
heat a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers about 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. Drain the grease from the skillet.
In the same skillet, place six slices of bread, butter side down. Top each with a slice of cheese, if desired, some onions, and a burger. Top with remaining slice of cheese, if using, and bread and butter side up. Cook each sandwich until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.
Serve with mustard, ketchup, pickles, or any other desired hamburger toppings.

Super Juices:
Can juice really make you healthier?
You may have dismissed it as just another food fad, but experts are putting a whole new spin on the beverage and Shape has all the info.
The key is to make juice a supplement to rather than a substitute for all of the fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Though these beverages are generally higher in sugar and calories and lower in fiber than their whole counterparts, research shows that a combination of the two may be the most beneficial to your overall health.
Mix it Up:
Individual fruits and vegetables can offer some measure of protection against illness and chronic disease. But to get the greatest preventative benefits, you should diversify the type and color of produce you’re taking in.
Learn the Lingo:
Some store-bought juice “drinks,” also called “cocktails” or “punches,” contain as little as five percent juice. What you will find: water, lots of sugar, and artificial flavoring.
Stick to a two-drink maximum:
While the disease-fighting potential of juice may be considerable, it shouldn’t be an invitation to keep refilling your glass. There’s no peeling or slicing involved, and unlike whole foods, the energy in beverages won’t do much to fill you up—which could spell weight gain if you’re not careful. One study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that when people were given either the solid or liquid version of certain foods (watermelon versus watermelon juice, cheese versus milk, and coconut meat versus coconut milk), those who drank the liquids consumed up to 20 percent more calories throughout the rest of the day.
The new super juices:
Don’t have time to prepare your own blend at home?
