CW11 Morning News Producer Ojinika Obiekwe was recently awarded a fellowship by the National Association of Black Journalists to report on the issues facing the West African country of Senegal. And of course, a huge thank you goes out to Khadijah White for her amazing camera work during the trip. Thanks, Khadijah, you are one savvy camerawoman!

THAT MUST HAVE BEEN A REAL EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE FOR YOU. I LIVED IN DAKAR, SENEGAL FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS WITH MY HUSBAND AND 2 YEAR OLD SON AT THAT TIME. IT WAS QUITE A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR ME. MY HUSBAND WORKED FOR THE AMERICAN EMBASSY AT THAT TIME AND I WAS THE MANAGER OF THE COMMISSARY. WE LIVED IN A "WEALTHY" NEIGHBORHOOD RIGHT ON THE ALTANTIC OCEAN OUTSIDE DAKAR. WE HAD A GREAT HOUSE, A MAID, A NANNY, GARDNER AND GUARD. MANY OF OUR FAMILY VISITED US AS OFTEN AS THEY COULD. THEY LOVED IT...THE ONLY THING THEY DIDN'T LOVE WAS GETTING SICK, WHICH WAS THE USUAL MONTHLY ISSUE...EATING SOMETHING THAT WASN'T WASHED GOOD, ETC....WE USED TO VACATION AT ALDIANA GERMAN RESORT OUTSIDE OF DAKAR. IT WAS SO CHEAP TO US AND WOULD BE RATED A 5 STAR RESORT.

WE HAVE OUR HOUSE DECORATED IN ALL ARTIFACTS FROM DAKAR, GOREE, THEIS, AND COUNTRIES SURROUNDING SENEGAL. MY HUSBAND USED TO TRAVEL TO ALL THE EMBASSIES UP AND DOWN THE WEST COAST. WE WERE ABLE TO GO TO THE GAMBIA WITH HIM WHICH WAS GREAT SINCE THEY SPOKE ENGLISH. DAKAR WAS CERTAINLY AN EXPERIENCE I WILL NEVER FORGET AND ONE DAY WE WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK AND VISIT. I DO HOPE THE POVERTY AND ILLNESSES HAVE DECLINED SOME SINCE 2000, WE THINK ABOUT ALL THE LOCAL POEPLE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR LIVES AND HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH THEM. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE.
