eBAY Pop Culture

ebay0414.jpg

Britney and Barack were tops on eBay in 2007, but which pop sensations have made it to America’s most wanted list so far in ’08?

Based on data from eBay, the world’s largest online marketplace, several pop culture phenomena have taken the country—and our wallets—by storm in just the three short months since the year began.

So who are the big winners? eBay Pop Culture Expert Karen Bard can share this news in a fun (think props) and informative (think eBay data) segment for your viewers.

VIDEO & ITEMS AFTER THE JUMP....

Top Five of ’08 to date:

1. Barack Obama “Progress” Poster
700 limited edition “Progress” posters designed by artist Shephard Fairey went on sale in late January in support of presidential candidate Barack Obama and the country went wild, with posters selling out in fifteen minutes flat and quickly making their way onto eBay:
355 posters have been sold on eBay for an average price of $389.20 since their release

2. Juno Hamburger Phone
Screenwriter Diablo Cody’s use of a hamburger-shaped phone in her film about a quirky pregnant teenager sparked a pop culture phenomenon (and an Oscar win):
In January 2008, sales of the “Juno hamburger phone” increased by 759% on eBay
Over 1,000 hamburger phones were sold in January of ’08 alone

3. Madonna
Britney may have been the top selling pop starlet on eBay in 2007, but Madonna rules in ’08:
19,199 items relating to the Material Girl have sold on eBay since the beginning of the year
In fact, more Madonna-related items have sold than those of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton combined!
“Madonna’s popularity on eBay bodes well for her upcoming release, Hard Candy, and once again proves that the mother of all pop stars can never be counted out,” says Bard.

4. Polaroid Instant Cameras
Polaroid’s announcement of the demise of its instant camera film sparked a cultural panic and a mad dash to snatch up all things Polaroid on eBay:
In the two weeks following the announcement, sales of Polaroid instant cameras and film skyrocketed by 140%

5. Brett Favre Memorabilia
Brett Favre's sudden retirement had sports fans in a feeding frenzy on eBay:
29,199 Brett Favre-related items sold for an average of $27.66 in the two weeks following the announcement
$80—400% above retail—was the price one eBay user paid for four copies of the Green Bay Press-Gazette extra edition highlighting Favre’s retirement
