The New York City regulation requiring restaurants to post the calories of foods on their menus is now in effect.
All chains with 15 restaurants or more across the country have six weeks to comply. Offenders will be subject to fines of up to $2000. Food is considered to be high in calories when one serving has more than 400 calories.
400 calories a serving doesn't sound like a lot.
VIDEO & MORE AFTER THE JUMP...
It's not. To give you an idea of how big this problem is... According to the New York Post a Bloomin Onion from Outback has more than 2200 calories. You're only supposed to get two thousand calories for the entire day. But what's more confusing some "salads" which many people think are healthy are loaded with calories. For example, Taco Bell's Border Grande Taco Salad with taco beef has 1450 calories.
There's a warning for women not to overeat during pregnancy.
Many women think that while they're pregnant it's ok to eat whatever they want because after all they're eating for two.
Right? Well doctors say that's not such a good idea. In fact, a growing baby needs only about 300 calories a day. Becoming overweight can lead to pregnancy complications for both the mother and child. And that extra weight can also increase the risk of problems with subsequent pregnancies.
So what's the best way to handle the cravings because it can be difficult.
Doctors say you should eat healthy. If you get a craving you can satisfy it but be careful about portion control. Also, eat slowly. This way you can tell when you're full. The average-weight woman should gain about 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. You don't want to gain less than 15 or more than 40. Of course one way to help avoid becoming overweight is to exercise. It's good for the mother and the baby. Be sure to speak to your doctor before starting any exercise program.
8:00am Ask The Doctor Segment Info:
1. Tony from Bronx, NY asks: Is it OK for my wife to think about sex all the time? My wife thinks about, and wants, sex more then me! Why do they say men think about, and want, sex more then women? I think my wife is crazy.
Tony, this is a difficult question to answer in 30 seconds. You don't give me a lot of details. Sexual desire is both physical and psychological, and it can vary depending on a person's age, hormone levels, stress, fatigue, you name it. To get to the bottom of this you should first consult your doctor and then perhaps a psychologist or sex therapist. It could be that your wife is completely normal and you need some help.
2. Karen from Union City, NJ asks: I'm a new mom. And I'm wondering if it's okay to heat up my son's bottles in the microwave?
Karen, the reason why it's not recommended to heat bottles in the microwave is not because it damages the formula but because microwaves often heat things unevenly. So while the bottle may feel cool. The formula may actually be hot in spots. That's why it's best to place the bottle in warm water, but if you have no other option. You can use the microwave for only a few seconds. Before giving any heated bottle to your baby. It's a good idea to shake the bottle and test the formula to make sure it's not too hot.
3. Robert from Queens, NY asks: I just want to know why do I keep on getting so many colds this year? Is there something going around?
Robert, this has been one of the worst flu seasons in the past four years. As for colds, the season is about the same. It may be that you're a little run down or not getting enough rest or eating right. The best way you can prevent a cold is to eat right, get plenty of rest and regular exercise and wash your hands frequently especially during cold season. Studies show hand washing is the single best thing you can do to prevent a cold.
