7:00am Segment Info:
Nasal surgery may be a key treatment for people with obstructive sleep apnea. Which makes sense.
According to researchers in Taiwan, removing nasal obstructions like polyps significantly reduces the symptoms of nasal obstruction, snoring and daytime sleepiness. There was also an improvement in overall health and quality of life.
Do all people who snore suffer from sleep apnea?
MORE AFTER THE JUMP...
No, in fact, most people who snore do not. Sleep apnea can cause snoring, but snoring can be caused by many different things, everything from a cold, nasal blockage, obesity and having a large neck. Also a little alcohol before bedtime can increase the chances that you'll snore. If you snore all the time it's probably a good idea to get checked out by an ear nose and throat doctor or ENT. There are a number of simple minimally invasive procedures that can literally cure snoring.
In other news, there may be a new way to influence the gender of your baby.
What did you have for breakfast? Did you eat a big one? If you did researchers from England say you're more likely to have a son rather than a daughter.
A new survey of more than 700 women shows nearly 6 out of 10 women who get pregnant after eating a high energy breakfast give birth to boys. Researchers say obsessive dieting may be contributing to the growing gender gap.. Since there has been a slight but steady drop in male births over the last 40 years.
Are there "key" nutrients involved in this process?
Glucose or sugar was important, but also researchers say consuming key ingredients like potassium Vitamins C,E and B12 and calcium can increase the odds of having a boy.
8:00am Ask The Doctor Segment Info:
1. Erika from Passaic, NJ asks: Every morning, when I wake up, my eyes feel like they're glued together. They're hard to open. Why is this and what can I do to prevent it?
If you're waking up with crusty eyes you're probably suffering from some kind of increased discharge from the eyes whether it's from an infection, a cold, irritation, dry eyes or an allergy has to be determined by a doctor. To open up your eyes in the morning, use warm compresses. But that's only temporary. You need to get to the bottom of the problem. Once your doctor makes the diagnosis and treats the underlying cause your symptoms will go away.
2. Carol from Hampton Bays, NY asks: Does rinsing fruit and vegetables with water remove pesticides etc. from the food? What is the best way to protect against harmful agents on produce?
Unfortunately, pesticides are common in produce. Some are on the surface and are easier to remove.... Others are in the root and get inside the plant making it impossible to get rid of them. Surface pesticides are often sealed in with a waxy substance so they don't come off in the rain to remove them you can try rubbing your damp produce with baking soda or soaking it in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water for 5 to 10 minutes. There are also produce washes available. If you can afford it, organic is another option, but there's no guarantee even organic produce is completely safe.
3. Andrew from Westbury, Long Island asks: I'd like to know how to get rid of my sunburn caused by my allergies?
No matter what caused your sunburn it needs to be treated the same... With cool compresses and some aloe vera lotion or cream. If the pain is severe you can also get some relief with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Of course the best way to avoid a sunburn is with prevention. If you're susceptible make sure you cover up and use plenty of sun block.
